I had a blue dragonborne cleric. His name was Balthaxxxar Drowning. He was more of a front lines fighter who used spiritual weapon a lot… not much of a healer lol. After watching this I think I’ll try again. I really like the Scripture route. I’m thinking maybe a set of divine tomes with certain “laws” or “guides” were created by a certain god and along with some spells and stories of past they show the way that they would like their followers to act and behave.

I love the idea of unwilling clerics. like a God of War that seeks out a pacifist because they know the true cost of violance (or the opposite). A cleric choosen ny the god of a race they are at war with (like a drow cleric of lathander). Or a random person who learned of a forgotten god abd were forced to be their cleric because they're the closest thing the god can find to worshiper.

"The unwilling_____" is always a good source of stories. But I also like the "Faith in Abstract". like a Light Cleric who just believes that every mortal has a bit of the sun in them that needs to be nurtured through the blood of enemies. as they grow in power, they gain followers, and more belief and more power. the natural conclusion of this arc is Apotheosis at level 20. kind of a mix of two you mentioned

I just started a game where i play a death domain cleric that was a combat medic with ptsd and has seen into the 'other side'. A death god delayed his certain death on the battlefield. Now, years later, my cleric has been drinking his way from town to town doing odd jobs. Running from his oath but with the knowledge that, in the end, death always wins.

I remember a video by The Dungeon Dudes about clerics - I really like the idea of a cleric who's basically a magnet for a god's power. I'm playing a cleric of Auril (tempest domain): a pirate who was left stranded after his crew got slaughtered, and on Midwinter he gave Auril - the goddess of winter - a desperate prayer. He saw a ship just in swimming distance. He attributes his miraculous survival as a deed of Auril, but he never knows if he's doing well. He's a well-meaning person who wants to strengthen and support people, but under Auril's tenets he needs to usher in eternal winter. He doesn't really understand why a goddess of death and eternal winter saved him, nor why she blesses him with her power, but for the time being he wants to use it to do good in the world.

I was toying with the idea of a cleric of themselves. My idea basically broke down into an Aasimar private I death cleric who has frequent dreams of a figure cloaked in darkness and a vibe of inevitable doom. I eventually wanted the character to realize that they are becoming the figure they see. I kinda combined it into an attempt at a gunslinger cleric, but no dice getting that to work right now.

If someone wants to play a Priest but not a Cleric, which are warrior priests, you can take the Wizard but use Cleric Spells and use a Prayer Book as your Spellbook. I do like to think that Cleric Spells are more like prayers to their deity, so when a Cleric is casting a spell they are preforming a specific prayer.

on the "believe in yourself" cleric: i am playing a cleric that was bookish and young, and found their power in their faith in how the world worked an how they could manipulate it with magics. but they were always low charisma, shy, nervous, but devoted to keeping their friends safe. as the story of the campaign has evolved, they have become this individual, standing up to the BBG when they confront the party and, even with their 8 charisma, nervously trembles in front of this powerful creature to stand up for their friends and help end their mind control (which they saved against thankfully). seeing this section has helped me better understand how i can continue portraying this character as the campaign continues to evolve :)

Thanks to this videos and ideas in the comment, I'm creating my very first player character. I don't know about her race yet (I was thinking about tiefling because i like those horns and it could make things interesting for her backstory), but she has been abandonned at birth and Hestia has been taking care of her since then. She loves her adoptive mother and the both of them tried to make her a Life Cleric, following Hestia's Domain... but it couldn't work, because she already had the power of a Domain without them knowing why or where it comes from (I have an easy culprit in mind but I will let my future DM decide and maybe surprise me) : she is a Tempest Cleric. So she has a personnality more fitting of a Life Cleric who has spent whole her life with Hestia aka the best goddess : she loves fiercely and want to protect those she loves. But she will probably have to learn to do it with storms and lighting, and not only by healing. Every healing spells will come from her study with Hestia, and she will also have offensive spells coming from who knows where. I think she got some training with other gods, and that Hephaistos gave her a spare training weapon, not anything really fancy.

Okay. So, hi, guy from the Warlock video. I've played three kinds of Clerics so far, but the most unique one of them all was Father Lyle D'agerou, a philosopher whose devotion to four tenets about conflict caused Tempus to favor him at a distance, especially since he was the neutral god of War and honorable battle. Lyle also wasn't a priest by any means, but he was seen by many to be holy because he used his magic primarily to aid those in need, and chose to support his allies oftentimes over joining in outright conflict. He also was the voice of reason, convincing our murder happy king to mete out just punishment. Now, Tempus only granted him Channel Divinity and Divine Intervention, Lyle manifested his magic through discovery, action and self reflection. Now...the tenets he followed: Is conflict justified in this instance? If not, focus on supportive spellcasting. Can conflict be avoided? If not, swiftly handle it, but if so, focus on diplomacy. Is this conflict being partaken of in anger? If so, walk away. If not, be the deciding factor. (Also, no multiclassing into Barbarian.) Can this conflict be fought fairly? (No using poison or underhanded/cheap tricks.) He's definitely one of the more unique characters I've played, as his goal was to create a school of philosophy based on these tenets to raise powerful clerics to keep kingdoms in check.

