In this video we take you for a tour of one of Full Fibre Fibre Heroes cabinets that bring ultrafast Full Fibre (FTTP) broadband to 1000's of homes.
Ollie Bell, Senior Network Engineer at Full Fibre Fibre Heroes tells us all about the different components inside the cabinet and how they design and engineer the cabinets that is capable of delivering 10Gbps broadband using XGS-PON network.
Thank you to Full Fibre Fibre Heroes for arranging this and letting me film this video.

Very interesting video and a credit to Ollie and Full FIbre - I wouldn't have thought there was so much equipment at the street level - it's more like a mini exchange. Looking forward to seeing these guys building in some of the surrounding Shropshire towns in the future.

Those Polarium Lithium batteries are fantastic. As you mention, they can charge at a ridiculous rate. I have setup a trailer with a 6kW generator on a time switch to run for 1 hour a day to charge a bank of them that will keep a site up for weeks unattended without a generator running on light load making noise all day and night.

Fascinating. I have been watching several of these videos. This is the most informative. Watched as an electrician to get understanding of the technology and secondly to understand how it all works as my week old fibre broadband stops completely at 7 o'clock every evening since installation a week ago. Any ideas as my supplier can't seem to sort it out.

Great video, top notch engineering! In the event of a power outage, you guys would roll a truck with a generator and plug it in? Any concern of generator theft?
@nsmmedia
@nsmmedia Жыл бұрын
Hi Cory I’ve asked Ollie about this and he says: “Depending on the load of the cabinet (current draw) the cabinet can run for 5 hours on max load or current average load we can run for about 14 hours. So we can weather most outages. In the event we need a generator we have multiple responses, one is from a third party, or via ourselves if we need to. Theft is of course a concern on the generators so we have someone on-site with ours and if the third party get there then they are responsible.”

Do you think that above ground cabinet needs steel bollards, set in concrete, to protect it from accidents from cars or trucks? I'd hate to see it get damaged.

Their "fiber partners" are tier 1 carriers they buy the core back haul from. Not cheap
@user-qw6sf4he2s

The backhaul capacity installed seems rather anemic with only 20Gbps according to Ollie. Looking up the cards installed in that OLT, at most it could have 280Gbps of uplink capacity. How do they handle the load of 256 10G XGS-PON ports or 14,000 customers with that?
@nsmmedia
@nsmmedia 11 ай бұрын
Hi thank you for the comment, in answer to your question 20Gbps backhaul is only the starting capacity and when needed they will upgrade the backhaul links. They closely monitor the network and utilisation.

Yes, I have seen other OLT brands and models that have uneven uplink ports compared to the total capacity of the PON ports...

I know super fast FTTP is great but wouldn’t it be better and fairer for BT/open reach to put all their resources and money into providing areas with no fibre broadband at all, to having a basic fibre connection instead of upgrading areas that already have fibre to FTTP? Many places still rely on a very slow unreliable broadband using ancient copper cables giving around 5 mbps average, which are totally unsuitable for modern internet use. To work or study from home requires a fibre connection they can’t rely on copper broadband. Upgrading these places to fibre should be the top priority.

Openreach are rapidly deploying FTTP to many areas including those stuck on ADSL which are usually prioritised. Where openreach have fallen short so far many alt nets like Fibre Heroes in this video are filling in the gaps. If you live in an area that has sub 30mbps speeds and no planned FTTP deployments you may be eligible for the Government Gigabit Voucher Scheme. Feel free to email me info@fttppro.co.uk and I will be happy to help further 😊

very interesting architecture ..olt on a street cabinet,is it physically secure? that is an expensive piece of equipment
@nsmmedia
@nsmmedia Жыл бұрын
Hi Edwin, Thank you for your comment. As Olly explains in the video there are multiple layers of physical security in the cabinet. It is common here to have OLTs in street cabinets just as we have VDSL equipment in street cabinets.

@@nsmmedia actually it is impressive how there is separation of infrastructure, monitoring(OEM)/out of band, core/aggregation/backhaul and power segments, so that there is no confusion in case of a fault..very impressive btw..you guys figured out how to compact a site into a street cabinet

Two is technically "multiple"... Security is minimal at best. Short of burying it and stationing guards, it's about as good as it'll get. There are locks on the doors. If you look at the top of any of the open sections, there's a contact switch to indicate to a control system the door is open. There may or may not be camera(s) over looking it as well. I'd be more concerned with cars crashing into it than vandals and thieves. (They're expensive new. No one buys them used. And a stolen one is instantly recognized by serial numbers; so no support for it. EVER. So, almost zero reason to take the OLT. The batteries, however...)

Bad idea to put Full Fibre Cabinet next to main road as car accident or drink driving car could hit the cabinet and badly damaged will cost lots of money to get it replaced
@nsmmedia
@nsmmedia 7 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s not 100%ideal although the A road next to it is only 30mph as it’s in a built up area. There’s not a lot of other places it could have gone really I believe an alternative location they were going to place it got refused on planning. It is set back from the road and there are other objects between it and the road which also mitigate the risks somewhat.

The magic with PON fiber networks is the Passive part, all the splitters in the first half don't need any power. However the second half of this cabinet has all good expensive bits that would result in thousands of customers being affected by an outage.. In theory you can separate the 2 half's of the cabinets by miles with fiber I wonder if it's a eu/uk regulation thing with laser levels or they are trying just to get as much optical power they can for density.
