There is absolutely no room for error on that snare drum! That thing is tight, and those snares are taunt! Be like a guitar player playing straight out of an amp with no distortion, pedals, etc.that snare is as clean as you can make it. Buddy's hands were so well matched, you can't tell if he was a true righty or lefty. Scary GOOD!!

Most comments about Buddy are in regard to his speed, which few can match, but he is also a master of rudiments and rhythmic patterns around the set, especially in this solo. I have not seen any drummer put together rhythmic combinations quite like buddy, and that is what keeps his solos so interesting, never boring.

I've seen many, many of his solos , seen him plenty of times live .... and this might be the best solo I've seen of his ... IF there is one best of his. That snare drum was tuned and miked to allow every stroke to be heard clearly and like was mentioned, allowed no room at all for mistakes. Who else could have pulled this solo off , going that long and to perfection but Buddy Rich ? First time I saw him live was 1968 ... and here it is 2023 and he still leaves me numb and speechless watching him play on video 55 years later !

Buddy, unlike others before and after him, saw things other drummer did not see. He saw “a cymbal” as a huge instrument within itself. It had tiny keys all over it, with their own unique sound. Same for each drum and rim. His hands and technical skills were without equal, but I think his greatest talent was his ability to play the zones of everything in front of him. Kinda neat in this solo, too, is how Buddy introduces several items from his "usual bag of tricks" -- the decelerations and accelerations, the delicate inside-the-drum-rim stuff, the swinging press roll, etc -- but changes them up in creative ways, almost like a spontaneous experiment in breaking his own habits. When you think that most drummers would sell their souls to play a tenth of these things his usual way, it's all the more humbling to see him breaking them up like cliches he's tired of hearing. This man was way, way above it.

Every time I watch one of his gigs, I get tired all over... I've been playing drums for well over 50 years and grew up watching him. Less than a year after I started playing, I knew I had less than a zero chance of even getting close to that. Now, I know it's not about trying to match him, it's just about doing what you do as best as you can personally do it. I'm 64 and I still practice 2 hours every day (though it's on an e-kit so the neighbors stay 'neighborly). My hands don't work like they did when I was 30 but I think I'm better overall than I was back then. Still, after I watch one of his solos, I need to wait a few hours before I even think about picking up a pair of sticks. Rich

My father too. Was a huge fan of Buddy's. And thank goodness my father bugged me to broaden my horizons, from listening to only rock, and start paying attention to Buddy Rich and jazz!

Not too many drummers can make a drum solo mystifying. Thanks Buddy, for carrying the torch for us & for the inspiration.

I had the extreme pleasure of seeing Mr. Rich twice live at Disneyland in LA, sitting on the floor not 25 feet away! Extraordinary! But this is truly breathtaking! And kudos to the camera work. At one point you can even see the sweat dripping from Buddy’s nose. I’m not a drummer, so I can only imagine the endurance, strength and concentration necessary to accomplish something like this performance! Hell, who needs an orchestra? Ultimately all I can say is a heartfelt HOLY SHIT, and thank God for video!

Talent, motivation, rhythm, creativity, sense of timing.....Buddy had all of these and knew how to put them all together. That's why I consider him as being the all-time greatest drummer who ever lived. I have been drumming off and on for 70 years.

Add in the concentration and outright PHYSICAL skill, plus the muscle memory developed over his lifetime, and......well....you just heard the results.

This is by far the most expressive Buddy Rich solo ive ever seen. And seen and heard a truck load. Conceptually he is incredibly advanced and his approach to melody is uncanny. He plays and develops themes in his solo as dramatic as occurs in the music. In this case , the poly rhythmic West Side Story. This is an open solo and if one sings what Buddy plays theyll realize the depth of Buddy's conception and supremely musical prowess. I do think that the listener can be completely absorbed listening to this. I know 'Iam . I also know that people forget as in latin music . The drums are also featured as other soloists are. In the singer song writer or trubadour tradtion from from folk to pop , this type of approach, from a once American popular music, strikes as different as sweet from sour. Since in those cases the drums are strictly accompaniment . Jazz the truth is a uniquely American art form and the drumset . Created here in this country. Lets listen and be swept away by the great plot lines and master work as grand as any other classical music. For me and for millions of fans worldwide over his 50 yr pro history across generation , Buddy's statements are only sweet .

My pleasure. And I could't agree more about the incredible experience of seeing him live and up close. Jaw-dropping. Completely overwhelming. At times almost hard to believe that what I was witnessing was real!

Never seen this solo before... i have been watching a lot of drummers lately and thinking "wow" that was brilliant or the best, but this puts it all back in perspective, there are amazing , absolutely brilliant drummers and then there is Buddy Rich, the GOAT!!
@cloudview7473 жыл бұрын
This is EXACTLY how I feel! There are many amazing, absolutely brilliant drummers, and I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate them. But then there's Buddy Rich. One Of A Kind!

3:06 - Jesus Christ! He's playing those lightning speed triplets WITH ONE HAND! I give up!
@AlainHubert4 жыл бұрын
Not quite. If you look carefully, he was actually playing 2/3 of those triplets with his left hand. But still a very impressive solo by the absolute master.
I think he is the greatest that’s ever lived. There are so many great drummers. I just think that he has so many techniques he employs and he makes the drums sing. It like intense improvisation. No other drummer is on this level imho.

If you are not 3 years' old at this time the fantasy will more than likely not be a reality. Buddy was Baby Traps. It was his FIRST language.

Amazing..Astounding ...back in 1973 I sat 6 feet away from him, front row at the Sydney jazz club. The most jaw dropping experience of my drumming life, the set lasted an hour or so, He was fill on , sweating and growling. I feel incredibly privlaged , I was 20yrs old. I'm still mesmerized!
@cloudview7473 жыл бұрын
Your experience sounds virtually identical to what happened to me in early 1978. I saw him at small club in Evanston IL, sat to Buddy's right, in the front row, so had an unimpeded view of both hands & both feet. I was 10 feet away from him. Just like you say, it was the most jaw dropping experience of my drumming life. Among other things, Buddy was in a mood that night to utilize his left hand drum roll capability. He used it extensively. Not only was it impossibly fast, even more importantly it was impossibly smooth. Musically perfect. I was so mesmerized, I kid you not, on the 45 minute drive home I could barely speak to my girlfriend. It actually scared her at first because I was driving and she thought something was really wrong with me!

I seriously doubt if he could ever play the exact same solo twice in in a row. Only thing he could ever play was rudiments fast and loud. Nothing memorable at all

Always learn so much watching Buddy the master play. However, Philly Joe Jones is one of my favorites when it comes to solos and snare technique. Wish there were more videos of him on KZfaq.