Oooh got a pair for this one. One was a Vedalken Knowledge Cleric that I played as a bookish archaeologist. Between his high Int, proficiency or expertise in all the Int skills, and his Researcher feature from his sage background, dude was a lore sponge. I even was allowed to take the Historian UA feat, so I could support the party while diegetically inserting lore dumps. Peony Everpetal on the other hand was an attempt at making a better Beast Master Ranger via Nature Cleric. Bonding with multiple 'companions' through the Animal Friendship and Speak with Animals spells. She commanded them in combat with the Animal Handler UA feat and thanks to her Wood Elf traits and skills, was a decent archer, scout, and survivalist outside of urban areas.

I technically have two clerics. One is a literal heal-bot (warforged life domain cleric) that was made by the adventurer's guild to keep adventurers alive. My plan is to give him as many healing and support spells as possible, and clerics happened to have access to the most. I may give him a 3-level dip into a dreams druid, for goodberry and their Balm of the Summer Court feature for further healing potential. The other is a gold dragonborn that led a church of Bahamut, and swore vengeance upon a mysterious entity that annihilated her home village, save for the church that she was still in. When I made her, I initially made her as a cleric since I didn't really like the flavor of the paladin (this was back before I learned about reflavoring, and I didn't like the idea of the oath). Then, a couple years later, I decided to respec her into a vengeance paladin, which fit her story both thematically and mechanically.

How about a Cleric who got their powers through maths? I have a Life Cleric who spent his life deciphering the Life Equation (ala DC Comics) and he finally solved it in his old age. He tore open a portal to the Positive Energy Plane which de-aged him from 80 to 20 - and with a superhuman physique. Now he spends his time trying to resolve the equation and open the portal to revolutionise medicine. In other words, as he levels up, he solves another piece of the equation and gets new spells. When he hits level 10, the portal starts reopening (Divine Intervention).

Oooooh I love the idea of a benevolent Death cleric (or grave, but death works best for this concept for the mechanics) that's more of a shaman who summons the spirits of their ancestors to help the group fight, perhaps possessing the corpses of others temporarily. @@TheClericCorner I don't blame you, it's almost as old as I am. I'm referencing maybe the coolest thing to ever happen in World of Warcraft. The second expansion to the game was called Wrath of the Litch King and it was about this man named Arthas who was some prince absolutely devoted to his mission of destroying evil and the undead. Arthas has his mom die, he sees village fall to the undead hordes, he watches people he loves get maimed, brutal stuff. In his quest he goes to the arctic circle and goes straight to the heart of evil, his dad hears of this wreckless crusade and tries to stop him and recall all his troops back to his homeland. Arthas goes apeshit and burns all the ships down before the troops can make it back and tells everyone that they're either completing this mission or dying. His forces weak and low on moral start falling and soon the Prince hears the voice of a magic helmet called the Helm of Domination and the whisper of a magic sword called Frost Mourn. This armor belongs to the Litch King, a dark god who lives in outer space and rules over the undead. Of course Arthas takes it, and is corrupted, and he becomes the very thing he sought to destroy. He manages to return home and levels his country to raise legions of undead to serve him in his frosty palace. He's my favorite villain, and one of the reasons I love Ice as a theme and motif. I've once played a Blood of Vol life cleric who was also very casual about raising the dead which did turn some heads when first introduced. For those who don't know Eberron works on faith gives power rather than the gods as no one is really sure if the gods are real or not this gives a lot of leeway for alignments there can evil clerics of good gods taking their faiths into the extreme and good clerics of evil gods reinterpreting the faith as something kinder and benevolent. And the blood of Vol is a interesting faith being closest to #5 the seekers they call themselves believe that divine power comes from within and life itself while be kinda atheistic believing that the gods are either malevolent or nonexistent they overall seek to ascend to a higher state through the faith they have a casual view of undead seeing them as hollow husks or as martyrs and having a nihilistic world view meaning while they can be villains most are quite kind and community driven knowing that their life is the only one and seek to make a better world because of it.

