"Bring the pain" - with these three words, "On" - the title track from BTS's 2020 album Map of the Soul: 7 - comes alive, telling a story about hardship in the face of trials. The song's impressive music video likewise embodies this theme with symbols galore, from thorns to conch shells to doves and everything in between. This movie-like video has so much to offer us about the song's message, and it remains one of my favorite BTS music videos to this day. So what does it all mean? In this video, I discuss the song, the story, and give my interpretations for all the themes and symbols portrayed in the music video itself.
💜The ARMY Theorist Corner is a channel dedicated to analyzing, theorizing about, and celebrating the discography of BTS! I am a proud ARMY who wants to spread my love of BTS to more people and I hope that ARMYs - whether old or new - and maybe even some curious non-ARMYs will enjoy putting their thinking caps on with me as we dive deep into BTS's amazing songs and videos. Today, I'm focusing specifically on the official music video for the song "On" - which I like to call the "story video" - and how its many themes can help us understand the song and its message as a whole.
💜Any subtitles used during this video come directly from the source - for instance, subtitles on RM's live broadcasts come from VLive/Weverse Live's translations. Lyrics translations come from music video subtitles, as well as translation sources DoolsetBangtan and BangtanTranslations/BangtanSub's I'm not affiliated with either resource, but like many ARMY, I rely heavily on their amazing work. Hello, everyone! I hope you enjoy the video! A quick note - As I discuss the themes in this music video, I mention that some of them have their roots in various religions, faiths, and spiritual practices. Some of these are not my own faith practices and I admit to knowing very little about them, beyond the brief research I did that relates them to the symbols featured in the video. In my analysis, I am only taking a very small piece of the whole, and so obviously these topics are much more deep, complex, and rich than my analysis is expressing. It's not my intention to diminish, devalue, or oversimplify these concepts, and I am only presenting a very small fraction of them as they relate to this video. Therefore, please take my discussion of these things with a grain of salt, as my perspective and my platform are limited. Thank you!

Again, another fantastic video. Thank you for all your hard work, you really give us all a lot to think about. It’s also interesting to read your viewers comments, you are building a different kind of channel here, much needed.

Thank you for this video and for your fascinating theories. I agree that this MV is deliberately complex and invites ARMY to explore and to find their own meanings : this in fact closely mirrors the processes of Jungian psychology and therapy, so it's incredibly fitting! That very process of exploring complex symbology illuminates your own preoccupations and your own soul. What we see in them may in fact be a reflection of ourselves, and as we recognise that, we come to learn more about ourselves, recognising some elements and ignoring others, but perhaps moving to integrate those shadows to become a more complete person. It's potentially scary stuff.. Much of this MV is also deliberately dreamlike, which fits very comfortably with Jung's psychological theories. Of course it does - but within Jungian psychology the interpretation of those dreams is intensely personal : a symbol of positivity and growth for one person may in fact represent negativity and decay for another. I think that to some extent such personal interpretations may also be appropriate even here, because the MV is deliberately complex and even perhaps at times contradictory. That, however, may be decidedly unhelpful for ARMYs viewing this MV. Of course ARMY will reflect on the symbols in certain ways, drawing on our knowledge of BTS' history and musical culture - and probably miss many of them too! The references to the masked and robed men from previous MVs for example seems to me to be significant, but I never understood their significance in previous manifestations, and I also completely fail here. Other ARMYs probably have some grounded context into which to place these figures. I would be interested in hearing more about them. When thinking about ON I personally tend to focus more on the song itself than anything, with its defiant determination to turn toxicity and oppression into freedom and growth. As a reflection on BTS' experience it is incredibly powerful and even precise. The MV on the other hand is much more open. It could be seen as an invitation to ARMY to embrace their own struggle and explore their own lives, their own struggles and their own survival. If, as I suspect, it asks ARMYs to wander into the complex maze of their own individual psyches and even their pain, I think it is obliged to be obscure and vague, because whatever BTS or the MV director may have meant to imbue into the MV, what matters is what we, as ARMY, find there, and what we feel about it. I find that both beautiful and a little frightening. I suppose that, also, rather sums up everything we know about BTS themselves and about their journey.

Excellent video! I had a lot of the same thoughts while watching ON MV for the nth time. The two who I really pondered on were Jimin and Yoongi"s scenes. Jimin - drummer boy could be the song Little Drummer Boy with the poor boy who played his drum for a baby who will grow up to be villified AND honored in the future. Also the drummer boy in the military who played his drum to send messages to other parts of the army, and was a prime target for the enemy. Those piles of drums sort of mirrored Jin's room with all the cages. Both seemed to fit the theme, but the military drummer boy seemed a better fit. Yoongi's scene puzzled me more. My first thought was a cult of children. 🤣 Was it referencing the Children's Crusade? Or was he leading the children (Army?) out of the room to something different? The last one makes a lot more sense. I would honestly love for you to dig deeper into the fortress and other things. Thanks for a wonderful video. 💜

Thank you so much for watching! And thank you for sharing your own theories too, these are great! I love your thoughts about the drums, you're definitely right that it bears a lot of similarity to all of the bird cages. I never considered that before, but it makes so much sense. I've also seen the children with Yoongi described as a cult in other reviews of the song, but in my eyes, I could almost see them as a group of orphans - perhaps that's why they're holding candles? Whatever the case, your ideas on that are terrific! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. ☺

For me, the "thorns" on V's neck look more like the cracks in the earth on a dry lake, river or ocean bed. I love this. I'm putting together a binder of my own analysis, BTS lyrics and such! Yes more please!!!!

I'm watching this again and I just noticed when you're talking about Suga being in the room with identically dressed children if you look behind him on the wall you'll notice a series of 4 triangles 2 inverted 2 right side up. the first upright triangle, ( magically speaking) could be the alchemic symbol for fire, the next triangle, (inverted with a line through it) is earth. the one on the end, (inverted triangle) is water. Can't see the other upright triangle but if there is a line through it than that's air. This was my long roundabout way of saying that it could be a depiction of the four elements! I'm a witch so how I didn't notice that before is beyond me but it's got me excited if you couldn't tell! I am of course not suggesting that this could be a depiction of a cult or "evil" or what many in western media seemed to think magic and witches are. Witches are nature worshipers though every witch is different and worships in their own way.

This channel is very interesting. I don’t know how so many talented guys ended up together to create such deep concepts. Yes, their music is awesome and they are definitely easy on the eyes but they are much more than that. They are true artist. Their thought processes are unbelievable. I picked up on a lot of themes including the religious ones. Noah, thorns, drummer & conch shell. I was part of an Indian community and attended Pujas which started with the officiant blowing a conch shell. Many seem to be Christian symbols including JK finding relief in the water which may refer to salvation although he is never submerged but instead he swallows the water. Oh so many things. I am a retired art therapist and BTS's work is a fine work of art. I also use symbolism in my art. Please keep doing your analysis . Keep dreaming. Thank you .
