I just brought a 5 pound bag 'o buckwheat. I'm a NY/ NC gal living in South Central Los Angeles, and the soil is so non-fertile. I'm using buckwheat for crop cover, ground cover, bare spots, and eating! Thanks for your video. I would love to live out there in the country!😍🦋💖

Thank you for the suggestion in the future. Since we haven't moved yet, we went ahead and planted 6 tomato plants and a pepper plant. Got fruit coming, so we're happy. Also, adopted a garden from a friend who broke his leg. Now we've got 9 potato plants, 2 1/2 rows of sweet corn and 37, that's right...37 tomato plants. I'm gonna be making lots of salsa and sauce, YUMMY! Can't wait. Congrats on your successes.

Had a cat named Buclwheat. 😊 And a dog named Spanky. I planted buckwheat and rye grass at the end of winter to help out a new garden area. Put down cardboard and wood chips. Its May 4th and I can't believe the rye grass is growing awsome. Cool nights in Florida.

I tell you what - 1, I love your videos. 2, if planting a diverse garden; it can be good to know the watering needs of different plants so you can grow them together. I live in North Florida, as in real North Florida - the North Florida Alabama didn't want 😁 bout the only thing that will grow here is cover crops. Cow peas do well enough. Found this video because I am going to broadcast some buckwheat now.

Here in central Texas, I also learned to plant summer crops. Especially in the raised beds. Planting buckwheat one summer and crimson clover the next summer is really improving the soil in my raised beds. Lived in this part of Texas over 24 years now and have never had to worry about ground being too wet. Never . . . sigh. Now when we lived in east Texas, oh yeah! My fall and winter crops are always better than spring. I do love the cherry tomatoes though.

Hello! I chop and drop my buckwheat all summer and let it spread all over...then collect the seed in winter for cooking. Buckwheat IS awesome! Then it pops up again next summer (zone 6)) I just let it grow willy-nilly. Have you ever grown Perpetual Spinach? It grows great even in heat and has the texture and an even better taste than Malabar Spinach. Happy gardening! :))

I just love your garden, it's beautiful! I just moved to Vidalia, GA and I just can't wait to start gardening my fall crop as soon as this heat of a 98* and that's not including the humidity factor gets better! It's just too hot! There are also too many weeds, and it's only me doing everything here which is a bummer, if I had more people helping out it would things so much better! God bless your family and home! Buckwheat, about the only thing I knew about this grain was that li'l black kid in the li'l rascals T.V. series, but once I tried the cereal, cooked like cream of wheat it makes a yummy cereal or yummy grits, but I sure didn't know it was an AWESOME cover crop, living in a semi-arid local, I'm sure buckwheat would do good, of course I reckon it needs plenty water, well summers here are hot and rainy, probably wouldn't do as good during the winter hot and dry during the day and chilly at night. Thumbs up Jason, thanks for providing the info and the link to buy buckwheat seed. :)

great idea I have been wanting to plant some buckwheat. I just moved to this property three months ago and I desperately need some soil Improvement. my garden is not doing very well yet because it was very low lying and wet so it got planted late for one thing and is nutrient and organic matter deficient. I agree buckwheat is just what I need right now and here in Michigan this is about the only time I can grow it

If buckwheat is planted early and goes to seed, will those seeds fall on the ground and germinate in the same year (fall)?

Tomatoes consumed by fungus, wilts, etc. Almost a total loss! Squash drowned.......3 different times! Thank goodness for the legumes! I've been covered up with green beans and peas (top pick purple hulls and black eyes) and limas doing ok. Had a good load of potatoes although the rain spooked me and I dug them a little sooner than I should have. Did NOT want them to be rotten when I did dig! Still getting lots of peas and beans off of succession plantings. Sweet potatoes doing well. Putting in the fall stuff now.......keep up the good work! Let me know if you want some of those top pick purple hull seed peas, I can spare some!

we like bronco for our bush beans. they do really well. we had to quit growing them though because the deer would eat them all.

Garden is just about done here in southeast Texas for us. Gourds and peppers are still going strong though. Have a row of pinkeye & creamers but the deer found them. I had extra pinkeye seeds one year and threw them out in the summer for a cover crop. I don't know if you can count that as a cover crop but it's all I had at the time.

You mentioned poison ivy so I assume you have it there. We have a lot up here in Ontario Canada and it’s hard to get rid of without using poisons. I thought maybe if I sow buckwheat on top of the p.i. Maybe the buckwheat would grow larger than the p.i. and deny it sun. Any thoughts?

