19:21 Kagemusha is a Japanese word that refers to a movie where they make a thief replace a boss to avoid enemy attacks. It also applies to politicians and how much of what you see on TV is fake, like Kagemucha. Suga and RM began their careers in underground RAP but when they started as idols they were criticized and harassed by many on the networks and by their former colleagues. Time and hard work proved them right.

BTS rappers RM & SUGA were underground rappers before they became idol group. They took alot if shit/hate from other rappers in korea. They said BTS rappers sucked and would never make it. The Cyphers are their response to the haters. Although Cypher 4, isn't really a cypher, it's more of a sarcastic goodbye to the haters. BTS rappers got the last laugh! Honestly the rap line of BTS are lyrical geniuses, RM literally is a genius with a 148 IQ, no joke. There is so much word play in a lot of their rap. Their cadence and flow is amazing. They write and produce their own music. 💜

You need to consider that these were written and recorded over time. RM and SUGA were vilified and mocked for becoming "Idols" after being part of the rap underground scene in S. Korea. Particularly, by an older rapper, B Free, who they thought was their friend. But he came after them after they joined BTS and resented them for having the audacity to call themselves rappers. Many in the underground rap-scene called them sellouts and girls... So the Cyphers started as a response to the attacks. What's so great, as you listen to the Cypher series, is you can hear their evolution in their skills and emotional transformation after being mocked and rejected. On Cypher 1, they most certainly are hurt and trying to prove themselves and fight back. Part 2, J-hope really starts to learn the rap craft (he started as a dancer and RM and SUGA taught him how to rap in the dorms) and are honing their art and growing as rappers and lyricists - but they're still defensive and pissed off. Cypher Part 3 - they're achieving some success as BTS and are feeling their power, starting to earn $ and getting some accolades - basically saying, "We told you so!". Part 4 - SUCCESS -here they are struggling with the trappings of success and what that all means. Fame and money came on so suddenly they weren't sure how to negotiate the fame, expectations and peoples' attitudes towards them. More importantly, they're growing older, and learning to love and value themselves. Not just based on success and money, but what that really means to accept yourself: your faults, greed, motivation, love, kindness, sexuality, power... Probably, unlike many other artists' , the Cypher's demonstrate the transformation from defensiveness and insecurity to self love and acceptance. Beautiful.

Suga and Rm were underground rappers before BTS

I love cypher 4 now but I had the same reaction when I heard it at first. Until I really understood what it all meant and that Bae wasn’t referring to the what we think it means. RM is being so sarcastic, J hope just swags on everything and Suga is just savage. RM and j hope basically like we are so successful there’s no need to even be mad anymore or give you my energy to haters and Suga’s like F that … I didn’t get the memo. Please watch them perform 3 and 4 live. It will hit so much different.

In my opinion, SUGA really is the king of the Cyphers. He was the most consistent throughout all 4. All 3 had nice verses in all cyphers but the last one sounded more like a song on RM and j-hope's parts, in my opinion - even though I love their verses. It's important to note that in RM verse in Cypher 4, he wasn't talking to a girl at all. He uses the "sorry bae" in a derisive way. He ironically apologizes for being there and doing his thing. "Bae", in his verse, is a shortened version of sunbae (선배) which is used to address their seniors in the industry. The same seniors that they used to look up to and got trashed on by when they chose to become idols. It's a smart way to tell them that he's still there and thriving and he won't apologize for it. RM just really has a way with words, haha 💜

I think B-Free was the one who pissed them the most, you should check out where he end up... In Cypher part 2 Suga said ,,Go to Hawaii " That line is directed towards him.

The cyphers were made so they can clap back to the haters. You have to consider that they were made at least within an year apart and they really show the growth of the rap line. the reason why the last cypher has a different feeling is because by that time they are grown men and they have accepted that no matter what they do - there will be haters who will hate on their hair, clothes and other stupid shit. So by this point they don't care anymore. They have nothing to prove to the haters anymore and there is not much left to say beside the fact that "Hey, I love myself and you, hater, should do the same and just stop hating." I had to say this cause Cypher 4 is my queen: In the first verse, RM is sarcastic, so he is not really sorry for all that he mentioned. Second verse, J-hope mentioned something they talked about before which is Cypher1-3 being written in anger. RM said, "We were too angry back then". So, in Cypher 4, they wanted to show their haters that: Hey, I don't give a f*** anymore, I got my fans supporting me and in the end, I'm doing much better than you are. That's why you don't see them going as hard in Cypher 4. They wanted it to look and sound chill but condescending at the same time. Oh and all of them are kind of diss tracks to everyone who looked down on them :D

You will understand better knowing the context. For example, RM got death treat several time. Also, the English translation of lyrics is not exactly captured. For example, ' 나이를 허투루 쳐먹은행님들' is more like older hyungs who has gotten older without proper maturation process. Because 허투루 means in vain.
