This Yamaha FJR1300 Review is based around a 2004 model I rode and it's currently for sale at Budget Bikes, based in Swindon UK. This is my first ride of any Yamaha FJR 1300 and I've got to tell you, I was impressed.
This is a very capable sports touring motorcycle, some may even say it was the ultimate sports touring motorcycle - what do you think?

I bought 5 years ago new out of the showroom, the ES model. It was such a nice machine to ride. Zero problems, easy to work on, cheap parts, very comfortable even for tall riders. Smooth like butter, easy shifting, just overall great buy. I do not have room for 2 bikes that is why I sold it and bought a new GW DCT Tour. You can't go wrong with the FJR....period. Reminds me my very old CBR1100 XX.

I’m thinking of buying a GW for the first time but also considering going back to an FJR. Is there much difference between the two not taking into account the gearbox?

@@jaysimpson6857 One is Escalade (GW) and FJR is Subaru WRX 😄😄😄. Depends on your day to day riding, you will go no wrong with either one. The GW is the king of long rides. Like no other bike on this planet. End of story.

Great review however the 1st gen weighed in at 237KG dry as later models had abs which increased the weight. 3rd gear as you correctly mentioned is a peach in the twisties, in 2016 KBR took over the suspension and the springs are a lot thicker, Gen 1 and 2 suffered weak rear shocks. There is a mod on gen 1 and 2 shocks where you can add a washer spacer to the spring to stiffen it up, alongside shorter dog bones which raise the rear end totally transform this bike into a 600cc feel handling wise. The 1st Gen is easier to fettle with on the rear due to no ABS unit by the rear shock, servicing this bike is a peach and so easy including plugs (once i removed the Pair valve and Plumbing) air filter, oil and filter even synching the throttle bodies whilst doing the plugs. All in all ive had over 130 bikes looking for that magical combination of comfort, speed braking etc and this one has finally stopped me from looking at anything else! 145HP catapults you redlining into another dimension, the Famous R1 blue spot calipers combined with EBC HH pads are winners, periodicaly flush the brake and clutch fluids for best performance. As mentioned, check the rear suspension linkeage as these items can be overlooked and it has been reported that the linkeage can seize and break if not addressed. the final drive oil is so easy to check and replace also. To sum up, this bike has ruined me in regards to anything else out there, have had multistrada enduro, GTR1400, ZZR1400, both Hayabusas and many many more but my 02 FJR is the all round winner for me, 20 stone and 6 foot 3 and i dont hang around. Hoe this helps, Mark.

Happy with current "mainly recreational" ride....'09 CB1000R (naked) but when weather turns I do hanker for more (some) rain protection. Your testimony valued by me as you prefer this out of 130 bikes ! Have thrown my leg over one & it fitted like a glove. Also like the VFR1200F (facelift ridden) & R1200RS & ST1300 (not ridden), as used propositions....Not a fan of frequent chain maintenance & adjustment. Manual handling to acess tight/sloped (home) parking a negative factor. Also potential to have to pick up after a drop puts me off heavier bikes.. (5'9" 12.5 stone bloke in 50's Relatively fit BUT lifetime caution needed after abdominal hernia OP). Thanks for sharing your experienced thoughts 👍🏍

Awesome bike and talk about reliable...... Had an '08 that I bought new in ' 09 for $4000 off list. Great bike, put 80,000 miles on it with zero issues in 10 years. I did upgrade the front forks (adjustable preload springs + adjustable rebound/compression valving) and replaced the rear shock with an aftermarket (adjustable as above). This mod changed everything about the ride and handling for the MUCH better, didn't feel like you were riding a 640 pound FJR , I pushed it hard .... I love the twisty country and mountain roads of central and northern California. Well, now I ride a '19 KTM 1290 SD GT, it's an ANIMAL, Love it! But, I still miss the FJR.

Love these S/H bike reviews that you're doing. I don't know of any other Vlogger that's making these and, I don't really understand why. Most of the KZfaq Vloggers have made friends with 1 or more dealerships, and most, if not all, dealerships allow test rides. I know they might not want anyone who wasn't a potential buyer, riding their ' just valeted ' machines, but before that's been done, I don't see what they've got to lose, and they might find a potential buyer via the Vlogger's KZfaq channel. Keep it up Bruce, you're leading the way.

I had an 06 and loved it most of the time, pulled like a train, handled ok but got a bit wallowey in high speed sweepers. If anyone buys one make sure to check the swing arm bearings and the rear suspension link bearings as they are not in the service routine and they can seized and snap the suspension links

used to own an '06 gen2. It is fantastic on the open road and especially on the Autobahn, really 220km/h with panniers and all no sweat. My subjective issues were crapy geometry, jerky throttle, went through front tyres like nothing else... Solved that with complete Hyperpro suspension and Power commander 5 then it became a weapon. Back then at 41 i was the youngest at an FJR meat up...should tel you enough. Got the most compliments for looks though. I miss it at times, don't tel my wife ..

