Glue the cap to the pipe then put a screw thru it from the underside of the bucket. This will keep the bottom of the pipe centered in the bucket.

I have been looking for a video showing a way to do this, but for the purpose of placing a turnball/totem tennis pole into -we need something fairly portable but still with enough ballast ...so your video has been super helpful in giving me encouragement... cheers for that 👍 as I appreciate you taking the time to document your process

very nicely done. In the past, I've used fiberglass camo poles as well as PVC. The only problem is that sometimes the concrete will not grab them and they can turn. This is easily fixed by inserting a nail or small rod into the pipe before you sink it down into the concrete. This prevents the pipe from turning after the concrete has hardened.

Thanks so much for posting this. I have made several of these large and small. I use them for ham radio, holiday decorations, traffic fence for garage sales, and many other things. I sand the bucket and PVC down and use camouflage paint from Walmart. They are hidden in the trees and the kids always love the camouflage paint design. I just hope I don’t throw my back out one of these days lugging it around. I have to work on sealing the lid from raini and creatie drain holes where the pvc pipe sits in the bucket.

Chris, you're welcome. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Very good point about sealing the lid, I need to make that a priority! Also thanks for the idea of using camo paint. Thanks again... John, N3LUD

Thanks for the great idea!! I made a variation of this, using sand inside the bucket, holding a section of 1 1/4", then a 1" section about 8' long with antenna attached on top. Works great!

I did this project also, but used 60-lb sack of concrete. I tried to use two 10-ft metal poles that fit together, but after mounting my dual band antenna, it proved to be top heavy. Here is a tip: use a larger diameter base pipe than 1.5 inches inside diameter. If I had it to do over again, I'd use at least 2.0-inch inside diameter pipe, probably 3.0 inches. You will not find many supports that will fit into a 1.5 inch hole, unless you settle for 10-ft or less.

I thought about doing this for a longer setup. By using a bigger tub or bucket. Drill 4 holes in the bottom drive 4 ground rods through the holes so half of the rod is in the ground and half is just to the top of the bucket. Place 2" galvanized piping in the middle pour the concrete mix in, let it set, then place a reducer 2" to 1 1/2" in then screw the 1 1/2" pipe to that, then use a u bolt and mount your antenna.

I want to do this so I can put a 10-foot metal pole in it, with my MFJ-1786 magnetic loop antenna on top. That will make this thing very top heavy, so I will put it inside a very large planter, then probably put gravel, some large rocks, and soil in it to hold it in place.

Will be trying this today for a Satellite dish. My intension is to dig this into the ground for added protection from the wind. I am using a 1 5/8 diameter chain link fence post. I need to figure out how to keep the post straight while the quick set cement hardens.

Love it! Where do you get that thread adapter that goes onto the end of the painter pole? Also, how high can you extend the painter pole before it becomes unstable? I've got a Mr LongArm painter pole (23.2' max length) that I bought from Lowes and I put a 20m Hamstick dipole near the top recently. I think that if the wind caught it, the setup could be pretty dangerous. Now I'm thinking that a better application might be hanging a EFHW antenna wire off it.

If portability was necessary I dare say you could use many substances to make weight such as sand,water, dirt and rocks etc that you could empty out at the end of the day.

Nice idea n3lud, but was wondering how do you keep the painters pole from spinning around inside the center PVC pipe - is the pole pressure-fitted inside the pipe?.thanks
@n3lud5 жыл бұрын
Spinning has not been an issue. I mostly use them for vertical antennas when doing public service events. However even with the Buddipole HF antenna it has not moved much. Drilling a hole through the PVC and the pole could then hold a bolt that would prevent it from spinning.
@JP-sz1fi5 жыл бұрын
great idea to hold the pole in place - thanks
@TheLightningStalker3 жыл бұрын
You should really glue the cap onto the end of the pipe. There is a chance the pipe could start working its way out and it could be difficult to get it back in because of concrete dust.

John, you did not mention how big the bag of cement was (in pounds) and then how much water you put into the cement (in gallons). I want to duplicate your efforts but don't want to dilute the cement with too much water or not use enough cement mix. 73 de N2LRB
@johndigiovanni9 жыл бұрын
Jose thanks for watching. I used Quikrete cement in a bag but did not use exact measurements. I would suggest you use the red bag of Quikrete that they see to set mail box posts. You can get it at Home Depot or Lowes. Add some mix and check the how heavy it is. Use the weight that is comfortable for you and not to heavy to carry depending on your situation. Add the water a little at a time and mix. I just used my best judgement. Sorry I can't be of more help with the measurements. There are good for temporary portable use. Just be careful on windy days that you don't put the mast up to tall as it can still blow over. 73, John, N3LUD

John DiGiovanni Thanks for getting back to me. I will endeavor 'mix' my own bucket. If nothing else I could use it at home when checking my VHF/UHF antenna's SWR.

what is the height of the mast shown here
@n3lud6 жыл бұрын
In the video I had my short painters pole which I believe is less than six feet collapsed. I do extend this up so the bottom is 8 to 10 feet. I also use a longer painters pole that is about 7 or 8 feet collapsed. You have to be careful how high you extend it. Out in the open I have also secured it with guy wires. I did not show it here but have also extend the pole up about higher to support the center of an HF dipole antenna.