Cleric power source idea Discovery of a new path in tension with (not necessarily in opposition to) the official path of their religion, at least at first. Becoming more clear in their beliefs and articulating them and defending their orthodoxy is leveling up until a certain point, but either you or your religion will have to bend at a certain point as you keep leveling. If there aren't enough high level clerics, you might win the battle of wills. If there are, then you will have to find a different religion (and potentially a different God and perhaps a different domain or worse class).

Adrenalin injections into the heart, like in Pulp Fiction, really do exist. Emergency doctors do this extremely rarely, slowly, and with great caution, so the movie depiction is way off. But it still means saving someone's life by stabbing them in the heart. The Precordial Thump, which can be used to treat cardiac arrhythmia without a defibrillator. It's a fancy name for punching the patient in the chest in a very specific way. If done right, and if it works, it restarts the pulse just like Fonzie hitting the jukebox. If done wrong, it makes things much worse, and the heart is still stopped. Do Not Try This at Home. This procedure is considered mostly obsolete, as external defibrillators become more and more common. Automatic external defibrillators which analyze a patient's heart rate to determine whether or not a patient requires defibrillation, guides the user through the process, can be operated effectively even by people with very little medical training, are becoming available in most public places. Both the professional and the automated versions operate on the same principle: essentially resetting your heart by shooting it with electricity. A lot of electricity. A (prescription-only) EpiPen looks a lot like a writing pen, but is for treating severe allergic reactions. You use it by jamming it straight into your thigh- and don't waste time taking your pants off first. Atropine and Praxilidome injectors used by the military to counter the effects of nerve toxin also work much the same way, and for a similar reason: If the person with the symptoms can't give himself the antidote right away, he'll be incapacitated and could die very quickly. The Jet injector can look disturbingly like a handgun◊, although it is used like a syringe. The fact that it is pressed to the skin, not used as a projectile from a distance as would be expected from a real handgun, slightly diminishes the effect. More generally, anything involving a hypodermic needle. Many student nurses have to overcome an emotional hurdle when they give injections for the first time, because they're naturally reluctant to stab somebody with sharp metal. The same goes for patients who have to learn to inject themselves. For some, the sense of wrongness is a bigger barrier than fear of pain. However, if you're giving yourself multiple injections every day (as people with insulin-dependent diabetes need to do) you tend to get used to it very quickly. The closest example would be the scalpel, when used in a specific way, and with other surgical tools, each of which are also used in a specific way. Posology, the study of measuring out quantities, reflects the phrase, "Poisons and medicine are oftentimes the same substance given with different intents." Various types of eye surgery involve cutting apart and shooting lasers at the inside of your eyeballs to make them work better. Until the late 19th century, most physicians believed that, since inflamed areas were red, it meant there was too much blood in them. This is how the practice of bloodletting began. It could be accomplished with a leech, but was all-too-often done with just a cut. It often only worsened the problems. However, it's actually making a comeback in modern medicine. Medicinal leeches are increasingly being used for everything from microsurgery to varicose vein treatment. And regular phlebotomies (a.k.a. bloodletting) is currently the medically accepted treatment for haemochromatosis and other types of iron overload. Trepanation (a.k.a. Drilling a hole into someone's skull) is still used today, except instead of letting demons out of the brain, it's aimed more at helping reduce damage due to the brain swelling from an injury. This is of course, also the basis of the Cricothyrotomy, where a hole is cut directly into someone's windpipe to allow them to breathe when their airways are blocked. Generally done only as a last resort, and typically only by trained medical professionals. A hemothorax, bleeding into the pleural cavity, is rectified in a similar manner by cutting a hole into the cavity, stitching a rubber tube into the hole and letting the difference in air pressure force the blood into a bucket. Despite its crude nature, the procedure is safe enough to perform with minimal anesthetic, for better or worse. Botulinum toxin is the most acutely toxic substance known to man, and a prime candidate for use in biological weaponry. However in small doses it can be used to treat eye disorders and sweating though it's most well known for its use in cosmetic procedures: you might know it as Botox. Nitroglycerin is one of the most powerful explosives to ever exist. It also doubles as heart medication. Medical laser pistol was created in USSR in 1980s but didn't catch on. It was based on 1984 laser pistols designed for space station personnel for blinding enemy satellites, effectively a very powerful laser pointer with a cartridge of single-shot lamps and batteries. Blinding and medical versions had different barrels. They could be used as coagulators (to stop bleeding) or to disinfect wounds. 1990 design was made of plastic, with swappable barrels. Mocked by this picture◊, featuring a police medic and his "magic wellness stick". A medical technique known as Intraosseous infusion. It is designed for piercing bones and allowing for the flow of medication in times where IV is not able to be performed. Like in the midst of a battle or if a soldier has lost his or her arm. A technique for soldiers to learn IO is to pierce the sternum with a massive thick needle and yes it is as painful as it sounds. A medical harpoon was developed to treat heart valves with minimal invasive surgery by shooting the harpoon directly into the heart without cutting open the patient. Dart guns are sometimes used to medicate temperamental livestock or zoo animals without the veterinarians having to approach too closely

I have 2 life clerics. 1) a life cleric who wishes he could be a death cleric, but his faith's seminary didn't have that training. 2) A life cleric/Spore Druid multiclass who is all about both life and death.

