Grandfather passed in 2015 at 95 and he was all over the internet - A Facebook account, a Linkedin, then again he worked two jobs all his life... no exaggeration. Had 2 PhD's. Worked out at the YMCA since 1933, and still used free weights until his final months. Then he would just go to get a steam. There were a lot of people in that generation who were real go-getters. Which is why they enjoyed a high quality of life well into their senior years.

He's a class act in that he does not steal material from others. When he uses another comedian's material, he always gave the proper credit. He used his access to shows like Carson to promote other comedians. Utter class.

Buddy was a beautiful soul, I grew up in Vegas and my grampa was a showroom captain, pit boss and other things during his time there, we had all kinds of Vegas stars over for dinners all the time, i was especially happy when Buddy came over, just a sweet human being.

Ok, you are going on my "hate" list. The last guy I put on that list saw the 4 Seasons and the 4 Tops at the same concert. It's nothing personal ...it just a rule I have when people get to see what most of us never will. I may have to put you on the top of the list.... trust me, that's a huge compliment lol :o)

Agreed! A very funny man -- one of my favorites! The unexpected left turn in the last joke was priceless! Set up to go right, and hit from behind by the punchline. Hysterical! And Buddy Hackett's delivery of the jokes was superb!

I have the very same memories growing up. If I was still awake, always hearing The Tonight Show theme music and my parents laughing at Johnny and his guests. I loved Friday nights when I could stay up late and watch along with them.

This is the best. Johnny knew how to let the guest shine he didn't compete with them he played the straight man for them . Today's hosts don't listen, they are always waiting to ask the next question and they want to get all the laughs. If they just watched this show they they would learn how to host.

Everything today has to come out with just how far we can be shocked - no substance at all. I have a bad mouth & swear like a sailor because I was one but there is no storline, there are no comedic story teller's left anymore & none that want be......It's a shame because today's programs are garbage.....

I'm 73 and miss all of these bygone talent. Nowadays only maybe 2 or 3 comedians are actually funny. I am glad to have lived and grown up to see Buddy and shecky green in person and good god were they funny

Years ago I was in the Carson audience when Hackett was a quest. During the commercials he would get up and tell blue jokes to the crowd. When the network came back the roar of laughter was quite noticeable and if you had been watching on TV you would have wondered why everyone was cracking up. RIP Buddy

Johnny was and will always be the best of all time. Buddy is a national treasure and watching the two work together is a treat. I'm old enough to remember watch Carson with my grandparents and I'm only 38, I'm so glad I have those memories. Grandpa passed in 2015. He was a ww2 vet who fought in the pacific theater and was an absolutely amazing human being and grandfather to me and 5 other cousins. My incredible grandma is 87 now and I still love watching shows and especially hearing stories from yesteryear from her. We talk every week. I'm sad that at some point in time I will lose her and that connection from the past will be lost.

Our family knew Hacketts family. His daughter to be exact pretty cool. They had all kinds of memorabilia. Johnny Carson autographed pictures pictures of Buddy and all the greats. Autographs the whole nine.

Forgot how wonderful Hackett is ... jokes that have no cursing and vulgarity and make one bust out laughing. Johnny Carson was a wonderful host, but also a very find comic. I was fortunate enough to see him at a special costume party (Television Academy of Arts and Sciences) in his honor and he got up and entertained us ... he had dark hair then, but then, again, so did I. Grateful for the comics of the world ... laughter is so good for the entire body, not to not forget the soul ...

Don't think you ever saw Buddy Hackett live then. Depending on the venue, his material could be clean, or could also be the complete opposite. Something I have never been able to understand though, what makes it 'dirty'? Who was the guy that first said 'don't say that word, I find it offensive' and people actually listened to him. This had to come from ONE person originally. Why do other languages also have their own word that translates to english? Shouldn't that tell you something?

You don't have to be caustic and I did not intend to sound uppity in any way. It just was a rare and wonderful experience that I felt like sharing. Sharing an old and happy memory, when Johnny Carson (and the rest of us from that time) still had dark hair and in our youth. A lot of people knew Mr. Carson on his Tonight Show and knew he was funny, however, he did a complete routine at that time and was hysterically funny and great.

