Episode Idea: Make a price point (similar to today). Erin buys a bottle and Josh buys a bottle. (but they don't know what the other person bought) Then, do a blind to see which one scores the highest. A fun way to learn more about the whiskeys AND have a fun competition between you two to see who's bottle wins.

OGD 114 is 19.99 at total wine here in Wisconsin. 4-5 years old and tastes how a classic bourbon should. It doesn’t have the goofy fruit super sweetness or big brown sugar like a lot of modern whiskey from the last 25 years. It tastes like high-proof, rye spice, charred oak barrel bourbon, and I think it’s perfect, especially at the price 👍🏼

I had a very similar reaction to this whiskey. It was recommended to me by a friend who owns a liquor store (but doesn’t drink bourbon). Your comment that it was just spice but not very complex was pretty much exactly what I thought about it. It has been relegated to a mixer in our cabinet.

Would love to get your thoughts on Old Tub BiB, Ezra Brooks 99, 1792 Small Batch, and Green River Kentucky Straight 90 proof. I've been on a budget hunt lately. Have you considered doing a neat vs 1 icecube vs "drop" of water comparison on the less expensive whiskys? I have seen it mentioned and done it myself. In a lot of cases, it is an improvement in enjoyment. Don't get me wrong, I prefer whisky neat, but it has expanded my taste preferences a little.
@stuffandwhiskey6 ай бұрын
We have dabbled with it a little bit, but ultimately tend to prefer things neat. It's less about whether or not the whiskey itself is better with ice in it. Just not big on cold whiskey. It's like warm soda--just not very appealing for our palates.

I like it, I even crave it sometimes but I have a hard time describing it and can't really liken it to anything. I usually describe it as "dark" - if it were a stout beer I'd call it "roasty" because I get like dark/bittersweet chocolate, dark, even burnt sugars, coffee...like the roasted barley in a stout. It's not those flavors expressly but it's in that family somewhere. And it makes sense because I love the more bitter stouts like Guinness Extra and Foreign Extra.

The $30 price point is a great one for recommendations (after the $16-22 range where I go between Evan Williams BiB and WT 101…depending)….y’all have covered most of the classics one way or another…Elijah Craig Small Batch, KC9, Four Roses Small Batch, Early Times BiB, and one I really dig…Cooper’s Craft 100. I’m not a huge 1792 guy, but there is that. Maybe Jack Daniels Bonded or Bulleit? My brother would lean towards Woodward Reserve. I need to revisit OFO 100, personally. I’ve thrown OGD114 against other high ryes in my double blind pool…like Four Roses Small Batch or an MGP 21% rye product.
