Budget AMC 360 Build: Part 1 Short Block

In this episode, I put together the short block of my AMC 360 for the Big Chief, my 1979 Jeep Cherokee. I removed the ridge at the top of the cylinders with a ridge reamer. Then honed the cylinders with a dingle ball hone. Then I hand polished the crank. After that, I installed a summit 8600 camshaft, the freshly polished crank, the main bearings and measured the clearances using plastic gauge. Then I put in the summit racing timing set, oil pump, measured the pump gear clearances, and installed the water pump and harmonic balancer. After that (and recovering from the piston ring fiasco) I installed the pistons with new rings, and explain how to orient the rings in the AMC 360. Hope you enjoy! Aaaand you can use a coat hanger hook to hold up the cam while pulling it through the journals.

Over the years I've honed the block up side down. That way you're not slinging the grit all over the lifter bores and main webs.

Should double check the TDC for the timing chain- rotate the crank one full revolution and count 20 pins from 3 o'clock on the cam gear to the crank dot. Could really save some headaches

I can't believe you were brave enough to do this engine rebuild. I've been to rebuild shops and they can do that in a hour and a half. Amazing. My 390 AMX was REBUILT by a master engine builder before storing or 25 years. Runs awesome. I love vice grip garage too. He's a blast. Keep up the good work. Neal

i'm getting close to firing up my AMC 360 rebuild, it helps to know things may not work out, so I'm prepared for that, wouldn't be the first time, the large circlip I had left over from trying to rebuild the torqueflite 727 is a little concerning too, but its the journey as they say, love the videos, very inspiring, I've watched them over and over

You should have left the housing loose then put the harmonic dampener on to align the seal then tighten the bolts for the housing

sanding the crank does not take care of it being out of round, you can check cylinder taper using a ring pushed down by a piston and a feeler gauge to check it at the top and bottom of the bore, you will be lucky to have it run for anything length of time in my opinion

HOWdy DOP&V, ... I disagree on the PISTONS going back into the SAME "hole" & SAME "orientation" ... I routinely took 343ci 4-bbl flat-top AMC V-8 Pistons & placed them into my 360ci AMC V-8 engines & Turned them 180 degrees around ( per SMOKEY YUNICK ) ... So pistons 1-3-5-7 went into holes 2-4-6-8 because the Piston Wrist-Pins are slightly offset - this holds each piston at TDC a moment longer building power & also with the difference in DECK HEIGHT yielded about 11:1 Compression Ratio with stock parts ... IMHO ... COOP ...

Yes, I agree you do get more power by flipping the Pistons around, but for that gain, you lose longevity because it wears the thrust side of the piston and cylinder wall more. The factory offset the Piston pin in order to reduce the wear.

FYI I think the cross hatch pattern from honing your cylinders is way too shallow. It looked like your drill speed was too high and your back and forth motion too slow. I normally turn my slowest drill down as much as possible, then work it back and forth as fast as possible. Just trying to get that 45° angle. I'm not exactly sure of the reason for it, but I think it has to do with the Rings rotating in their grooves especially during break-in.

PS......DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND PUT IN A NEW DIP STICK TUBE NOW. They are a pain to do after. And don't use ethanol gas, it goes bad in 6 months and kills your fuel pump and carborator. Trust me I know. Neal.
