Responding to a debate between Sam Harris and Deepak Chopra which appeared to be lacking in science and philosophy and resembled more the arguments had every day between ordinary people. Ajahn Brahm criticises intellectual materialism for lacking heart nor a sense of humour. The purpose of both religion and science should not be defending doctrines and books, but developing a deeper understanding of life and respect for one another. As Ajahn Brahm states,"We mistake the ideas for the truth. We mistake the theories for the underlying emotional freedom which those theories are supposed to be pointing. The sign posts are not the destination."

I've listened to Ajahn Brahm off an on through the years on youtube, what a wonderful person. If I meet Ajahn Brahm one day I'd give him a big hug and say thank you so much for being a giving, caring, and compassionate voice that gives direction to healing for me and countless other's around the world who have never met him -- much love to him and all the kind people at the Temple he teaches from..Buddhism in Australia is amazing! Sending much love from California ..Bless!

As always, I stumbled upon Ajahn Brahm's talks at perfect situations. Lately, I have been conducting sessions at my office on team building. I have been practising Buddhist for quite a time now and always during the end of the sessions I have to let to a conclusion that they team can take back from the session. This let to share my Buddhist ideas where I often tell them about understanding the other person as a whole being and not judging them for their actions there is more to that person and his/her life is as complex as yours. But I started to forget it myself and try to make a point to the people who thinks the other way. I forget the basic, "to be kind" to be them and let them be. I was all in for the realm of Intelectual Materialism, where I assumed they don't understand Buddhism and/or simply ignorant. I now realise that it's not important to be right and it's okay if the other person is not always agreeing with your points. This talk has helped me so much as it has again stimulated kindness and compassion in me and be at peace with people who don't agree with me. I am so thankful to Ajahn Brahm.

I watched the debate on ABC that AB was referring to and I could see that all involved seem to have good intentions but as AB says they all want to be right. Extremely fascinating ideas but a complete waste of time as human beings only want to believe what they WANT to believe. Anyway love this talk as all talks of AB. 🙏🏼

Funny that Sam Harris follows Buddhist teachings. Granted he is a neuroscientist. So, I think it is stimulating for him to have arguments, especially atheist/theist debates. He can be funny in certain settings. But I get what you are saying, Ajahn Brahm. It would be nice to see more humor in these debates. I didn't see that particular talk, but I can imagine it was quite serious. Who knows! Maybe he will start to be lighter as he grows in Buddhism! Will be interesting to watch. 5 years from now, it could be quite different.

I understand the sentiment of this talk but watching Sam Harris in that debate is actually a huge part of what led me to Buddhism. I assumed all notions of spirituality were a bunch of nonsense and everyone in those circles was basically like Deepak Chopra. Watching Sam Harris criticize New Age thinking while defending the baby in the bath water of spiritual teachings actually led me to Buddhism. I don’t think debating is bad philosophy or bad spirituality. The debate serves to change the minds of the audience. There is a place in the world for debate, in my opinion. We don’t have to be right all the time about everything but we also shouldn’t let spirituality turn us into dummies who can’t have the hard conversations worth having about what needs changing in the world.
