This actually happened to my father. A tick gave him an allergy to mammal meat. Stopped for a bit, then came back. It's scary knowing this is out of our control

This thing is real. I am allergic to red meat now. I have had other family members affected before and I figured I would still eat my bacon and deal with a little itch. But it can light your skin on fire with welps and burning pain. The symptoms are so bad that it was easy to stop eating red meat. Chicken gets old but I do not want to go through that again.

I think I actually got this when I was young. I had a tick bite on my ear and the tick was abnormal. After the bite I became a strict vegetarian because I would vomit or have muscle spasms in my stomach making me unable to eat. I still can't eat pork to this day. Luckily I can eat steak and eggs without much symptoms. sea food was fine and so was chicken I just took no risks throughout my childhood because i felt that horrible. Whats sad is that i was always made fun of for my allergy. Im glad that i now know it was something real and not me being a fussy eater.

I grew up on a livestock farm. I eat steak and burgers like 70% of my meals. Last tick bite i was aware of was like 9-10 years ago. Just found out i have this after feeling like i was gonna die for a month straight. Dreading the thought of chicken for every meal for the rest of my life lol

We've had Lonestar ticks here on Long Island (NY) for at least a decade...they didn't include in their initial tick range, but eventually it grow out to include us. Probably longer than a decade, I do remember as a kid in boyscouts, about 20 years ago, it was a big deal that they were coming to the island.

5:20 - yeah, it's just meningitis and Lyme disease, totally nothing to worry about... And to those who say about vegan diet - it's about allergy to mammalian meat, not all meat. I think you can still eat your chicken or turkey :)

I love crawling around in the bush. And have learned a few things. 1. Always have closed shoes. Not only keeps the ticks off you, but it gives you some extra protection if you put your foot down where you shouldn't have. 2. Get rid of your shorts. Wear only long pants. I've walked in places, where when I look down, I'm red from the knees down from all the ticks and because I was wearing long pants I didn't get bitten. 3. Insect repelant is VERY important. I use peaceful Sleep sticks. I use them around my anckles and any exposed parts of my body. when wearing a long sleeve shirt, all that is required is a little around the wrists to keep ticks away. 4. Don't leave your clothes lying on the ground. I found that out the hard way, by getting a tick behind the ear, when I put my hat back on. I also forgot to put some of the insect repelent on the inside rim. I can tell you these things work. After a about a 6 year period of regular camping with a bunch of guys, I never got tick bite fever and was only bitten 2 twice. The most of guys on the other hand, some of them got sick more than a few times.

I wonder if I had this. My parents lived on farm land and you were sure to get some ticks going outside. The lone star tick was one you'd encounter. Anyway about 1995 I suddenly started getting very itchy hives with some lip swelling. Never could pin down the cause. Luckily a doctor about a year later prescribed claritin and one pill gave me 24 hour relief, so I didn't have to worry about it. It cleared up after 20 years and has been gone since. So I'll never really know but this sure makes a lot of sense for me.

I've been dealing with this issue for a while! Red meat would give be such bad rashes and sick stomachs with gastrointestinal issues... it sucks man.

I've recently been getting the same symptoms from eating steak, but not for hamburgers or bacon. And I haven't been bitten by a tick, I believe. No idea what's wrong with me?

I remember when I was a teenager the family was sitting around the dinner table eating hamburger helper when all the sudden I couldn't breath. I thought I was choking but in fact I developed a sudden allergy to beef and my throat was swelling closed. And previous to that I had got a nasty tick bite. Makes sense now

My worst fear

I know someone with the allergy. One day while eating dinner, the person could not get the beef to go down. It "stuck" behind the breast bone. When this person tried to drink liquid to get the beef to move, the fluid came back up through the mouth and nose. Beef was out. Then pork started doing the same thing and what could go down, cause horrible heart burn. Finally, lamb did the same thing. Turkey and chicken are fine.

I live in portland oregon and I had to pull a lone star out of my blue heelers ear last summer...they are definitely making there way across the country.

I’ve been bitten by tons of lone star ticks throughout my life and I still enjoy a nice rare steak every now and then.

That’s so cool I go to uva and we just recently discussed this in my biochemistry class.

My dad has Lymes disease and one time we went to a sushi restaurant he asked if the soup he was ordering had beef or pork in it and they said no turns out they were lying and he almost had to go to the hospital before he found some allergy relief.

Interesting. I am pretty sure it wasn't from a bug bite but I cannot tolerate much sausage. After eating a small amount it turns my stomach. I don't get an allergic reaction per se but I would definitely puke if I made myself eat anymore. Used to able to eat as much sausage as I wanted when I was a kid. I miss that : (

I had a tick bite ten years ago and this year I tested positive for red meat allergy and also some fish. I also live in Latvia, that’s not the area mentioned in the video. Is the tick bite the only reason for this kind of allergy?

They have very tough shell so press very hard. To remove tick attached. There are so many ways and each says the other is wrong. So? I just pull them out. I try to pull slowly, hope it lets go, but they never do. Leaving a tick in is NOT good. Many ticks I have pulled off of me the head broke off. I (me personally) have never had a problem. Many say that a tick head broke off can be bad. But leaving a tick attached is worse.

i was at a boy scout camp in kansas, and at night when i was falling asleep felt something crawling on me, turned on my flashlight and it was a lone-star. Anyways i killed it and thought to myself "if i didn't feel that i'd have alpha-gal alergy". Anyways i saw at least 5 more lone-stars crawling around, thankfully not on me. They are more common than you think, and i wouldnt be surprised if one or two kids from that camp came home with the allergy.
