Bud Shank & Clare Fischer 'Misty' on Frankly Jazz

Frankly Jazz was a half-hour television program produced in Los Angeles in the early 1960s. Each program featured one or more prominent West Coast Jazz performer of the day. Frankly Jazz was hosted by Frank Evans, a leading jazz disk jockey of the day. Bud Shank plays 'Misty' on this episode.

this takes me back about 50 years to L.A. when i used to see Bud Shank in saloons performing. How neat that was. I think it was the Haig on wilshire Blvd.

A superb group led by the incomparable Bud Shank! Fischer is splendid on the piano extending the melody line with great skill! Timeless presentation by the masters of jazz.

Clare Fischer and Bud Shank! Amazing! They were both influenced by the Konitz / Tristano school (and what great musician wasn't?), but Clare's solo on this is so wonderfully chromatic! And the ways that he played with resolutions of the improvised lines within the changes...wow! And that is just one aspect of his genius. His solo ballads defy musical logic, but are profound in their beauty.

This is the greatest! I remember Bud Shank from his 1983 North Texas State University Master class for all of us Jazz saxophone majors. He was burning then, and on this clip he takes it to another world. Who would have thought about doing Misty as a Jazz Samba, totally cool school! You dig? Jazz Samba misty

You all might enjoy this track. I can still remember exactly where I was standing more than 60 years ago when my friend said, "John, you really have to hear this." He was right. Bud Shank ....Great Sax. It really pisses me when they call the sax player Clarence (something..? that just died and played with Bruce Springsteen a ..." genius " >????? If he's a genius than what is Bud Shank >? Oh well what more can we expect from the masses..?
