The original chicken wing restaurant chain has had an unexpected history. This video talks about how they've grown over the years while highlighting two different periods of struggle. I Have to admit, I got pretty hungry while making this one.

I have a lot of fond memories of BWW's in college 10+ years ago. They were reasonably priced, had good wings, and a nice atmosphere. Now, every bar and mom and pop place does it as well as them, and for less money. Unless you shop their specials, it has very little draw to me.

For a very short time, they had an All You Can Eat wings... it was like $24 or something per person. I heard of it from a friend, and I was able to go myself. I brought my siblings, and we had a hell of a time, and I tried every single wing flavor on the menu. The next week, I invited my friends to go with me to do the same, and when we went, they already stopped doing the all you can eat, and my friends proceeded to believe that I simply made it up. To this day, they never believed it happened.

I used to love B-dubs so much, it was one of my favorite places to go. But when they were bought out by Arby’s, for me at least it felt like the quality shot way downhill. First it was the small things which didn’t bother me much, but when they started to decrease the food portions of the sides, raise the price, and lower the quality of the wings, it really killed it for me personally. Nowadays I go to wing stop which I’m totally fine with now cause I love wingstop.

I have mixed feelings about my local Wingstop. When I order via their app and then walk over from my apartment-literally right across the street, hooray for downtown suburban life!-the food's great. When I ordered at work for pickup five minutes after I get off the train, I have no wait time...because they clearly cooked it muuuuuch earlier and it's gotten cold. I swear the sick day I had a couple months ago had something to do with that chicken sitting in the bacterial danger zone on a shelf for who knows how long...possibly the hour and a half between when I placed the order-for-later and when I picked it up. Either way I haven't ordered ahead when more than a block away on foot since.

100%. Used to love it, but the quality of the food has dropped significantly to now feeling like a fast food restaurant with a wait staff. Wings are smaller and often dry. Fries are soggy. Thankfully they can’t screw up the beer. Takeout is a joke. Orders are often not ready on time and 4 out of 5 orders have errors. Too bad.

Same here. I absolutely love wings, but going to a wing place and seeing ~$12 for a 6 piece and ~$16-17 for a 9 or 10 piece throws me off. Once Ive got a side, a beer, and tip, Im looking at $30+ easily for some wings. Not worth it to me when Pollo Tropical is around the corner and I can get half a grilled chicken, 2 sides, a roll, and some sauces for $9. Pollo Tropical's sauces suck ass compared to BWWs, but for something to cost 3x as much just for a nice sauce is not worth it to me.

Great video, I enjoyed learning about the history of the company and the Buffalo connection! I moved to Buffalo 5 years ago and quickly learned about the food culture here beyond just the wings. I've only been to a BWW once to watch a Bills game, and that was before I moved to Buffalo. I love sports, wings, and beer, but it was never a place I really thought about going to. In Buffalo, there was a BWW not too far from me and it was never busy and closed a few years ago. People in Buffalo prefer dive bars, hidden gems, local businesses, places that feel more authentic and therefore chain restaurants can struggle here. Plenty of locals would tell you that the Anchor Bar isn't that great, it's for tourists and only worth it for the sake of saying you went there. There also is another major wing shortage right now and prices have been continuing to rise.

As an employee at a BWW I honestly have loved my job so far. Management has been great and the employees very friendly. From what I've seen, COVID really hurt BWW for awhile but rn it's getting busier and busier. I definitely say that the varied menu option has increased a want for the restaurant, plus many people who want to watch sports live still come and spend a lot of time there. Overall I'd say the restaurant is getting better and starting to rise again

Haven't been in several years and even longer since I've eaten the wings there. They used to have good wings that were meaty and made fresh. Around 10 years or so something changed and they started using scrawny little wings that they kept under heat lamps in their expo window. They'd scoop some out of the heat lamp bins, sauce them, and send them out to the tables no longer crispy or very hot. I'm sure it saved some cost doing this, but it cost them at least this customer.

AKA the Applebees approach to cost-saving. Using any sort of pre-made food at a sit-down restaurant is always a red flag, lets me know a place is starting to go under. Restaurants do it because it saves mainly on labor costs, but the quality is noticeably worse for the customer.

I have to say their burger and salad are low key some of the best and are flying under the radar. The biggest problem I've seen is the cost of food. Ordering wings has gotten surprisingly expensive. As someone that used to work there I can tell you that their food quality isn't all that great. I was there for about 8 years and we went from cooking and cutting are chicken for our wraps and stuff every morning. To a precooked and precut chicken. On top of that the burgers went from a decent patty to one that basically was only good because it was cooked on a grill. Then they switch to flat tops and you could tell that the meat was terrible then. Eventually, they found a better patty though. Also before I left they switched from a count to a pound weight. That slowed down production because you had to weigh the wings for each order then.

I was a founding employee of a new franchise by the University of Minnesota campus in the early '90s. The food was tasty and popular when executed right, though not healthy. The 22oz beer specials were also very popular. It was a wild time of late night food and occasional brawls. The owner was a good fit for this chaotic franchise and they closed after a few years.

Firstly, I'd say BW3's is quite good. They are probably my favorite wing of all the big chain restaurants. There are better wings to be found at local spots however, which I think is a big part of their decline in sales. Virtually every bar and pub has wing offerings nowadays, and often a wing night once a week where they sell them as a loss leader. It's hard to make the case for BW3'S when you can go to a wing night at a cozy local spot pretty much any night of the week.

They served Buffalo Wings dammit! Tossed in Buffalo sauce with celery and blue cheese on the side (ranch is heresy) and a weck roll. Sauce choice was mild, medium, hot, wild and wet and wild (wings swimming in sauce). The challenge among my friends was to order wet and wild and after eating a few see which couple could kiss the longest. At least that’s how I remember it. The years may have embellished a bit. I’m a purist and was really disappointed when I visited a modern BW3. But after seeing this video I see what they had to do. I elected to give them a try about a month ago, after another place I liked was closed during business hours. I'll say this much, the wings and sauces are very tasty...for how little you get. These wings were about the size of a tater tot you'd get a Sonic and the quantity wasn't enough to make up for it. However it was very clean, the service was pleasant, and there was a great variety in the TV programming which kept it lively. Problem is, they're square in a Food Oasis. Texas Roadhouse, Cheesecake Factory, PF Changs, Fogo de Chao, Cheddars Skratch Kitchen, and many other local places. It's the same issue with the Freddy's Steakburgers, Culvers, and Bahama Breeze...good restaurants, but they're dwarfed next to better tasting and reasonably priced food.
