This Budget photography gear shootout is a nature photo shootout for wildlife photography with a professional photographer, KZfaqr, and publisher Chelsea Northrup.
✨✨Are you on the INSIDE? Check out thephotoinsiders.com - EXCLUSIVE video content and learning community for photographers✨✨
The Northrups photography youtube channel along with her husband Tony Northrup. She's shooting with Nikon wildlife camera the Nikon D7500 along with a Tamron wildlife lens the Tamron 150-600mm F5.6 while I have the legendary Canon EOS 10D and a great Canon wildlife photography lens the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM (not quite as budget photography lens as normal but still less that the top of the line so we'll go with it - plus I borrowed it from the northrups because I didn't have anything like it so beggars can't be choosers).
This episode is literally a battle in nature with strong wind, tall grasses, and wildlife animals. Hope you enJoy!
Also can I get a high five for the WORST thumbnail I've ever made, but I like it and idc? HAHA Chelsea likes it too lol

Great video Vanessa. I like your series on it’s the photographer not the gear. But even the best run into challenges with gear. As photographers we have to self critique and get cc. I’ve been using a RP for wildlife photography including birds in flight! It’s challenging but I have taken many fantastic photos! It can be done.

That 400mm f5.6 lens has a great reputation I'd been considering getting a secondhand one. I don't plan pairing it with a 10D though (I do still have a 20 year old 20D, but it hasn't seen the light of day for a few years now).

Vanessa’s shot is interesting because with the cloud, there is kind of a natural vignetting effect with the blue sky around the edges. Key takeaways, wildlife photography is hard, and faster shutter speed never hurts. Because honestly, for a given lens I generally have no idea if it’s stabilized or not without searching the specs, which I’m unlikely to do every time I swap a lens.

Great vid, shame about the wind noise. Good tip is to put your mic on the inside of your shirt. You can use a bit of gaff tape to hold it in place. Make it a bit of a wedge so that your shirt doesn't brush up against it. We used this technique to shoot a documentary.

9:05 I have a Tamron 200-500mm, which is probably way cheaper than Chelsea's 150-600 lens (and possibly the cheapest super telephoto lens) and I have the same exact problem when shooting wide open (f/6.3) at 500mm. Pictures are soft. I experimented with different apertures, and I figured that I could get decently sharp images at f/11. Anyway, I am thrilled seeing Vanessa Joy doing bird photography.

Great job - your print exceeded my expectations and gives Chelsea and her much newer Nikon gear a real competition. I think credit is also owed to that legendary EF 400mm 5.6L glass, which still does very well especially when you add the IBIS from the R3/R5/R6. I do wish that you both shot birds in flight for comparison. Yes it is pretty long odds for the 10d, but how sweet would that victory be??

Great video! It shows only that what matters is an able photographer behind the camera - and less the megapixel count. Maybe a next idea for yet another video would be to take things even further - how about getting e.g. an original EOS 650 from 1987 (obviously a film camera) and pairing it up with a lens from that era ? Could be interesting to see...

10D and the D7500......budget in the used market today, but when new it is expensive for most consumers. Both cameras when new were in the enthusiast price range ($1200+). I guess budget for me is an entry level consumer DSLR (with no magnesium alloy weather sealed bodies) paired with a consumer level zoom. In the hands of seasoned photographers, older enthusiast model camera bodies and lens should continue to yield great results. After all back then when the gear was new, pros were able to generate wonderful images from these cameras. No reason wonderful images can't be created with these cameras in the capable hands of Vanessa and Chelsea today. I guess I kinda have a different idea of budget and missed the boat on this shootout.

Fortunately the Tamron 150-600mm G2 is a very different lens than the one Chelsea used. I frequently shoot wildlife wide open at 600mm and get fantastically sharp images. So, if one is inclined to buy a 150-600 be sure to get the newer G2 or one of the Sigmas, which are also newer designs.

D7500 as a budget camera? 😂 That's the latest, top dog consumer APS-C DSLR body from Nikon. I expected at least a D90. 😝 Vanessa kept it real, ha-ha...too real with that 10D...but impressively still managed to get tack sharp shots. Wildlife is Chelsea's thing, but Vanessa's shots IMO spoke more to me. EDIT: 3:55 Chelsea's self-roast 😭

I have to give this to Vanessa because she had the budget camera and I'm guessing 7 or 9 focus points and still got the photo sharp with no stabilization whatsoever. I think Chelsea needed some coffee to help her remember she had a soft Tamron lens @ 600mm. I don't have that problem with the Sigma 15-600mm Contemporary lens but hey apple to apples I say.

Qualifier: I am not an especially accomplished photographer. I liked Ms. Vanessa's photo for its greater texture and brightness. Ms. Chelsea's photo was nice enough but not compelling. To be clear, my photos aren't usually compelling. My criteria was which image drew my eyes in more. Subjective? Yes, quite.

Isn’t Nikon the Kia of photo gear and Canon the Rolls Royce!! 🤣🤣. All kidding aside, it does prove knowledge is greater than gear, but knowledge AND great gear makes for an easier day at the office!!

Vanessa when talking about cost of equipment eg printer you should a in U.S. dollars if it is in U.S. dollars.

@@VanessaJoy Jeremy you understand however with all the views it needs to be assumed that no all will understand., we know Vanessa is talking in U.S. , dollars however in Canada their money is also termed dollars. one of the difference is the value a Canadian Dollar is worth about %30 less than the American dollar. If the printer is $400u.s. then it would be $400+%30 more in Canadian money once the exchange is factored in, blessing