My no till garden has tomatoes up the yang. The layered mulch keeps the rain from splashing. The best tomatoes are the ones I put on the cow panel and removed all the bottom leaves. The Cherokee purple. Have some others I let just spread and tried to put old hay under to keep the tomatoes off the ground. The yellow cherry tomatoes are trying to take over the world, even with cutting them back. Cucumbers doing great, except one type. They have blight, but produced great before it hit them. Egg plant has been nuts, only have 3 plants and had to pull one out to reduce the harvest. Purple sweet potatoes trying to take over the garden too. Had to cut some of them back, will see what they produce later. Carrots harvested, lemon grass about 4 foot tall. Have not grown a cover crop yet but ruminating on it. I am expanding my garden with silage tarps to kill weeds and adding goat poo by the loads and bush hogged the grass, raked and have added that to the garden. Want to experiment with growing greens and salad mix this winter. Love my salads and had some great one's last winter. Our heat makes them bitter come May. I even tried a row cover with shade cloth to see if it would work. BITTER. So greens and salad out until probably September, seeded indoors to get the little brats to germinate.... I'm in north central Texas. I've had a time getting buckwheat to germinate. But i've never sown it this time year. maybe I'll try it again. Peppers doing good, cucumbers doing good. Squash and tomatoes slowing down and just about done. eggplant doing good, green beans did well. Waiting on watermelon and cantaloupe (might have a failure there). Bad fig and blackberry year for me. Should have some good persimmons (my favorite). Not getting many pomegranate blooms this year. I'm going to try those mexican gherkins next year. Thanks for another good video!

You may know this already but give your tomatoes Epsom salts and crush up your egg shells. They can take A LOT of water so to me it looks like they are missing something like that. Hope this helps ;)

Thanks Fourmile Farm !!! I actually thought about Epsom salt, but The water is pretty bad, they are almost floating. I pulled a bad one up this week and the roots and the soil around the roots were dripping with water. Never seen this much rain in one summer... crazy! Thanks again for the suggestion, I really do appreciate & honestly at this point, the epsom salt dang sure wouldn't hurt, that's for sure!! Thanks Jason

this is a terrible year for me!. My lettuce is ok but everything else will not grow. so many weeds this year. I have a 7 yr old raised bed. I planted some buckwheat and i dont even think thats growing, although I don't know what it looks like as a young leaf. Confused about what to do. I try to keep an organic garden. In the fall should I just mow everything down and leave it til spring? I live in illinois. Very wet too here.

So sorry to hear Judy! I battle with weeds all the time! I tell you what I would do, is go by or call your local county extension office, & they should offer a soil testing kit, & it should give you instructions on what to do & how to send it off. In no time they will send you the results back & give you recommendations as to what your soil is lacking & what you can do, & here in Alabama it is not expensive at all, like less than $20. As for buckwheat, it is super fast, so you'll know within 7-10 days if it's buckwheat. As for fall, I would look for a fall cover crop. In our area we use an annual ryegrass or even kale works great & chop & drop it come spring....good luck, & I hope this was helpful!-Thx, Jason

if we planted a summer cover crop we would have no garden, if we planted a fall crop they would be frozen in the ground and under 2 feet of snow before they sprout, we plant rye grass in late fall just before freeze up as a cover crop an it comes up early spring before it is warm enough to plant, by the time the ground is warm enough to plant the annual rye is a foot high, till it in an good to go, oh our stuff in the garden will not be ready until late Aug.

Raised beds need a way to drain when there is too much water/rain... The Boards that outline the bed should have gapes where they come together so the water will drain off!!!!!!!! So going left to right when two boards line up on the same level half inch gape... The board on top of the gape should stretch across the gape holding the bed together... The Raised bed has to be flexible as you want to control the environment and the loam is part of the cycle of life of a raised garden/ garden but here you get to control all aspects of the environment... moister is also one component of the cycle of life in the raised garden you get to control!!!!!!!! You failed your garden, not the weather as you are the farmer!!!!!!!!!!! Build in a drain system so the water runs off the direction you want, level or not level ground you control the open field, and you can collect the water or let run on down the line!!!!!!

Dude, 'Im thinking that mulching with pine needles may be putting too much acidity into the soil and effecting your tomatoes. I had a simular problem and then started mulching with hay an did much better.

Actually the pine needle & acidity thing has now been proven not to be true...I use to never mulch my garden with pine straw bc I always had heard that, but here is an article that explains why it is indeed a garden myth: davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2702/#b Now good hay or straw might be a better mulch than pine needles, but typically our tomatoes do very well, but this is by far the rainiest & wettest summer that I can ever remember. We have had a period of going on 4 or 5 weeks where it has rained least once every day. It has been crazy here...but thank you for suggesting that!! I really do appreciate it a lot!!-Jason
