The most important thing you can train is your reaction. If you see a knife the first thing you should do is run. Staying safe is the number one priority in self defense. Sometimes the assailant can catch you off guard training the appropriate reaction for that situation is of the highest importance.

Can you talk about the risk of moving your hand back up to his wrist before disengaging and then disengaging by moving back? I have been moving into some knife work in my Kali classes and I noticed that being on the inside, there is still a slash around your stomach to avoid while disengaging. We have been training to get on the outside, so we avoid the angle 1 slash while disengaging. I'm just curious about the different techniques. I also did a knife seminar a few days ago under a different FMA system where we focused more on sumbrada sensitivity drills, and you're doing different things on the inside like parrying, stepping back from thrusts, parrying to the outside, etc.

Very nice video with focus on control aspect. Pretty similar to what I learned. Only thing personally I don't like is how you end. I like to inabilitate my opponent (takedown, striking, disarming?). No way I will leave an opponent who tried to stab at me free to follow me when I am running away.

Context is everything. If you’re boxed in, you’ll have little choice but to engage. In a crowd, you prob want to just disappear into the crowd and run. So many scenarios, no one size fits all. But getting to safety is the goal obv.

So I love the training; it's very similar to what I teach as a first lesson for knife fighting - AKA - what to do when you get stabbed.. Control that hand and arm, though I prefer a standing 2 on 1 kimura into hip throw. The problem is that training people to run is great - if they are better runners than the other guy. The fact is if they are significantly or even moderately faster you are merely going to make it 50 meters before you get tackled and stabbed in the back. There are videos of this out there where people are chased down and stabbed by a knife. I say this as someone who did track and field in an all black school; I knew for a fact that in a fight I couldn't run because I was the middle of the pack runner on the team. The fights I got into were shall we say rarely against those less athletic than myself. Still, a great lesson, very viable wrapping up the arm and I love the bit about controlling into the head while wrapping to get a more solid control. That's a nice touch I never tried before.

Lifelong smallish size martial artist here - think I was mostly welterweight. I don’t know why so many self defense videos parrot the old chestnut about running away to live to fight another day. Your explanation perfectly punctures that fairy tale. But one more for slow learners. What are you going to do if someone pulls a knife on you and a date? (a) yell to your date to keep up with you. (b) figure that your date will be safe because the bad actor will probably chase you; OR (c) stand your ground & protect both of you. I say if you are a healthy adult male, (c) is clearly the best choice. A guy who pulls a knife on you isn’t looking to show you up or hurt your feelings by being a better runner. And he isn’t going to be a gentleman and refrain from attacks against women. And I don’t care to hear from you that it is sexist to assume that you are the only potential solution. A jealous ex once pulled a knife when it was just the two of us. I handled my business unhurt because I controlled the spacing and gradually weakened the attacker by forcing him to remain engaged and vigilant as his energy was being converted into fatigue and loss of hand speed. As to ability of an older person to defend themselves, first if they can’t fight why would you think that they can run? And then there was my aikido sensei’s 80 year old friend. Attacked by 3 large men, he took out one so hard on his first strike that all 3 ran. Because he did some old school jujitsu atemi. I never started stuff and never ran from it. Enough times I can’t remember them all. But only injured twice neither seriously. And saw my opponents fold when they met real opposition. And they were NOT being compliant uke’s. And besides, I am proud to have served in the Marines, and Marines don’t run, calling for their mommy to help them. Running from an attack is for people who lack imagination and backbone.

At the point you trapped the knife, I cannot agree that your 2 choices are "go to the ground" versus disengage & run away. My Sifu, who was also a Judo black belt, considered a well-executed throw as much of a fight-ender on the street as a strike. In his words, he WAS hitting the opponent.. with the concrete ground. I suggest a hard throw to the pavement, a kick to the head or groin or both, THEN run away. Now, how to execute that throw?

Very good biomechanics, however, I would not run without making some damages before. Hit with the forearm on the neck, knee using your hips to the groin, then redirect and go, I am only missing that. Running while the attacker is full active is not a good solution, you can see real knife attacks videos of people running from 3 metres away and still got caught from behind or lot of time people trip, or you just not have the best shape, or you can’t run because you are with family or friends, can’t leave them alone etc etc, everything perfect! Just make some damage so you actually have time and space to run away.

When an attacker pulls a knife, his life is forfeit. One arm collapse the elbow, other hand feeds the knife back to him out of courtesy, repeat till no longer a threat. Guess whose prints are on the knife? Hint - not yours.
@BearTechNation

Very interesting... Here's a question: If you got stabbed, and you tried to "sprint" away, would you run the risk of bleeding out? People who get stabbed often die from the heart pumping out blood due to sprinting. From what I have gathered, people who get stabbed don't realize how serious the wound is. It's so frightening to be in that situation. I pray that none of us will ever experience this. Thanks for the lesson.

Good question, I think the primary goal here is to limit the damage to the body. If you don't run you could end up being a pin cushion and bleeding out sooner. Always remember to run 'too' safety, don't just run away. Aim for any possible help from others in case you pass out.

Sorry but you said " the time he goes in his pocket to get the knife, i'm already gone". So , what about a gun instead of a knife? What if he is running faster than you? You can't just cancel the threat, of course you need to get safe, but you can't just run away without taking the time to know which danger you are dealing with. That's my point.

Ok, important safety tip, at timestamp 3:34 - DO NOT DO THIS. The only reason this looks like it could maybe work is because the knife guy is smaller than the demonstrator. If you let that knife hand slide by, and the person has even halfway long arms, they're going to collar tie your head with their free hand, drop their weight, and they've now got a hand switch and your back, and you're toast, bud. - Jared
