it has a meaning. i mean the reason why namjoon had filters on him is that once someone commented on his live to stop using filters, also tae wearing glasses because people were saying that it doesnt look good on him, jin saying ‘its okay i love myself’ because most of the time people were saying bad things about him cause he often says he’s good looking and stuff, also they were making fun of yoongi because of his pale skin and now he is wearing snowwhite shirt. people were saying that they are westernized now and they dont care about korea but mv is full of korea stuff. also so many things but cant talk about everything now. the main point was that they will do whatever they want and no one can stop them.

the colors and effects are over-exaggerated on purpose to throw stereotypes about kpop music videos in the haters faces lmao. and the shots of them being multiplied and looking like animated dolls or robots is meant to hyperbolize the stereotype of kpop groups: “there’s too many of them”, “they all look the same”, etc. there’s also just lots of little symbols that show them doing what they want and not letting antis or anyone tell them what they can and can’t do. like the shirt V is wearing with the red hearts on it; once in an interview the interviewer was wearing that exact shirt and said it was awful, not knowing V owned one like it, and now V is wearing it here. also, the meaning of the snapchat filters showing up on RM was from a livestream he did a while back where he was putting filters on and hateful people in the chat kept telling him to stop doing them. and V’s glasses, he wore them in a livestream once and people in the chat told him they didn’t look good on him, and now he’s wearing them here. suga having snow white on his shirt when he’s been picked on for his pale skin, and j-hope having bugs bunny on his shirt could have something to do with how someone once told him in a livestream his sound effects are annoying (bugs bunny is very noisy and makes plenty of sound effects himself). it’s little things like that. also, the song uses South African instrumentals/beats and mixes them with traditional Korean sounds as well, and they actually do a South African dance called the Gwara Gwara in the choreo (at 14:32 in this video). overall, the MV is genius and the lyrics are firing back not only at their haters but at “fans” who try to control everything they do. 🙃

My favorite parts of the mv is the shark and when jimin lead the dance near the end. I love the shark part bc it represents ppl that are always attacking and judging them for what they are but you can see them just doing their thing not even caring for the shark. They love themselves no matter what. You also see them in a box too which can mean that are being protected from the shark and/or representing them being "idols" which are usually controlled (in other idols cases not specifically bts) However you see i love how you can get many conclusions from one scene. And the squad coming together at the end was just awesome.

They wear masks bc Korea has horrible air quality at times. They’ll even get warnings not to go outside depending on the level of dust in the air. But ppl wear it out of habit as well. 💜you guys btw

The outfits are African fabric called Ankara and also Korean traditional wear, the scenery is clearly from Africa(eg: lion king background, the colours and certain artefacts around like the two manequins by RM that looked like women with afro hair, the animal like people covered in coloured straws i.e its a traditional costume used in dancing in some African culture) , the beats is an infusion of South African and Korean beats...they did the gwara gwara and shaku shaku dance which is from South Africa and Nigeria, overall the whole video represented Africa and Korean culture. In my opinion although it was largely South African inspired, you can see traces of soo many African cultures in the video

Jhope does the drum noise, because people keep telling him to stop making the weird little noises he does. When V is squeezing through the group of people, it is a references to the "so called fans" that get in their space at the airports and kinda trample them and put their phones in the faces of the members.

BTS informed army that IDOL is inspired by South African music and dance while still adding traditional Korean symbols and music. The African beats are layered with traditional Korean rhythms, as well as the pounding of a Korean folk percussion instrument used in the performance of traditional Korean farmers' ensemble. It's 100% African + Korean, hence all of the giraffes you saw on the mv background. One of the dance they used here is the Gwara Gwara. And their theme for this album is a retro vibe.

I'm sure a bunch of people have answered this, but in regards to the people wearing the masks over their face, there's several reasons it's done in places like Korea & elsewhere. 1. The air quality in South Korea isn't great, so a lot of people wear the medical grade ones to filter out the harsh particles that can make them sick. Most people I know that have visited there from the US ends up having to buy one because they're not used to it & their throat feels shredded 1-2 days in to breathing the air there, though many Koreans are used to it so it doesn't have as harsh effects on them & so not everyone wears one all the time. 2. For idols & other famous people, it can be a way to hide their face when they have no makeup on in public or haven't shaved. Mostly done where paparazzi type groups will be, like at airports 3. Fashion. There's all different types & colors of masks, & they are often also worn as fashion statements. As for in this mv, as well as past ones where they've had huge groups of people like this, it's just to keep them faceless & keep the focus on the artists more.

The face mask things are actually really popular in Korea. They have multiple purposes like... 1. Air quality. The air isn't the best quality in Korea so they kinda protect them from pollution 2. Germs! Korean subways and streets are usually packed with people and the mask keeps away the germs 3. Style. Some people wear them because they look cool :p 4. Idols. Most of the time idols or famous people wear them to kinda hide part of their face, this could be for 2 reasons, the first one being they might not want to get instantly noticed by fans so the mask makes it trickier to notice them, or they might wear the mask because they feel a bit self conscious about their face without makeup. They also incorporated a South African dance, the gwara gwara, and Korean traditional dance moves and lots of Korean traditional motifs such as the bunny in the moon and the confetti animal creature. They incorporated a lot of cultural aspects because ppl are saying that BTS are becoming westernized just cuz they're so popular in North America. Also all the colours and over exaggerated cgi are just shading kpop industry cuz that's what kpop MVs are "known" for, in this sense they are being ironic. BTS typically do not use a lot of cgi, esp in this way. Idol is basically a big fuck you we don't care LMAO

They are the back up dancers, they wear those to protect they’re identity plus the MV is about BTS not the back up dancers - I don’t know if anyone else had picked up on it in their older MVs but the dancers aren’t all asian dancers they’re variety of different dancers!

They used south african and korean beats for the song. Most of the dance moves came from their old songs in the love yourself series.
