Have you, as a BTS fan, been told that their music videos are just too difficult to analyze and that you shouldn't try? Are you a new ARMY who finds yourself curious about certain lyrical references in various BTS songs, but you don't quite know how they fit into the grand scheme of things? These things can seem intimidating, but fear not! There are actually a few very simple steps anyone can take to help them unlock deeper meaning in BTS's songs and videos! All you need are the right tools and the willingness to do a tiny bit of exploring.
💜The ARMY Theorist Corner is a channel dedicated to analyzing, theorizing about, and celebrating the discography of BTS! I am a proud ARMY who wants to spread my love of BTS to more people and I hope that ARMYs - whether old or new - and maybe even some curious non-ARMYs will enjoy putting their thinking caps on with me as we dive deep into BTS's amazing songs and videos. In this video, I'll be briefly touching on how I think anyone can get started analyzing BTS using a few examples - including songs like "N.O", "Baepsae", and "Dionysus."
💜During this video, I mention using lyric translation sources. Nearly all the lyric translations I reference come from BTS's own music video subtitles, or from either BangtanTranslations/Bangtan Subs or DoolsetBangtan. I'm not affiliated with either resource, but their lyric translations and explanations are easily the best, so I recommend them for your own lyric analysis purposes. I'd also like to mention the channel Enjoy BTS More - again, I'm not affiliated with them, but they do amazing work in bringing correct and accurate subtitles to as many videos as they can, so they're a great resource.

🎙️I apologize for any quality issues with my audio in this video! I'm still new to the recording and editing process, so I'm working out some bugs. I hope to improve my audio quality very soon, so thank you for your understanding!
🎥 All video clips are related to BTS or their work. I do not claim to own any of these clips

Rachel! I am a 60 year old, baby ARMY. I discovered the BTS world in mid-2022, after becoming enchanted by the song “Christmas Tree”, from the Korean drama Our Beloved Summer. Had to know who the artist was (found out it was V from BTS), then immediately needed to know if they had any other songs that I could put in my regular music rotation. Well…umm, more that you’ll ever know! I tripped into the rabbit hole and have been down there ever since! I wholeheartedly want to thank you for your channel. Loved this well thought-out and delivered piece of work and the theme of curiosity/research hooked me. In the past year I’ve learned so many interesting things about Korean language, society, history and culture. I have learned so much about HYBE/Big Hit and the economics and business side of K-Pop. I’ve learned so much about the members, how they arrived and their rise to collective fame. It’s been such a pleasure to stand witness to their individual successes, as well. It’s been a fun ride so far, and I appreciate your efforts, have subscribed and can’t wait to see what’s next! You are my kind of people and I so glad I found your channel today!

I am excited to find this channel. I am in my 70's and love the challenge to explore BTS on. all levels. I have been ARMY for a few years and have watched many of what KZfaq has to offer about BTS. Their messages are what makes me love them. It excites me that these messages are being spread across the world. I am a lifetime.activist in search of justice for everyone. Unfortunately "to explore BTS on all levels" means to deal with the business side as well and the pressures that come from Hybe (shareholders) and the economic system we have. And that apart from specifically Korean problems. After PTD I nearly gave up on them, but then there was festa 2022 and now the solo albums. But JK's album all in English and "seven" (don't misunderstand, I like the song) being unlike any BTS song/message, hm....Makes you wonder.

@@siggispock5102 I know exactly what you mean. I became a fan during MOTS: 7 and fell in love with the meaning surrounding that album, so a lot of the things that came after MOTS have been very unexpected. I think that's part of why I want to highlight the lyrics, music videos, themes, and album concepts, because I never want those things to get lost. I don't think I'll reach that many people, but I can sure try. ☺

