Due to recent events with COVID-19 many people are considering home gyms. I'm going to try to be putting out a few videos on budget gym builds that not only won't break the bank, but allow you to still get in some serious training.

To anyone reading this some year + later, I got the, "light commercial rack" pictured at the beginning with the safety straps. It's pretty solid, and has held up to anything I've needed it to. The strap safeties are nice, the pull up handles are sturdy, and have a variety of angles etc, and the roller pin j hooks were a solid addition for no added charge.

Thanks for the videos Brandon. I just bought a Rogue setup using the recommendations from your older videos. They’re out of lots of plates and barbells so I guess lots of people are making home gyms for the coronavirus. The Ohio power bar was sold out so I went with the standard Ohio bar w/ black zinc. Is there much of a difference between the regular and power bars? By the time I get things set up my gym will probably open anyway but I still just wanted to have it so I can workout without having to drive to the gym.

Excellent review. One question -- as far as the lat pulldown/low row attachment, doesn't that low placement of the rowing pulley make the movement kind of awkward? Seems like it becomes a half row, half upright row because you'd be pulling both back and upwards. We thought about adding one to our Titan rack, but didn't for that reason. Thanks.

Would you consider their squat racks and other equipment as equivalent in quality to Rogue Fitness? Mostly concerned with build quality--don't want a squat rack or J-hooks to collapse from a heavy barbell, or to have pieces rusting. It seems the price point is similar after you include all the add-ons, plates, and whatnot, but not sure--with stuff out of stock, price comparison is tricky. In either case, it seems all gym equipment manufacturers are having issues with keeping things in stock. Boo. :P One last question: If I am doing overhead press in addition to the standard powerlifting lifts, do you get a hybrid barbell, or is a powerlifting barbell sufficient enough?
@BasementBrandon

Nope, with budget brands there is def a trade off in quality, but unless you're comparing them side to side, the average person prob won't be able to tell.

If I recall correctly, the Rep Fitness equipment is a little less expensive. How do you think either of them compare to the Ironmaster lat tower in terms of quality? A couple of years ago I got their 4.1 rack because I'm cheap, in hindsight I should of got a step up, BUT for 99.9% of the population it's all the rack they will need. It's light but the design makes it very stable, feet go back further than j cups, wider than rack and farther forward than rack(unlike rogue). I weigh about 250, rack weighs about half that, when I do chinups the rack doesn't budge and I don't have it bolted down. Very smartly designed. I will give a warning about Bells, they constantly change their designs, so a few months after I got mine they changed the design so my rack is no longer compatble with any of their attachments. So if you get one buy attachments with it because who knows.

My build is the 5.1 light commercial rack, rogue Ohio power bar (stainless steel), a decent bench for about 100$ CAD, and close to 300lbs (about 1$ CAD/lb) of Olympic rubber trigrip plates (like the ones in regular gyms). Only issue with BoS: rack parts already came a bit scuffed. Doesn't matter since it's a power rack I guess. The jhooks (more specifically the roller ones) can come loose when benching. Can seem quite dangerous, although I'm sure I could contact them and maybe come up with a solution. Safety straps are great nonetheless. I would also like it if the entire pullup bar had neurling instead of the neutral grips. I have hyperhidrosis, so chalk doesn't do much but neurling is crucial. Problem with rogue bar: nothing. Only thing that sucks was having to pay a ton extra to ship it to Canada, alongside the crappy conversion rate.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 4 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear the set up is working for you! Def agree it's not high end, but for the price it's a good solution for many. For the cups, you can put some felt on the inside which should make them more secure (and won't scuff up your rack as much either).

I own one of these, and can pretty confidently say that it's "wobbly" with a 400+lb barbell loaded on it, but still very reliable. At the end of the day it's 14 gauge steel with roughly 2" x 2" uprights (same as the Titan T-2). If you're squatting/benching 500+, you may want to look at one of their higher end models which uses thicker gauge steel and has larger uprights.

Looks good for the budget...really wish there was westside spaced holes as I feel like I'm always in between holes on the posts. It's another $300 for the 5.1 haha!

@Kelvinjan

@@BasementBrandon yeah I understand. Just wish you could easily get different uprights for less than a $300 upgrade but I guess that's how they're making money by making you go up a model. I guess a plus with the commercial is the added accessories like pair of j cups, roller j cups, spotter straps, 4 band pegs, multi grip pull up bars.

How does this compare with Rogue equipment that’s about double the price
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 4 жыл бұрын
There's def a trade off. Rogue stuff is higher quality steel, has a higher weight rating, has better finishes (welds, paint, accessories), better warranty, and usually better customer service. However for some, that doesn't matter b/c at the end of the day it's just a power rack. So depends on which camp you fall into.

good equipment for the price.. but damm their packing is hit or miss. barbell came in a cylinder with only a layer of tape holding it in, needless to say it got scuffed. Replacement crossmember came with no protective packaging at all and a bunch of loose bolts in the box scratched everything up. Theirs an offer for dicks sporting goods for 300lbs included with the bar for $250. I recommend people get the weights their. Also I personally would buy everything Walmart online, like carpet $50, mirror $100, the cage is only $250, and $100 bench, a weight holder to hold the weights for $50, buy a $20 belt, straps, buy special rope to warm up, a couple dumbles, clippers to hold. Also theirs a deal for vinyl for $60 which adds like 50 lbs extra. It’s only gonna be a bit short of a thousand dollars at the end but you are fully setup. If I was ever gonna start a gym, this is what I pay for the money.
