My response would've been: Oh right, since you are a wizard and therefore strictly bound to formulas/incantations, your incomprehensible blargh-gibberish has nothing to do with what that spell requires you to say. So you either now say the correct verbal component (which lets this spell be identifiable by other wizards) or the spell fails :)
@witchlock2897

@@faselfasel2864 defeats the entire purpose. An incantation can be literally fucking anything. You can assume their gibberish is a spell sure, but you cant assume their gibberish isnt a spell component if it doesnt give you anything to work with other then vocal components. Fucking over your players like this is just stupid. I bet you dont even have an idea of what the actually spell incantation would be, you just want to justify saying no in the worst way possible.

A wizard who's experienced enough to teach magic would recognize many people's styles of spellcasting too - especially with how many different spellcasters there are. So it wouldn't be unreasonable that that gibberish would register to her as his style of spellcasting in this case.

@@faselfasel2864 That would lessen the ability to actually distract someone because certain sentences wouldn’t work. Now, if you instead made it to where every time you Verbal Component a spell your voice is amplified or has an ethereal effect put onto it, that would allow one to identify it as a spell and still allow the caster to be versatile with a spell like Vicious Mockery and Silvery Barbs.
@faselfasel2864
@faselfasel2864 2 жыл бұрын
@@scribesorcerer4967 It wouldnt. Vicious mockery is strictly a bard spell and their verbal components would fall under a completely different casting paradigm. Silvery barbs on the other hand can be used by bards, sorcerers and wizards so that would make identifying the spell harder for people not of the same spellcasting class. (At least at my table). A sorcerer would distract different though than a wizard or a bard, but they are still bound by the casting paradigm of their class, which would make it identifiable.

Worst thing that ever happened to me was with Strixhaven: two senior students were demonstrating their abilities to impress the freshmen, and one of the players just went, "I bet he's the leader of an undead cult in the school." Nothing dangerous or ominous had even happened yet, and the only thing about the student that had been revealed was that he was very confident. And yet, for all practical purposes, the senior student in question was, in fact, leading a vampire cult.

This build could cast Silvery Barbs 11 times before a short rest, 3 more after the first short rest, and 2 more per short rest thereafter. It would also be able to negate advantage or disadvantage 3 times per long rest, and could choose the outcome of 2 rolls per long rest. Meanwhile, the warlock side uses Repelling Blast and Lance of Lethargy to potentially knock back a creature 20 feet AND reduce its move speed by 10 feet, while also having three tentacles per long rest to potentially reduce the movement speed by another 10 feet.

But now that the wizard has argued that a verbal component isn't obvious enough to counterspell, the next natural step is to make him regret getting pedantic. I mean, you can't tell Power Word Kill is a spell because it's just a word, right? And therefore it can't be counterspelled.

Best part is, the disadvantage can be stacked, since this spell doesn’t call it disadvantage and just says, “take the lower roll”. So 3 different people can just tell something to reroll 3 MORE TIMES. Then give 3 people advantage. It's debatable whether Silvery Barbs can be cast on the same roll multiple times, since the condition for its trigger is succeeding on a check. That trigger already occurred when the first one was cast. Rerolling and still succeeding is not a new success. I would argue that multiple people can do it at the same time for the first trigger, since reactions can occur simultaneously but be resolved sequentially, but you can't do it one after the other. You have to decide how many of you are casting it then and there.

Probably not, no : most people look up to him for Power Gaming He did his best, to make the most powerful character he could play (himself) I know it's not 1:1 - but what I'm getting at is, Power Gaming isn't bad. Power Gaming shows that you have an understanding of both your character, AND the world they exist in, and you building a Power Gaming, Min-Maxing masterpiece, is just them becoming the best version of themselves they intended to be, in that world. Stop thinking you have to stat/build your character like background Ninja #12,086 from Naruto (look, I know he's the guy that rushed Madara in the Great Ninja War, and that's like, really cooool, and really braaave... but he dead now, and nobody even Learned his name). For all you players that are like Wizard™, any spell that has any components (except if it would be just Material, but I don't think those exist) will be recognisable as magic, and might even be recognised for which it is by a spellcaster. Casting spells isn't like holding a conversation, it's like "commanding the weave". Imagine those 'echo' like effects you can use with recordings. The solutions to your troubles is subtle spell, even a caster won't recognise that someone casts silence where he is until he tries speaking and the words won't come out. Subtle spell is good, but since dm's often ignore spellcasting interactions on normal people, normal spells are almost ruled like subtle spell.

He multiclassed into fighter 2 for the second action (and has some homebrew for the reaction).

It was the Hold Person. Sole opponent cannot act, so multiple rounds of actions.

@@BattleSpew Still, he casts silvery barbs, then hold person, then the save and another silvery barbs (which is more than the 2nd level slots he had), after which he casts fireball. His turn couldn't have ended since there are two other players at the table and even assuming they do nothing, the opponent gets to make another hold person save at the end of its turn (since its turn is before the wizard). The only way the wizard would get to do that is if the opponent's turn was after the wizard, but the wizard was surprised, but in that case, he wouldn't be able to take reactions and therefore not be able to cast silvery barbs. In conclusion, too many spells, but who cares, its a skit.

Jacob I think it's amazing that you're able to still come up with fresh amazing content after your first hit video as the wizard. This was a lot of fun. Thank you for all your work. 👍🖐️
