I just discovered your channel, thank you for what you do! I couldn't find a good guide on how to start and mostly what to use. I've been doing little terrariums since years now, i started by buing the glass cutter, and i was just gluing the pieces with hot glue, it was not working well to say the least haha. Then i updated to silicone, kind of like aquariums could be made, and as I was diving deeper into it, i discovered people were using this fancy copper tape, and a solder... It was hard to find actual advice for noobs, but thanks to you I now know what is about. Thank you! and you make beautiful stuff too :)

Good list. I found if you want to have a good experience pick the best you can afford. I ended up rebuying most items after working with glass for a while and regret not getting better stuff earlier. I don’t hardly ever use those breaking pliers and love both of the Toyo glass cutters. They make stained glass much more enjoyable along with a good grinder

Good budget-friendly list. I am with Quoc Ta on buying the best you can afford if you already think you will get hooked. I have virtually replaced all the cheaper stuff I bought at the beginning as I found the better the cutter, cleaner the breaks. The only original item I am still using is the soldering iron I picked up at a big box hobby store for $25. I am going to replace it soon with a Hako iron. I have vastly expanded what I have now because it is such a great art form. I got hooked after the first project. If you are really unsure about stained glass then take Sarakit's advice and get the minimum. It is a chance you will have to take. 👍😁🉐

Nice video, but I wouldn't recommend the carborundum stone to file the edges even without some sort of lubricant. It will create tiny cracks in the edges of the glass that could cause a run once you start soldering, not to mention that it makes it much harder to foil. A glass grinder, as you point out, starts at about $100, but is a necessary expense, IMO. Sometimes you can find a used one online. I picked up both of my grinders used for less than $50.

@StainedGlassDIY
@StainedGlassDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! With lead came work I think you could get away with not using a grinder but depends how your pieces turn out. Less curves and straight cuts would be the way to go. We do sell some glass packs on our site at www.stainedglassdiy.com but I haven't bought glass online since I have a few local shops around. Maybe find a shop that's closest to you to save on shipping prices? Good luck with your project!

Thank you again for all the videos, i'm about to buy all of the stuff I need to start. I just have one concern, it's about safety. Do I need a mask while i'm soldering? I feel like there's a lot of chemical fumes going on while you work on that, and i'm not sure. I've seen people recomend wearing just a simple surgical mask, and maybe gloves, but i've also seen people doing everything without any of them, so idk, I might just use a mask as a precaution. what do you think?
@StainedGlassDIY
@StainedGlassDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I wear a mask when I solder bc I'm in a garage. If out in the open air then I might not. But for sure it's not good to breathe this stuff. You can also direct the fumes with a fan. The filter and mask and everything I use can be found on kit.co/stainedglassdiy

Unless you're soldering for a living there's very little reason to spend this much on a soldering iron. I've used a 5£ aliexpress one regularly for years and never needed anything better. The best one I've used is the pinecil which I've built from a kit for like 50 quid. I've used stations costing hundreds of pounds and the pinecil is still the one I like best.

YO i like this style of video short sweet and to the point....you got a video like this on STARTING a piece? just like segmented bits of info....i want to do this but i only know of the lead/leadfree metal you put on the edge of the glass but the tape seems better...but what i want to know is how much do you solder? just the start and end of the cut or do you have to run a bead along the WHOLE edge of the glass?
@StainedGlassDIY
@StainedGlassDIY Жыл бұрын
With the copper foil, you have to run a full bead on all foil on every edge of the glass. Preferences on how thick or round you want your bead to look but most prefer a full look.

The cheaper the iron the harder it will be for you to use to solder. You could have a harder time just because it might not melt the solder as evenly but you can try and see its limitations.

Hi Cindy, our glass we use is typically 1/8" thick so anything close to that would be okay. The thinner the glass the easier it will be to work with but not as strong as thicker glass. If over 1/8" thickness it will be tough to score.

Is stained glass work generally a expensive hobby? I'd like to make things with circular glass but i imagine it would be difficult to do...

I am new to stain glass. After copper foiling and shouldering, with a little pressure, my pieces get separated. What is the reason?

Is it separating from the foil and glass? or the solder itself?

Or in Australia the stone is $50, glass cutter and breaker is $50, solder is $70, foil tape is $30, flux is $30 and glass is $50 for 5 sheets. 😢