@@TheARMYTheoristCorner Hi, that was a fast response, lol. I became an Army around the same time and was fascinated they used C.G.Jungs "map of the soul" as concept. I am not too keen on Jung myself and I fear they aren't very knowledgable about his theories but this doesn't matter much. Concepts like "persona" or "shadow" (actually the unconscious) can be quite helpful, it's amazing they are used in pop songs. And this in a "fan-centered" band. When I reread Hesses Demian I felt this urge to tell them, careful, his ideas let to fascism, lol. But I have come to understand that there must be sth like a global pool of literature/knowledge (in English) from which ppl like Bang PD (and what he called "his team") draw their inspiration. Remember RM said in one vlive Bang had recommended him Milan Kundera's book (I forgot the English title) and it had been like a bible to him when he was younger (to Bang). My point, while the early songs up to Wings were written and composed mostly by the rapline (they had been given free hand), afterwards the influence and ideas of Bang and the ppl he had collected around him had a stronger influence. It doesn't mean they didn't write and contribute any more, far from it, but their songs often were "plowed over" as Yoongi said. The more fame, the more control. I believe a lot of what we see is Bangs idea of the world as much as BTS's. Think of all the MV Lumpens did or BTS universe. As I agree with a lot of their ideas I don't complain, lol. I love Blood, sweat and tears, but to take Nietzsche out of context, ups, not advisable. You are right, it would be a great pity if all the ideas which went into the production would get lost. But I agree, it will be difficult to reach ppl who are not already interested. It is, what it is, sigh. Well, anyway, good luck to you!!!

This is so true! Remember the old joke about the FBI recruiting Army? Rabbit holes abound in the BTS world. I've studied/researched into astronomy, astrology, Korean history, the language of flowers, black holes, constellations, the meaning of colors, Korean slang, mathematics, read all kinds of books, wiki articles, and so much more. All of that to understand the lyrics of a song. But it's fun!

Thanks for this. The reason I am ARMY was first for the music and dance, but then, very quickly for the message, the subtlety, the symbolism. Its fine to love BTS for what to me are superficial elements, but A that misses so much, amd B BTS work SO hard on all the other elements, they clearly are important and they WANT us to explore them. They don't care about us getting the same meanings as them, but they love our ideas. They've said so, so many times! I've come to enjoy their three English pandemic songs but my first reaction was a gut wrenched dismay. In hindsigtt I think BTS deliberately chose NOT to invite us to think because for too many people that was impossible or overwhelming because simply living was hard enough, and they just wanted to offer comfort. That worked well but I was so relieved when Korean content returned. I still think that the main if not the only thing that makes BTS differrnt from other idol groups is the sheer sophistication of their message. No other group even tries as far as I can see. I also think that their multi-layered message is fundamental to their international success. Fans who are interested enough to look into those Korean lyrics find there is so much more and are quickly hooked! I was.

Beautifully said! And a very nice take on the English songs too. I agree, I was so glad and relieved when the boys returned to Korean content, especially because it made me sad to think how many people heard those songs and assumed there's nothing deeper in BTS's music and message. But all the more reason to discuss how great and meaningful their discography is, and just how deep it all goes. :D Thank you so much for your great comment!

I love literature and that includes poetry and music lyrics. At first I was told that I needed to understand the Bangtan Universe. And yes, that helps and makes it fun. Then I heard that they indeed do write their own lyrics in part or in whole. Bang PD wanted them to tell their stories. So a year ago after FESTA 2022 😢, I began diving deep in their lyrics and writing them down in a journal after looking up multiple translations. (It’s oddly relaxing.) I know the Most Beautiful Moment series follows the Bangtan Universe whose trail I followed. However, after studying the lyrics, those songs were saying to me that these lyrics were truly about THEM, the group. Everybody loves “Run”, but looking back on that song and others combined especially with the BTS book and Suchwita episodes, I am pretty sure I am correct at least in part. And it makes the songs all the more meaningful. You really need to watch the recent Suchwita episode with J Hope (obviously filmed before he enlisted.) They mention things about the groups past that are not in the book. That is my long way of saying I love this type of thing! Good luck with your channel!-62 year old ARMY.

OK. You got me when you highlighted “There is no shame in not knowing something.” My life’s experiences led me to FINALLY be enrolled at a prestigious California university when I was 36 years old. The majority of my fellow students were in their early twenties. Those 16 extra years of life experience and my own personal intellectual perspectives, made it possible for me to support my younger colleagues through my ability to “translate” the official, abstruse accepted vocabulary and perspective “required” of “scholarly work”, where the perspective of the author was “If you don’t understand what I am saying, it just proves that you don’t belong here.” How I LOATH elitism!