Hi Bruce, great review of an iconic motorcycle. I had two of these over a 12 year period, absolutely bullet proof bike (5 speed version) didn’t even have a bulb blow over the ownership period, never failed to deliver me and the missus on many European tours. Only moved away after missus didn’t want to tour with me after many years, she is a hefty piece of kit but a brilliant two up ride.

Always nice to see an FJR review. I'm on my 4th and have had it nearly 4 yrs now, to be honest I don't know what I'd change it for as it does everything I need a bike to do, it's as fast as you like, super reliable and economical too, avge over 54mpg during my ownership. Such a shame they're being discontinued but hopefully Yamaha will see fit to replace it soon. Thanks for the vid! 👍

I traded the AE in for a 1250GS-TE Exclusive eighteen months ago. Love the GS but miss the FJRs motorway crushing ability. You need to try an FJ1200 (I still have mine) as they're brilliant too.

Avebury Ring at the top end of Devizes. The stones form a circle around a village and are said to hold the same mystique as Stonehenge, Glastonbury Tor etc. a lot of 'deviners' turn up in summer using their devining rods to feel the lay lines beneath. Good vid again, nice bike too, my mates had them from the 1100 model. Would not have anything else. Yamaha used to claim the bike was the first bike purposely designed as a sports tourer.

I do enjoy looking through your back catalogue. Great review this, and just shows you don't need to have the latest bike/model to get a great bike. Also pleased to see your subs reaching the numbers you deserve. Sure it won't be long before you have 100,000. I think most people who buy a 500+cc bike do so with every intention of a 'good ride out'. Thus may I politely suggest you test how long in distance and time any bike you are testing can be ridden before numb-bum syndrome wins. This is a test that is very difficult to do on a short test ride from a dealer, yet a real let-down when, having spent potentially thousands on your dream machine you find it utterly impossible to ride for more than xxx hours. Keep up the great work.....

Recently bought a 2003 FJR with 54,000 miles. Rides great, no issues with performance. Gearbox might be a bit clunky when cold but gets better as you ride. Weight is on the heavy side but only an issue when you're wrestling with it on the ground. No weight probs when actually on the move. Comfortable riding position compared to my previous bikes. Seat is a bit high for me personally but I can live with that as it's a great machine. even this Gen 1 model I own. Get one!

I’ve had 2 FJR’s. Been all over Europe on them. They give sports bikes a bit of a fright. 144bhp. So they can get along sharpish.

Am I the only one that caught the reference to the 70’s band ‘the three degrees’? Maybe your audience is too young to remember ‘when will I see you again’. Great vid about a great older bike.

The FJR1300 is a great bike! I almost bought one but decided to get the naked Yamaha XJR1300 instead which is also a great bike!

Wiltshire is a beautiful county to ride a bike around. Having ridden the FJR and the RT quite a bit back to back I prefer the RT, comfier, better wind protection and handling. Do still love that 1300 inline 4 though.

Great review mate! Also would love a pint and a chat if closer, you're a top bloke, great outlook on life👍 Would you recommend the FJR over the GTR? Looking to move up from my zzr1400 to a shaft tourer, may get my wife on the back then ha ha!

Damn man that intro shot had me worried I initially thought you went belly up with that FJR ! Glad to see ya didnt and it was just the lonely gopro Hey ;-) Yeah for longer drives, longer commutes and even holidays great bikes i reckon. But heavy and big for sure so at this time not for me will stick to drive around the neighbourhood on my ktm 690 lol

I'll always have a soft spot for the old school Sports Tourers. Lots of great bikes disappearing now because of Euro 5. BMW R1200RS's are a bargain! (got mine last year) might be a bit small for you though Bruce.

Haha Bruce unlucky with camera bounce down the road, my ultimate addons went bouncing with new samsung and wrecked the phone. Good ole classic Yamaha luved them for years but no good for short arse riders. Always drooled over the FJR suppose my FZ8 is of same style and inline 4 engine bulletproof. Keep up the great work even with tge wee mishaps

Interesting comment re the grips. I found them to be too thin on my 2019 so added Grip Puppies. There are excellent, programmable heated grips on mine. Though the stock seat is a bit uncomfortable for touring so I've swapped mine for a Top Sellerie Gel one (bliss!) Oh, and a 6 speed box - so it's going in for it's gearbox recall in a couple of weeks! There's a Sport and Touring mode on mine. Sport mode is great, it sharpens up the throttle response, but I'll lose my licence if I use it as it's supposed to be used... I love mine

i got a 2002 - in dull met red, 86000 on the clocks and still super fun, i have lost my hooligan in me along the way ( probably a good thing ) although she will still get the heart racing in 2nd all the way to 90 in no time at all. ( i dont do that often ), cant see me getting rid any time soon. especially with my son waiting out one more year before he can convert that a2 to a full A, and the NC500 still to be done - when the damn world opens up, 3.500 for that 2002 in disguise as a 2004 seems a tad over priced to me, but i guess dealers gotta try it on.
