60 over look out for the heat and good possibility of cyclinder cracks

That is one of my worries, especially after we add the AC and it lives in Arizona with 115F summers lol

Get the block soniced as 67 blocks can often go .090. Custom pistons are probably viable. Or stroke it and go .060 455 as you need a new crank anyway.

I never heard a Pontiac bored 80 over the piston wall are to thin for that big a over bore, the oil pick up looks stock but hard to tell.

Looking forward to how it works out. I’m not an engine person, but this is very interesting. Thanks for sharing.👍

0.60 over makes it a 412! The rods will work fine for your engine. You will need to get the new pistons installed on them, I would have them done at the machine shop as well because they are press fit. Hopefully you can get some news on bore size soon so you can get pistons ordered up.

Jon thank you brother for the info on the rods, any clue as to why the numbers are kinda all over the place? And great tip to have the machine shop press in them in. Thank you as always!!!

@@ArrowheadGarage no clue on the weird numbers on them. The factory rods are the same length and interchangeable between 326-455 so for Me as long as they are the same style and not building a drag race engine clean them up and run them.

.060 wont be bad i dont think for that. but yea the waiting game is not fun right now... long wait times.

I dunno whats worst of a waiting game being a teenage boy waiting for your GF baby test to show up or waiting for the shop to call you back with "its ready" lol JK

Make sure your cooling system is top notch ... early (pre-68) have tendency to run hot especially at .060 over ... contact Butler Performance they have massive knowledge on pontiac cooling system upgrades

DO NOT go with those cast rods. Pontiac engines have 2 weaknesses, the cast rods and the oiling system. Invest in a good set of Eagle rods, and ARP main studs, and a large capacity oil pan and 80 psi oil pump. Pontiac only had the cast rods, because GM wouldn't give them the money to mass produce forged rods to prevent them from becoming a premiere division like Chevrolet, to control them since they had already broken a GM rule on displacement on large engines in non large size cars.

So what became of this engine? I looked for other subsequent titles on your videos that might be talking about it and didn't see any.

It was at a machine shop for most of 2023, still waiting to get worked on.. needs to be bored out .60 over... now waiting for a second shop to have an opening.

I heard Guys back in the day would use a longer connecting rods when boring an engine to gain compression. I'm not sure about your casting marks but hopefully you have a set that's matched for your block and crank.

Thanks, I am hoping either the set I showed on the video, or the second set of 400 rods will work for this build..

So the valve reliefs on that block make it a 67 with old valve angles. It's going to be interesting to see if they can get a good bore honed. Have the rusty standard crank shot peaned and go 10/10 if possible. So if it has a small ridge after honing, ring position on the piston is critical. You want the top ring below the ridge to avoid contact and hopefully seal before reaching the low spot. If you re-condition the rods, that will help the top ring not hit the ridge. So if this block is salvaged and if it has any low spots at the ridge, I'd for sure run cast iron rings as they seat better. If it cleans up run whatever and get quench.

Hope you can obtain the part's cheaply enough, if the rod's all measure the same I don't see any reason the rod's wouldn't fit properly, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones

The numbers cast into the rods don't really matter, they're from the foundry and not really important to us. All cast steel rods '63 and newer could be divided into two categories- pre- and post-EPA. The pre-EPA rods have oil squirt holes on the big ends, post-EPA rods don't. The part numbers changed through the '60s and '70s, but the construction and materials stayed the same. Post-EPA rods appeared in '72.