I am a comparatively new army infact I am very new to the whole k pop genera and South Korean culture as a whole... However since I have learned of bts from 2020 onwards I have been very interested in the psychology on the team as whole and as individuals and I find them absolutely fascinating.. I feel so lucky that I tumbled across this channel because I found this analysis absolutely fantastic and I hope you would continue to bring more such content... Thank you for your hard work... This was very well thought out and well presented.. I absolutely agree that bts should be taught in colleges and school not only for their impact on society and finance but also for their creativity and symbolism... . there are very few courses on symbolism available and most are stuck in 1400 ..we need newer topics and bts as a topic is fantastic and complicated it will be so fun to unravel their absolutely genius minds.. I can't wait for the next video ❤❤❤❤ a 47year old Army

I agree with you. My interest in BTS started with the lyrics. I had followed Shinee for some time but couldn't take the superficiality at some point. I didn't expect BTS to be different but they truly were. I even heard their songs on a demonstration: NO, FIRE and NOT TODAY. And I still love those early critical and - in a wider sense- political songs. There are later ones like Dionysus or Dis-ease which are gems too, but I get a bit depressed when I look at the lyrics of i.e. Dynamite. I found RM's comments on their albums very useful and interesting too. I look forward to your next vid.

The BU and theories surrounding it is what got me so addicted in the first place. I've always been curious and once I find a new obsession to pick apart and analyze I'm not stopping until I learn as much as I can. I've never had 1 topic capture my attention for so long and as deeply as with BTS before or since, It's now been 8 years and I'm still completely captivated by their artistry. My biggest regret is not being able to go to HYYH tour, those albums truly changed my life and I honestly have no idea how my life could've changed and where I would be rn had I not found them. If you believe in core memories & core life moments, HYYH was one for me. Prior I would've never believed an artist could hold such significance over my life, now I can't imagine how it would've gone and who I would be without them.

The SKY reference I always thought it was referring to 'Elite' South Korean Universities but I never delved deeper to discover the names of those Elite South Korean universities. I was simply thought along the lines of they must be like the elite Universities here in the UK like Cambridge and Oxford. All the reference's to spoon's really made me giggle as I understood it straight away being British where we use the term Silver spoon so I started looking at the overall lyrics to the song in the context of 'Being born with a silver spoon in your mouth' verse being not beginning born with a silver spoon

Dear Army Theorist Corner, I believe at this point you will have to give some kind of structure, like discussing/interpreting one particular MV. Otherwise the discussion/interpretation will be all over the place. It could be quite interesting to do that. But an important point: the MV's i.e. are not made by BTS but by the company and its staff, the directors, researchers etc. So what we see is Bang's and his teams ideas, very often Lumpens in the early vids. BTS are mere actors, even though they wrote some of the lyrics. This is true for other areas as well. We are often made aware of the "script-ors", meaning even what we hear in interviews etc is not necessarily their thoughts and ideas. When they seemingly are all by themselves there are 30 or more ppl in the room watching them. You surely are aware of that too. It might not even be what they themselves want. I remember RM being very irritated about the "Spring day" MV. He didn't feel it was correct to relate it to the ferry disaster. That wasn't his intention when he wrote the song. Anyway they leave it to us to interpret their work, which is very clever too, lol.

Just asking did you notice how sus BTS is, behind the scenes of Dope? They keep talking about numbers and the camera would also deliberately capture the floor no. in the elevator. It is also same in their concept photos of dope, there's a lot of sus writings. Also in the MV of Dope, did you see the red banner at the back that has German words on it? There's also another German banner deeply hidden behind the pillar with lights in the right side. It has something to do with German history where the German tried to protest. Their outfits, their choreography, the lyrics, the double meaning of the Dope title. Dope is definitely a hidden masterpiece 👌 Also in Fire MV, do you guys know how sus Fire MV is? The title alone is sus since it also have another alternative title, I think it referenced 2 movies, Burning and River? Both seems to potray social Injustices. I don't know their real titles, anyways the paintings, the burning car, the empty indoor swimming pool, the boiled words that kept repeating, the intentional bombing, the burning plane, the room full with vandalism, the dark figures, the party room that they destroyed, I'm pretty sure some of it is connected to Dope. Same goes with Mic Drop. It's like they're referring to a Police corruption or something. Like the burning of evidences, the escaped prison halls, the falling people, the kneeling choreography, the burning cars, the CCTV rooms, the dark figure with red eyes in the jap ver.the illusion of the set of the interrogation room. Same with Boy with Luv MV, I know there wasn't a lot going on in the MV, but why is RM'S reflection in a prison cell?