What about healing someone with teas or a hot drink or a warm foot bath or a warm soups or using blankets as a old method of sweating it out healing items, While most medications are a mystery to most audiences, there are a few whose native source is more familiar. Willow bark as a precursor to aspirin, or bread mold as that of penicillin, are the usual examples; others, such as poppy extract for a sedative or foxglove extract for heart trouble, are more obscure, but still recognizable to viewers who take an interest. Therefore, in order to show that a primitive healer, herbalist, or apothecary is genuinely skilled, not ignorant or a fraud, they're shown administering one of these (very) few recognizable Real Life proto-drugs to patients in need. Never mind that a historical physician of the era may not know about the medicine in question, or be capable of extracting the active substance from its raw state in the proper dosage (foxglove is helpful in small amounts for heart trouble; in large amounts it causes heart failure), or that another little-known remedy from the period might be safer and more effective: it's always the treatment audiences will recognize that gets used. Can be an example of Viewers Are Geniuses, for the more obscure remedies. Subversion of Artistic License - Pharmacology. Does not apply to fictional medications or recreational stimulants, as use of such drugs does not demonstrate legitimate medical know-how. Use of an unspecified or fictitious cure-all herb falls under Healing Herb.

The Cleric benefits from playing it straight rather than re-flavouring. However for the more creative player here are a few ideas. The Alignment: Your behaviour determines your Subclass. This requires a discussion with the game master. The idea is at the end of a long rest, there is a chance that the game master might change your Subclass based on how you have been playing. The Cleric Subclasses for this build are a manifestation of your behaviour. If you are protecting people then Protection Domain. If you are healing others and preserving life then Life Domain. If you are fighting your way through problems then War Domain. The flavour for this wacky concept is, the Deities do not respond to you worshipping them. They respond to you living your life in accordance with their values. As such they only grant you their power if your behaviour aligns with their objectives. The Dancer: This Dancer has been learning techniques passed down from generation to generation. However one day as they are dancing magical effects start flowing from them. They have no idea what is going on. Slowly but surely throughout the campaign they uncover that the dances are techniques that communicate with the weave causing magical effects to blossom in the world. Any Subclass works. Just grab proficiency in Athletics, Acrobatics and Performance. Oddly enough no proficiency in Religion since they only know the dance routines but not their meaning. The Enchanter: This is your magical tatoo/magic item Cleric. You are Divinely inspired but your magic does not come from the Gods. Your magic is all done through runes and magical tattoos. You are a crafter who does not cast spells. Instead of a Holy Symbol, you have an array of enchanted items that enable you to "cast spells". Enchant your items. This a The Forge Domain Cleric. The Learned: In a setting where there are no deities, you learnt your magic in a way not to dissimilar to how a Wizard would. Whilst there are no deities in this setting, a combination of religious study and your faith powers your magical talents. Arcana Domain works here. The Pantheon: This Cleric does not follow one deity. They follow a whole Pantheon. You can divide up the spells in the main Cleric spell list and decide which deity they come from. This creates all kinds of interesting role play situations where you appease different deities. Any Domain works here. The Paragon: This is a Cleric who gets their power from legendary warriors. Go War Domain Cleric. Pick spells that aren't flashy in appearance but could be flavoured as combat techniques and inspiring other people. You are not actually casting spells with this character. Rather you are a Martial character. It also helps to get Medicine skill proficiency and Herbalism Kit to justify those healing spells. The Royal: In a world where Deities are King's and Queens, the Royal belongs to a Lineage. The Divine spells are gifted to members of the Divine Royal family. As such you are a sheltered privileged individual whose Divine powers cine from your bloodline. This could also be a Divine Sorcerer idea. The Power of Friendship: Your magic doesn't come from Deities but from friendship. That's right. You are that adventurer who keeps casting guidance. You are the Cleric who only thrives when the party is thriving. You have the very essence of friendship within you. A power that can slay any foe. The party is unstoppable. Persuasion and Insight are essential for all of the encouragement you're going to give.
