I drink Buckfast regularly and do not get violent at all, I'm the complete opposite, I love everyone around me!! The violent tendencies are not in the drink, there in the person that drinks it.

I went to study abroad in Europe and I bought a bottle of Buckfast because a French hobo told me to try it and all my friends hated it but i loved it! gave me a buzz i never felt from other wines before

Same drink blaming like with the alcopops in the early 2000s, Smirnov Ice and Bacardi Breezer, very popular with young folk as you couldn't taste the alcohol. Was quickly singled out for problems with underage drinking and Germany an extra tax was put on those drinks, leading to a drop in sales down to about 1/3. However, in neighboring countries it dropped at the same rate without taxation being introduced yet. So it was like all shit (sour apple schnaps in the mid 90s for example) just because the fad was over. They moved on to different drinks. Would we the same with buckfast. I drank it once at a party, it sucks anyway. But if you get rid of it, people will drink something else, but still drink just as much. Lowering the alcohol content of White Lightning and then taking it off the market didn't change drinking habits either. Good question about the caffeine content though, but people drink bacardi coke or vodka red bull too where they get a lot of caffeine in too over the course of a night.

The fact that documentaries and narratives like this exist fuels the "hard man" culture that drinks in this way, if we stopped talking about it I can't imagine it would do any harm.

I have been drinking buckfast for 15 years. I have no criminal record, no history of violence and no intention of head butting a pensioner. Why blame a certain drink for all the problems in drinking society? That's like saying its down to mc Donald's for people being fat. I just worked out I spend over £1300 per year on Buckfast. One sure thing, the government gets a really nice big slice of that.

My buddy went back home to Ireland and brought Buckfast back with him. I drank half a bottle and felt like shit. It's like prison hooch. I didn't commit any crimes or felt violent at all. I was just ill feeling.

I was pleased to find that my local off licence has started selling Buckfast, I've wanted to try it for ages but it's £7.19 a bottle! Benefits are clearly too high

I have drank buckfast since i was 13.. i'm now 41 and for politicians to say that it causes violence and crime is totally nuts....... its the mentality of the person,not the drink they drink,i have never been agreesive on buckfast..Vodka !!! yes,but does that get a bad right up???? NO!!!!

@jbird1000123 It's a different drink with different ingredients. There is limits in the UK as to the amount of caeffine you can have in an alcoholic drink in UK (green bottle) and no limit in Ireland (brown bottle). Can't explain difference in alcohol content but thats why difference in taste. Also i believe the irish bottle is 10-5ml smaller

@jbird1000123 they banned the 15% bottles a few years ago and started selling 14.8% ones, they're also slightly smaller (70cl) and have about double the caffeine

I think they banned caffeine in alc in Canada. I used to buy rockstar vodka, 158mg caf in an 8% mixed drink. Now they come without caffeine and I don't buy them now.

Sadly the days of cheap Buckfast in this country is gone! The cheapest I've seen it in my vicinity is 10.50 euro :( .Lovely drink,but as with everything if not drank in moderation it undoubtedly will lead to problems.

They only sell it in alternative bars here in Dublin, Fibbers (Metal/Rock bar) Bernard Shaws (Funk/Soul/Hip-Hop/Whatever) and Twisted Pepper (Techno/Rock/Disco/House/Electronica/Whatnot) so it hasn't really got to scangers. I don't even see winos drinking it. I was surprised when I seen it in Scotland as the rep it has there. There's a great episode of Rab C. Nesbitt where they go to the Buckfast Abbey (heaven)

its drink in total tht causes violance when your looking for it. buckfast is getting the blame because its the only one most people drink, if it was vodka or heck blossom hill it would just be the exact same thing. When your angry and your drunk it dosent matter what you drink the alcohol just makes it worse.

Buckfast is 14.8% in Ireland, if wine is 15% or over in Ireland it counts legally as port and thus is subject to higher tax/import duty. Also, yes you'll be rat arsed after three bottles of any wine, but 3 bottles of Bucky is the equivalent amount of caffeine as 24 cans of coke. 24. If you think it's ok (even in terms of your own health, not to mention crime) to drink that much caffeine then you're fucking kidding yourself.

A bottle of bucky and you'll see God LOL. Buckfast is booze BUT...it's like using red bull as a mixer. The caffeine and sugar in the Bucky is like a supercharger for the grog in it. It gets in quick and makes for a very alert, very stimulated pissed, agro idiot.

drugs effect everyone differently. caffeine is a drug and alcohol is a drug. there used to be some funky ingredients listed on the bottle too. I used to drink it but I turned into an arsehole on it so the question is... is the person or the drink? I think its both when mixed. buckfast can give you an awesome high or bad energy. for me it was almost always bad energy.