Please replyyyy 20:48 Have you noticed the writings in the wall written in German as well? Could you please make a video about what's it all about. There are 2 sayings here. One is the obvious. But there is also something on the right side as well.

Hi there! I admit I noticed the two sayings for the first time while editing this video, and didn't know much about them. A few comments here got me very interested in learning more, though, and so I'd love to discuss Dope/these elements at some point in the future. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! 💜

@@TheARMYTheoristCorner it's okay, I don't think many ARMYs noticed it either, they're so good at distraction... But I kind of get it why they hide it well, because their messages are kinda controversial & rebellious and so anti establishment. Dope stood out to me, I still wasn't able to cypher it fully. Even the choreo is suspicious, i think it has meaning. I think the lyrics as well could be about different perspectives, one from the working class, and the other one is from the elites who exploits laborers. It may be a sketch but hey this is BTS. The promotion & behind the scenes of Dope was also highly sus, each clip from each member, besides suspicious numbers written in the bg & props, they all say normal stuff but I can't help but notice for some reason they say numbers, could be a date or time who knows. Like when Jimin said "everyone do you what these numbers mean" but then he just smiled and brushed it all off. The numbers were on the props he was holding.

@@TheARMYTheoristCorner just like jhope's lines in ma city, those numbers are probably dates of a tragic incident that their government hid. In jhope's verse in ma city he referenced a specific time where people would unite & there was a movement from his hometown but they all got massacred. It was the gwanju uprising I think

Hello! There is an option for captions called "auto-translate." If you click it, you can select your language. I am still very new to KZfaq, so I don't know if it will work well, but I hope it helps! 😄

Being stupid is a choice, not a destiny. An uneducated people think that their assumptions are the facts, because most people are not comfortable that they don't understand something. So they make their assumption as the fact, and do not ask to find the facts. You can find many comments on social media from that kind of people. More uneducated, more confident about their knowledge (Dunning-Kruger effect). Why people like some of BTS songs, because they are smart. Only smart people can appreciated a clever lyrics.

And I believe BTS make their lyrics so clever in part because they believe we can all be smart enough to understand them, which is why I love talking about them :D

Nice work! I remember watching another video explaining that Dionysus is also the god of East or from the East and that might have been another reason that elevated the meaning behind that song. This is what happens when you have a leader with a 148 IQ in a band.

Yessss, you're so right about that, I'm always grateful we get the gift of Joon's intellect in so many songs. I also remember reading something about Dionysus being from the East - he's even described in some epitaphs as having "triumphed in Asia," which makes it even more perfect. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I'm so glad you enjoyed!

@@siggispock5102 Yes, that is true! Joon described J-Hope as his "relief pitcher" for that song. I'm not sure if they had the concept already in place and Hobi wrote the lyrics or if Hobi built it from the ground up. I'd have to head back in and do some research on that. Either way, we stan our talented rapline! 👏

Yes according to Greek Mythology Dionysus came from the East and the other god's thought he had gone mad because he'd spent too long with humans.

I think you are incorrect in thinking that other people think the same way as you. You are talking about your own shortcomings, and condescendingly apply them to others. I dont claim to understand all BTS work but I find your approach quite rude to other Armies.

Hi there, I'm sorry if my choice of words gave the impression that I'm diminishing my fellow ARMYs; I'm actually hoping to do the opposite with this channel and with this video. The reason why I made this video is because I've sadly seen the notion that "BTS's work is difficult to understand, so why bother trying" - and that sentiment makes me quite sad. My hope was to show that anyone can dive deep with BTS's work, whether they're a brand-new ARMY or have been with the band for years. I sincerely hope I didn't imply that I somehow know everything these is to know about these topics (because I definitely, definitely do not, LOL) or that my way of analyzing is the only way (because it's definitely not). I just want to give an opposite point of view to the belief that BTS is too hard to understand by showing how much there is to appreciate. Thanks for the feedback!
