Really like the way you have shown 'newbies' how to scratch build. Excellent video. Like the Y technique. As a regular scratch builder I've done mine differently, but I'm going to try your way as it looks as effective and less work. Your system is very 'matter of fact' . . . but it works; I think that maybe I'm too precise, but then I have a statement: "Don't let perfection get in the way of good" . . . unless your track laying. Have started following all your videos as I just think that you are so down to earth which is so refreshing. Cheers guys.

Thanks for your kind comments. I tend to have a practical pragmatic approach to most things, but agree that track needs doing right lol. Even then I use ballast mat rather than ballasting as it's simpler and more reliable

Great inspiration for me - it encouraged me to try to build my own station. I followed your early steps of creating a plan and then cutting out the card shapes. However after that due to available resources and a real tight budget - i then added a thin layer of polystyrene which gave a real realistic brick pattern - i think better than a printed sheet. My roof was then covered with overlapping coffee stirrers - this gave a reslistic look of ridged tiles. Added some extra ridging around the roof and weather veins which when painted gave character to the model. Thank you for the inspiration.

Nice work! I find that making card and paper buildings is actually the most enjoyable part of model railways. It's amazing what you can create from experimenting with different shapes and paper brick wraps etc

Hi Mike (and Douglas;-)), your scratch building techniques are excellent - really good to see some work being created out of almost nothing! I wish for both of you (and for my enjoyment) that you would some day build a super detailed layout/diorama. Clearly your skills are more than good enough for doing something like this. In the meantime, keep the cheap and cheerful projects coming! Cheers, Joachim

Maybe one day, but it's not really what we are about at the moment. I think maybe when I retire and I have more time I might consider it, but probably only as a small diorama as I don't think super detail is appropriate for large layouts

Might be helpful to use a couple of bulldog clips or clothes pegs to hold the parts together when asembling the whole building.

Thanks Mike, I had a trial run of making a building which I downloaded free, sticking the printed paper to card, cutting and folding the card and then trying to glue it all together without getting glue over the finished surface of the building resulting in an epic fail, your method is much better I shall be doing it like that from now on.

Brilliant video once again!......I will have to start building again soon...am having to give up on n gauge,as I’m slowly being priced out.......going over to oo as the prices are more reasonable for used items,so will be copying your building tips closely in future!!

30in should allow you to run a first radius curve that many locos, inc some older larger ones, will go round it as well as larger coaches etc

Enjoy your videos on building buildings. Are you using very thin foam core or heavy cardboard for the walls. It seems very stiff for heavy paper. Thank you

I mysefl make buildings somewhat like this. Unfortunately I don't have the time to do videos on it. Someday maybe I'll do a quick show of what buildings I've done so far. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Hungary, AGAIN!!!! XD

@@BudgetModelRailways Of course you have the time to get them done. You're getting support from MEEE! XD Jokes aside, I don't have a family yet, I broke up with my girlfriend a years ago, after 8 years, and yet I still struggle to find time besides my job and my business. But sometimes I have 1 or 2 days when I can do a complete building from start to finish.

I prefer plasticard as cardboard doesn't do well in my loft, but otherwise a great scratch build.

@@BudgetModelRailways Thanks,does your lima class 33 have the pancake motor, I am curious to know if the old lima pancake motor is a smooth, slow runner.
@BudgetModelRailways
@BudgetModelRailways 5 жыл бұрын
Hi yes it has the old pancake motor. I have four now and they all run differently, I'm told this is because the quality control was a bit erratic . However they all run better with clean wheels and contacts and a good service and lube, plus ensure they have the original weights or suitable replacement
