Buckfast vs Sodastream. Will it carbonate?

A popular beverage choice for the discerning wine connoisseur. By adding large quantities of sugar, caffeine and other chemicals to this fruity flavoured electric-soup, those naughty monks have made it irresistible to the palate, but also inclined to invoke violent behaviour after imbibement of their medicinal marvel.
Let's try carbonating it in the Sodastream to see if it makes it even better.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.co...
This also keeps the channel independent of KZfaq's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

I had a Buckie binge over the best part of a week in Glasgow, I had the worst comedown on the morning when I got my flight, just about made it through customs and then as I sat in my seat I immediately sweated through my jeans. I trust that buckfast doesn't *make* anyone go violent, but rather like any alcohol it reduces the inhibitions of the consumer towards violence. I feel that this is worth pointing out because otherwise too much simplification leads to misdirected belief of the causes of societal problems which leads us (at least those of us in the States) to respond with Prohibition and Reefer Madness rather than addressing the underlying issues such as poverty and mental health.

Hey Clive, just a few tips from a soda tech whose employer is located in the Atlanta area (if you know what I mean). Your tasting drink foams up from the temperature of the glass and the multitude of nucleation points within. Try chilling the glass first and discarding the first pour. Hopefully you'll find that the second pour retains much more of the carbonation.

Having worked with someone from Rab C Nesbitt hill in Glasgow whilst he was living so close to the Monks that Buckfast was available in the local Chemist under Tonic wines, so many thought it was posh, I also have to agree but there where local influences.. I failed in my attempts at trying to get him to shout Hey Jude instead of Hey you, but that little change might have saved many a fight. Sadly the people who lived around the Monks where extreme racists at the time and he only had to open his mouth for people to set about him. Now thirty years later he's back home and Bucky is available in plastic half bottles which is the biggest selling item in the area. The bottles were implemented after a meeting with the Monks. The savings for the NHS have been massive. The number of lost eyes, has hit the floor and everyone is happy again. The area around the Monks in Devon is so cut off that thirty years ago many had only seen a black man on the BBC, and any thoughts of race had been instilled in them by the BBC. The area is lucky if it can get CH4 nevermind a mobile signal. Recently a local boss was shocked to see a left handed person at work, others around him pointed out that the work was immaculate and couldn't be faltered but he was sure he must be on something, and he'd never be able to concentrate with them arm movements going on, so it's best he leaves immediately. The rest of the company sat in silence, shocked.

I spent a year working in Glasgow, I'd walk by the Clyde each morning playing spot the empty Buckfast bottle, a different one every morning. I first tried it 11 months into my time there after three sips, it went down the drain and even being washed down, it had an odd hue and viscosity. It tastes like wine if you described it to a martian and they tried to replicate it from your description using lizard technology.

On a train from Liverpool to Glasgow, I went to the toilet and when walking back to my seat, I saw a ned drinking from a large bottle of Buckfast. I was careful to avoid eye contact.

Well hell. Just found this out on the googles. ITS ILLEGAL IN THE USA “Where Buckfast really packs a punch is in how much caffeine it has: a single 750ml bottle has 281 milligrams, or around as much as 10 cans of Coke. It might well be illegal in the U.S., where the Food and Drug Administration has banned drinks that combine alcohol and caffeine.”

I carbonated some "Tazo" commercially-made iced tea last week, and like the Buckfast wine, it foamed a lot and lost much of its carbonation when the cap on the bottle was slowly opened. Any beverage that has suspended particles in it will do that, since the particles act as nucleation sites for the carbon dioxide, causing froth to form as the gas comes out of solution. My home-built carbonation rig consists of a 20-lb aluminium gas cylinder, an industrial pressure regulator, various bits of plumbing, a Cornelius ball-lock fitting and several stainless steel carbonation caps ordered through eBay. Using PET one-liter soda bottles, I normally carbonate at 50 psi (345 kPa), shaking the bottle for 30-60 seconds. It gives me excellent results with reverse osmosis filtered water that has been chilled to near freezing. Although building the rig last August was expensive - over US$300 - the gas cylinder refills are cheap and the cost should be recovered within a year compared to operating a SodaStream unit or buying bottled seltzer from the supermarket.

I grew up in Plymouth some 20-odd miles from Buckfastleigh where Buckfast Abbey is located. Buckfast Tonic Wine really is still made there as it always has been. I just read an article that said there was a staff of 27. Not a huge mega-factory but until I discovered there was a market in Scotland I had no idea anyone drank it in significant quantities! My grandmother would give us a sherry glass of it very very occasionally. I really had no idea anyone would want to use it to either get drunk, abuse caffeine or cause type 2 diabetes (it really is too sweet to bear more than a small glass).
