The ratings on Buffalobore ammo is stipulated at a certain barrel length. To estimate what you will get, look at the various velocities from different length barrels , then compare to your particular firearm. Sundles really knows his stuff.

Buffalo bore uses a powder that is identical to Lil Gun (15.8 grains to be specific) and it is temperature sensitive, so depending on the ambient temps between your tests, that couldve been the difference.
@drsmokeybones
@drsmokeybones Жыл бұрын
I've used that Lil Gun load. It works great! 1400 + fps out of my GP100 6" no signs of over pressure at all. No sticky ejection or overly flat primers. This is with 180 grain cast Performance hard cast gas checked bullets.
@aarongibson3925
@aarongibson3925 Жыл бұрын
I did the same thing using cast performance bullets. I watched a video from Steep Kuntry Outdoors where he disassembled a Buffalo Bore round and I copied that data. I had no issues with this load. There was a little primer flattening but nothing at all to be concerned with. I think the cast performance bullets I used have a shorter distance from the nose to crimp groove than the Montana Bullet Works bullets he used in the video. This puts more bullet in the case which could cause more pressure with the cast performance bullets. I fired 6 rounds with an average velocity of 1430 with my 6” gp100.

Underwood rates a lot of their semi auto ammo in like a 3.4” barrel buffalo bore probably rates their ammo in no less than a 6” lol. For example, Underwood has a 135 grain .40 S&W rated by them at 1,400 fps. You would think this .357 magnum is way more powerful, but it’s barely more powerful from a 4” barrel. The .40 gets 610 foot pounds out of a 4”, this .357 magnum got 659. The .40 manages a solid 675 foot pounds out of a 4.9” barrel. And it’s also in saami spec. I shoot it out of my Glock 23 all the time. If this did hit 1,400 fps out of a 6” barrel it would be 783 foot pounds. I would imagine the .40 would hit in the 700’s as well out of a 6” if a 4.9” hits 675. Good video and still powerful result.

The 1375fps rating is a 4-inch S&W Mountain Gun. The only GP100 velocity (6-inch) listed on their site is a 125gr (1707 fps). Would be nice to see a Buffalo Bore product side-by-side comparison between a S&W L-Frame and GP100 both with the same barrel length.
@drsmokeybones
@drsmokeybones 8 ай бұрын
The Ruger and the Smith & Wesson should give fairly similar velocity results. +/- 100 fps difference or less I'd bet.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 8 ай бұрын
@@drsmokeybones Perhaps. Yet 100 fps is a pretty wide spread. Forcing cone gap, barrel bore diameter, chamber dimensions all vary between the brands (even within a brand), so it's hard to say. Colt Python (originals) all ran slower barrels than S&W and Ruger due to tapered barrel bores (0.001" to achieve accuracy), even to being slower in a 6-inch Python than a 4-inch S&W by published test data. No idea if their new generation are faster or not.

Wow, if I hadn't swapped out my black ramp and red ramp front sights to finally upgrade to a fiberoptic, I would say I'm looking at my own revolver. Literally exact same...4" GP100 with the grip changed to the Hogue hardwood that happens to have almost the exact same color and grain pattern...I also have some Buffalo Bore ammo for it (except I have the 125 grain JHPs). Some Rugers run a pretty ulgy-wide cylinder gap dimension. Guy in Alaska had his 6-inch GP100 "fixed" by Ruger after poor performance and it returned back to testing these 180gr loads and registered just over 1,000 ft-lb energy (1582+ fps) on a couple shots.

What gun? A Colt Python has very tight gap (leads to being unreliable after a few cylinders between cleanings). S&W have bigger gaps and can lose 100fps over the Colt, but are more reliable. I will gladly take 1400fps from my Taurus vs 1500fps from a Colt that will lock up if dirty or in cold weather.
