From this excellent footage it certainly appears that the train indeed entered the siding, ran through the end of track, managed to make it straight across the bridge span before the lead unit dug in, spining it around off to the right. Clearly, either caused by vandalism to the switch or quite unlikley, by the lead unit splittng the switch point. Very lucky that it didn't hit the side bridge girder head on, which could caused a bridge failure and/or the locomotive ending up in the street.
@25mfd4 жыл бұрын
i wouldn't say it was quite unlikley, by the lead unit splittng the switch point... picking the switch that's one of the main issues with facing point switches... could have been that or something else, broken rail perhaps, broken axle or cracked wheel maybe... but at the time the vid was made it's so soon to guess what happened
@israel85234 жыл бұрын
@@25mfd Appears to be a 10 car side track. Why would this long train be using it? Answer: It wouldn't be. Loco picked the point at the diverging point from the main line, then they went over a derail in the siding or vandals opened the switch. Train kept going through siding until the derailed axle or truck reached the end of the siding. (Siding could have guard rails, which kept locos straight until over the bridge.) Train went into emergency when the trainline disconnected between the 1st and 2nd units. Cause: The switch had poor ties and ballast under switch point, broken switch point, thin flange on a loco or vandals opened the facing point switch. Highly unlikely to be train handling, a broken rail, wheel or axle.

Hi Dave, that line is no longer governed by track control, it's "dark" and there no longer exists any circuitry that could have detected the open switch. I think NS petitioned to have that removed after they purchased the Buffalo Line from Conrail. Given that it was a switch off the main, and if the switch were open, it would have been detected and the train would have been signaled to stop ahead of the problem.

If I'm understanding correctly, most of the siding had been previously removed, leaving only a few hundred yards or so? If this is the case, why wouldn't the railroad have taken it back all the way to the switch, including removing the switch? The only reason I can think of, is that this saved some money....not. Also, why all the gravel fill by the derailed engine? How will that help with the recovery? Thanks for the excellent drone footage.
@larrylawson51724 жыл бұрын
The bank up to the track is steep. The gravel allowed access to the track for the pipe layers (bulldozers with A-frame cranes on the side). While they were going by it allowed them to raise the loco to make it easier/safer to put the loco back on the tracks. They could then lift the loco rather than drag it.
@daviddave73924 жыл бұрын
What was left of the old EA Siding was so rotted that it is amazing the train made it that far, it was no shape to handle that tonnage. I highly doubt that siding will stay now, there is another long siding at S. Wales anyway.
@mattcreator84804 жыл бұрын
those unused sidings sometimes don't line correctly... running a badly lined switch facing point is a good way to end up all over the. ground...case in point. Did they intend to use the siding? perhaps someone lined for the siding and they didn't see the target.
@daviddave73924 жыл бұрын
Last time that siding was used was in the early 80's when Conrail did a massive upgrade of the line and they put their camp cars at the siding at Persons St., and the siding was pulled up there long ago.

@davidcrowe61754 жыл бұрын
To investigate the cause, the switch would be first place to look. Train clearly traveled down the siding and ran off the end. Was switch lever set to siding (yes or no)? It's simple question on the switch - set to main line or siding? IF switch lever was thrown over to siding, did vandals move the lever or did a work crew use the siding and forget to set it back to main line? When did the last train use the main line? When was last work crew through? Narrow down the time frame. If vandals moved the switch lever there must a 1000 security cameras in East Aurora Street area of derailment.

Impossible to run off the end of a siding, a siding has a switch on both ends, this is a spur so it had only one entry switch, meaning that the track is a dead end.

How fast was the train going is what I want to know that it went that far on no tracks. I'm not saying they was going an incredible speed but I'm curious to find out. The tank cars are designed to withstand a certain amount of damage. As well as the locomotives, to protect the crew. It has already been investigated the engineer and trainee are not to blame, the train was under the posted speed. I have a picture of the switch. Seems clear to me The switch was lined for the siding. Someone, cut the pad lock.. And threw the switch for the siding. The derailer and subsequent accident did as they were supposed to. Stop the train... It did. No one was hurt. Property damage is minimal. Looks to me law enforcement is to blame.
