What do Bugatti's new hyper car and a golf ball have in common? Well... apparently their aerodynamics. That's right Bugatti designers took inspiration from a design thats over 100 years old! On the roof of the Bolide's hood scoop is a "morphable outer skin" that Bugatti says will help the Bolide reach speeds upwards of 300mph. But if you're like Jerry you might be questioning if this golf ball inspired aero is really all it's cracked up to be. Find out, on todays episode of Bumper to Bumper.

Kinda...need context, It was dangerous not just because of the speed, it was specifically the speed in the corners in conjunction with the sudden loss of aero made from the underbody and diffuser. The underbody took advantage of bernoulli's principle and channeled the air under the car and sending it through a smaller volume creating low pressure as a result, then sending it out the back to re-attach with the above laminar flow right before both hit the rear wing for yet even more down force. The problem came when the side skirts that literally dragged on the ground and would flex to create constant contact and trap the air so it could only come in from the front and leave out the rear would lift too high from a rumble strip or bump...and instantly all the low pressure air would fly out the sides making the down force suddenly vanish ...kinda a problem when taking a turn at 120mph or more accurate, it's a problem when crashing at 120mph because that's the only thing that can happen at that point.

Mythbusters has a whole episode about this! they dimpled a car and actually greatly improved aero. Adam Savage has a video on his channel where he says that result is one of the most shocking, and one of his favorite episodes!

They started getting approached to build test cars for at least one of the Big 3 manufacturers, but I forget which one. They obviously declined, but that manufacturer (Ford maybe?) started doing their own research based on that episode.

Apart from the fact the word bolide is a nickname for a car in French and not an Italian word (that I know of ) but then again it also has a link with a meteor in French as well.

I’ve experimented with this on my surfboard fins and it’s super noticeable because the front fins will create vortices in the water that allow the back fin to pivot more easily (used a Dremel and belt sander)

It's likely that the definition changed over time, since racing cars are pretty new compared to the word itself, which was borrowed from the Latin "Bolid", which in turn was borrowed from the Greek "Bolid", meaning "javelin, or bolt of lightning". Modern usage is "racing car" or "fast car"

Love the nerdy stuff. Mythbusters did an episode where they applied some ridiculous amount of clay to a car so they could make dimples and test the miles per gallon vs the same car stock. They ran the car to empty both times and got pretty much the same outcome. I don’t remember them taking into account the weight of the clay. So I’ve since wanted to see a carmaker try this. Your explanation of the benefit active dimples at different speeds was fascinating.

Nope, bolide is a meteorite that doesn't hit the ground but gets consumed by the atmosphere. Then we call fast cars "bolide" but it just is a metaphore. So it is not exactly "fire ball" but, you know, close enough

This method of aerodynamics has already been practised before by Mitsubishi with their Evo 9 and 10 models. Those "hedgehog" spikes on the roof are there for the same reason. To reduce pressure drag. It's also the reason why some rear wings either have grooves in them that curve upwards or alternatively, "Swan Necks" that reach on the top of the wing instead of stalks on the bottom.
