BT136 or BT137 cannot be marketed as a replacement for relays. A Relay can withstand 10Amps or more while BT136 has max current of 4 Amps of load and BT137 can hold max 8 Amps.

this has major blunder, dont connect arduino directly yo triac, even in diagrams you MUST show the optocoupler. this can be dangerous for anyone.

You can connect your uC directly to the TRIAC as long as the user is sufficiently protected from shock hazard.

Yes! The optocoupler part is totally missing . In the explanation, he talks about 5V from arduino to power the gate ! This is totally incorrect. Connecting an arduino to a 230V system will result in serious burn out, besides shock hazards.

There's a problem with your explanation about opto isolation The gate have to be connected to Arduino pin via the opto coupler, so the inner photo diode receives signal from the UC and transfers it to the gate via the photo transistor in the opto-isolator

After some quick searching I found several sources saying that not using an optocoupler could damage the Arduino under certain circumstances (or risk shock from touching otherwise safe DC circuit). I'm not at all knowledgable on the topic, but it seemed important to mention here. Anyway, thank you for the video! Your explanations are easy to follow and informative... looking forward to your other videos now too.

This is wrong, you cannot connect arduino directly to the triac, that either wouldn't work, or would blow up the arduino or the triac, depeding on how the arduino is powered up. You need an opto isolator

As the pins T1 and T2 can allow AC, can these be swapped ie T1 is used as T2 and vice-versa? I hope you read and respond. As body is connected with pin 2, will it obstruct swapping?

Great video man! Explains how the things work, and the example circuit is nice. It would be worth mentioning to anyone new to working with mains voltage that you should NEVER connect your circuitry directly to the mains, you must ALWAYS connect through an isolation transformer. I know that's outside of the scope of this video, but it's a very important point that someone new might miss out on.

I can't believe that you suggested connecting the opto isolator to 220V across the triac without . No mention of zero crossing or the different types of opto isolator and no mention of why you need an opto isolator. Someone is going to build this on breadboard and may get severely shocked.

+Jatin Kathuria you can easily switch 220volts with this easily. For maximum voltage I suggest you to take a look at the datasheet of the particular Triac you use.

I'm not sure if you have this correct - nothing on the planet would induce me to connect an arduino directly to a triac. I doubt if this setup would work properly anyway as you only have a positive voltage on the gate, therefore you would only get a half cycle of mains going through your load, which would make the lamp flicker dimly at mains frequency. Why don't you show us the circuit functioning and prove me wrong.

You cannot just say, put 5V on the gate. Voltage is defined as the potential difference between two points. Where is the reference to the 5V applied?

There is nothing here that says the AC supply is connected in any way to the ground of the computer PCB. As drawn, they are isolated, so there is no apparent loop for the current to flow in. Understanding how this works was driving me nuts as everyone says it's just 2 back to back SCR's with their gates connected. Based on the circuit diagrams I see, it cannot be 2 SCR's back to back with the gates connected. The gate control doesn't work that way in the circuits. Finally, after much searching, I found a pic showing the PN junctions that verified it was not. In one direction is a normal SCR, with the gate connecting to the N, in the other direction the gate connects to the P, not the N. Still working through how this works, it was late last night when I found that pic.

Try to be more realistic in demonstrating the proper way of doing it, like adding all required components so others don't screwed up when following your tutorial. Tutorial means imparting knowledge to others, not to make expensive mistake or electrocuting them
