So I have followed you on You Tube for a while and watch most of your videos, this one caught my eye because I have just purchased a Fozi Phono box X4. I am powering a pair of Dayton Audio C Notes with a Fosi BT20A and to be honest it sounds pretty good. I have been impressed with what these little amps can do. Cheers 🍻

I got my S400 MKII abut 3 weeks ago so I'm still in the breaking in period but I love these speakers. Can't imagine how much better they'll get. They are powered by my Jeff Rowland 125 power amp. I no longer play my music at concert levels so these are great.

Great vid and review matt, buchardt is kinda on my list, I’m pretty sure my next bookshelf purchase is going to be a pair of css critons tho, hopefully that’s my winter project. Congrats on your almost 5k subs, keep up the great work and next thing you know you’ll be drowning in subs, both kinds!!!😂

Thanks! Buchardt’s have been a lot of fun. The CSS Critons is another speaker I would like to build, I have not had them in house to test yet but from what I gather they will have a similar sound profile to Buchardt. Drowning in both subs would be welcomed as well haha.

I very much enjoyed and appreciated your detailed, inspiring review. So, no shame to my family name 😂 Seriously, I’ve been enamored by the MkII’s ever since they came out. I was even looking to purchase but chickened out due to a small listening space.

Noted, the LSiM has always been a good listen, many great qualities but one area they won’t match up is in the bass department, the S400 is tough to compete with there.

Nice review, Matt. Those crossover components show the advantage of buying from a direct sale company. It's nice to see the price reflected in the quality of the build and not going straight to dealers. The Scandinavians seem to like the direct sale business model ( see Arendal) and there is a lot to be said for it.

nice reviews and perspective being shared, I like that you do present budget view , Thanks for having the Fosi Audio V3 giveaway , is it a worldwide giveaway? What I love about Fosi Audio company and their R&D dept is that they've managed to improve using better components and bottom chip design path even when this TI chip variant in many models are more of just the same, while V3 has better caps, inductors, better cooling etc.

Great Job & what about music with electric bass guitar?.............................. Can the Buchardt S400 MKII's reproduce electric bass notes or do they need a sub-woofer to play those notes? Awesome work! Reggae, Funk & Brass 🔈🔉🔊

Solid review, a bit out of my price range 🥲. Looking to grab some debut B5.2's once on sale. Im looking for a good price to performance front ported bookshelf speaker for my first setup that im piecing together while being limited on space. Was looking to purchase the V3 to pair with the smsl su-1 and wiim pro. Can you recommend any good value speaker cables? For now im settled on buying ELAC SENSIBLE SPEAKER WIRE $130 for 10 ft but am open to suggestions. It's the last piece of the puzzle that im a bit puzzled on 🤔 Would really value your input on this.

That should be a good combo! As for speaker cables check out Blue Jeans Cables on Amazon, simple, well built and priced really fairly. The Canare 4s11 cable should be all you need.

Is the Buchardt i150 the best amp for the S400 Mk2 speakers or would the Audiolab 9000A be a better choice ?
@MattCoykendall1
@MattCoykendall1 Жыл бұрын
Couple things to consider, the Buchardt amp is cheaper, especially if you get the discount from a speaker purchase. The audiolab is a fantastic amp but does not have any dsp so you would need to add a mini dsp on top of the purchase price. Basically consider your needs, things like if you have a troublesome room that needs a lot of correction.

You talked a lot about bass reproduction and if it’s enough or really deep; what you should have said, is that to have some enjoyable amount of bass you need some juice, meaning that with low listening volumes, there is not much bass, so you need to be around ca. 77 db or more.
@Gadgetdad007

I’ve heard that many people are having software problems with their i150 amplifiers and this is putting me off buying one. Have you ever had any issues with your i150 amplifier and how powerful is this amp.
@MattCoykendall1
@MattCoykendall1 Жыл бұрын
Having only used it around a month I can say no issues to date, the dsp functions all worked as expected as well. Possibly some firmware issues were being worked out prior, but that I wouldn’t be able to answer.

Just a quick comment from past experience ... the more complex the crossover, the less likely a speaker will be efficient. Simple rule... every bit of current that does not go through a driver is a waste of amplifier resources.
@MattCoykendall1
@MattCoykendall1 Жыл бұрын
I think a lot of the lower efficiency we see here is a by product of improving the lower frequency response as well. A trade off that I am ok with as these were still reasonable to drive. Thankfully clean wattage is quite easy to come by these days as well, times are good.
@Douglas_Blake_579
@Douglas_Blake_579 Жыл бұрын
@@MattCoykendall1 Good point ... But I do have to wonder how they went about improving the low frequencies via the crossover. That is usually done with cabinet tuning and ports. It is possible to improve the _comparative_ lows by sacrificing highs... it is common that a reduction in the upper midrange is heard as an increase in bass. That would require some serious messing around with notch filters and lpads ... but I suppose it could be done. The thing I've noticed of late is a steady increase in crossover parts counts. One set of 2 way speakers I was asked to work on had upwards of a dozen components in the crossover. By the time I was done I had it down to 5, in a series crossover that really helped that speaker come to life. The one you're showing us in the video has 18. The impression I get is that whoever is doing this design work isn't really up on their electronics skills, is using computer modelling and making the mistake of adding stuff until it works, instead of honing their skills to find the simplest solution. It's kind of like building with legos... just keep adding new bricks until you get what you want, even if it is twice as big as you planned. Back in the good old days it was common to find a coil and maybe a couple of caps ... but those days are long gone. Yes wattage is cheap ... but wasted energy is not.

I am thinking that Buchardt make my kind of speakers! But, happily I have speakers that I have designed and built - that I really love! As it happens Buchardt uses woofers from SB Acoustics, and so do I. My design is a stand mount mass loaded transmission line, and it uses the same driver (I'm pretty sure) as the S300. The S400 uses the next higher line, and it is very similar as was mentioned, but has a larger motor and greater excursion. It has the same Mms, and 34Hz Fs vs 35Hz for the lower priced unit. My MLTL-6 speaker has a fundamental frequency of 32Hz, by way of the mass loading with the air inside the TL coupling with the woofer more and more as the frequency goes down. It also has very open sounding midrange, because there is very little "spring" inside the cabinet, because of the TL being open at the end; so it seems to be acting closer to an open baffle in the midrange.
@MattCoykendall1
@MattCoykendall1 Жыл бұрын
Great minds think alike right? The SB Acoustics are great drivers.
@NeilBlanchard
@NeilBlanchard Жыл бұрын
@@MattCoykendall1 Right, they are quite good, indeed! The 6" paper cone 4 ohm driver that I use (and I think is the one in the S300?) is *extremely* well behaved up at the top of its range. It has a very mild breakup mode that is quite narrow and only ~4dB - it is better than almost any other driver I have seen.