Johnny really had this job perfected. He knew when to be funny himself and even more importantly knew when to sit back and let the guest perform. You would really see the difference when a guest was not working out and Johnny would turn it on. No need to do that with Buddy Hackett though.

His brother was an ophthalmologist on Long Island near where my sister's husband, Fred, had a stationary store. So one day, Buddy Hackett walks into the store and Fred says, are you Buddy Hackett? Hackett says, "A lotta people accuse me of that."

Buddy Hackett and Johnny Carson were both investors in the DeLorean Sports Car and showed up together at it's premier showing at The Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles in the early 1980's. I was hired to contract all of the musicians for that show and was delighted to see them arrive through the rear entrance together. Too bad the Delorean failed to take off and was mired in controversy with criminal charges of drugs being connected to DeLorean. Nonetheless, a good time was had by all..

The DeLorean was such a beautiful machine. It just a shame. Out of all the peoples that were dealing cocaine, they grab the one guy who wasn't even using it and was trying to save his dream. Then his beautiful wife just dumps him. I wonder what happened to him.

Incredible talent, and this isn't even when he's doing the blue routines he's most famous for. And look at Carson laying back, letting Hackett go to work, and not feeling the need to outdo him. No combos like this nowadays.

Johnny never had to upstage his guests. He let Buddy do his thing. Rickles too. He understood that if they did well it was good for the show.

Yeah, most talk show hosts don't understand that, that at least during the interviews, it's *_not_* all about them. They insist on interrupting their guests to make some lame joke and it ruins the flow and often derails the conversation.

I had spent weeks working up a re-roof bid for the pre fire Diplomat Resort on Hallandale Beach Florida I had it locked and this guy killed my deal. He had the penthouse and it was leaking from the pouring rain. I got there quick with a limited amount of a product that would stop it. Not enough to just spread over the entire roof. All I needed was to get in the unit to see the area where it was coming in. The maintenance manager and I knocked and his flunky said to wait in the hall, after I had explained my need to get in for just 1 minute.. After 4 hours in the hall, he called the general manager and complained we were bothering him and that the roof was still leaking. A real sweetheart, this guy.

Truly amazing how many kinds of humor there are, and so many styles in delivery. Buddy had an almost childlike innocence about him, that he used to maximum effect in his stories. No one else quite like him, though Robin Williams & Jonathan Winters come close.

For anyone who doesn't get the first joke, "Wenn" means "if" in German and Yiddish. So worded in straight English, the punchline would be, "oh, the big twin maker. If I had to depend on him, I wouldn't have the first three neither". Makes the joke easier to understand. Buddy Hackett tells the punchline (the whole joke actually) in a mixture of English with some Yiddish thrown in.

Buddy was such a gentle off-color (but not nasty) man. He could draw a genuine laugh out of you right at the end of something you may have thought was just part of a story. He had such a brilliant mind for wordsmithing and timing.

I saw Buddy in Vegas at The Sarah in 1976 or maybe '77 when I was a young Marine...he had the audience roaring and even as a young Marine he told some jokes that had me Almost blushing...his material was extremely dirty, but funny as could be....best live show I've ever seen.

I made the mistake of drinking water right before the sumo punchline about the rope up the butt and you'd fight anyone. Spit water all over myself and my laptop.

One of the great ones from days gone bye. One of my favorite Buddy Hackett jokes was about a carp laying in the bottom of the boat. Anybody else remember the carp joke? I won't even try to tell it here, cause it wouldn't be funny, but Buddy can tell it and made you laugh for hours. RIP Buddy

3:10 I didn't get it. Seriously. I replayed the punch line several times, and I'm pretty sure I'm hearing exactly his words: "Look on him, that big twin maker! When I'll have to depend on him, I wouldn't have the first three neither!" and everyone bursts into laughter and applause.

It's because it's Yiddish. "Wenn" means "if" in German and Yiddish. So "if I had to depend on him, I wouldn't have the first three neither". Makes the joke easier to understand.

@@crieverytim So am I frankly. The joke is just that the father, wasn't the actual father of the kids. The wife had been screwing around on him, and that's how the kids were born. Not to the father.
