Buffets almost never last in my town, because people are voracious eaters here and refuse to pay an amount equal to what they typically eat. We had a Ryan’s here for years that my family loved, but it got driven out of business by all the people who would eat 10 plates of food and then balk when they raised the price of the buffet by $1.

It's not a scam. It's common sense. As a chef for over 30 years, I can definitely say they do this so people can fill up on the cheaper stuff at the front. It's just about cost & efficiency.

It's definitely NOT a scam. Most folks steer clear of the salad bar and bread because we already know that's what fills you up. We go straight to the high end good stuff. Also, its ALL YOU CAN EAT. You recoup the price of entry by your second plate.🤷🏾‍♀️

The problem is that some people eat like their life depend on it. They continue to eat while they are full, but they want to get their money worth. They refuse to let the owner of the restaurant earn any money. People with that mindset are bad for the business. A boss of an all you can eat restaurant once said: ‘I’ll pay money for the food, they pay with their health.’

I once overheard a Chinese owner yelling at some customers who probably overstayed at the restaurant, "you here!!! four hoooour!!! Go home!" 😂😂😂

Yes, I remember a Chinese buffet had boiled the crab legs in so much salt that you could not eat it. Another time they started cleaning the adjacent booths with a terribly strong disinfectant and was spraying so much around us that we couldn’t stay. We got up and left. Another place where the all you can eat fried crab was so deteriorated that it was not eatable. Some of these places are really bad. I still find some good items there and eat them out of house and home.

Assuming the food is OK, I don't begrudge any restaurant or hotel that tries to keep the worst kind of customer in check. Possibly because I've been both sides of that counter in my time. A small German country hotel my wife and I stayed in some years ago offered a wonderful cold buffet breakfast. And the outright selfishness and greed of people (of several nationalities) - pushing, pulling, and grabbing food - sometimes even handling it before putting it back(!) - had to be seen to be believed. Including one couple who had to be prevented from simply lifting out entire trays of food, to carry them off to their table! Given they were middle-aged, how could they not know how a buffet worked?

Commonly, restaurants will refill your drinks so you fill up faster. It gets a better turnover specifically at dine-in restaurants. They also keep it chilly asf so you aren't comfortable. At least that's what the places I worked at did.

I eat at a local Chinese buffet every now and then. And while I do see the waiters walking around, eyeing the buffet stations, they don't give the feeling of making sure you don't take too much. In fact, they're watching to see which of the pans are near empty so they can tell their chefs to prepare more. It might also be that I drink slowly so as to fill my stomach with food more than fluid, but they never bother me for a refill until my cup is basically empty. In short, most buffets are not scamming you, most of them are likely just making sure you are satisfied with your meals. Because satisfied customers are likely returning customers and returning customers guarantees income.

My best experience was at an All You Can eat Sushi/Seafood restraunt. It didnt have a traditional buffet- you filled out an order slip, got the food, and you could just continuely send back orders. The restraunt had a policy where in order to cut down on waste, you had to at least mostly finish your plates, otherwise you would be charged for what the dish wouldve costed if you bought it seperatly. I went with my two friends who really wanted to try a lot of food. Amazing wait staff and everything, really cool experience. Well, we were smart and ordered small amounts of things, but just put in more overall tickets. The amount of times I had to clear an entire platter myself because they either discovered they didnt like it or really wanted to dave room to try something else. Im still proud of myself.

I worked at some buffets and the reason why the salads first is because it's an appetizer ,then you get to the main course which included the starches and protein and sauce , and then the dessert That's why most of the time you'll see that order They even put bread at first because you get bread when you arrive at most restaurant as a startup
