I built the fire just as explained and was so excited on the cold rainy day to light it for my family. It lit up so beautifully....but I didn't see the part in the video (for dummies) to first make sure the damper was open. Next thing I was googling was smoke remediation..... Especially for the Christmas stockings that were already hung!

Nice! Looks good. Could additional tips : Prime your chimney - light a piece of paper or a candle and hold it up into your chimney, especially if your fireplace is cold. This will warm the cold air pocket trapped in your chimney and will prevent smoke and back feed into your home. It's a huge step but only takes a minute. Next, if you're having a tough time getting the fire to start, rather than use full round logs maybe try starting with the splits. The splits trend to dry much more quickly and might even have some loose fur out rough kindling on it that may help it catch. After your fire is moving and you have some good coals going, then you can start adding the full round logs. Finally, if you're having an extra hard time lighting your fire, maybe have some damp wood, and it doesn't want to catch, or you're getting a lot of smoke, try this. Look up "upside-down fire" and if course prime your chimney. This may use a bit more wood to start, but it requires much less maintenance to have going for a while. This method is also great if you have company and you want to dry a fire and be able to forget it for a while. Pro tips - after your first few starter logs start burning and start becoming a bit charcoal, knock them down and stir a bit. Get them nice and hot and add a couple logs. If you get a good hotbed going early you can run the fire almost down to nothing and easily throw a log on to immediately turn the temp up. Establish your coals. Also, I used to always sweep out and clean up my firebox almost after every burn. Don't do that. Just lift up your log holder and shovel everything to the middle (don't use the broom, they still may be very hot if you had a recent fire.) Stir it up so the grey and white ash fall to the bottom and the black charcoal wood becomes exposed With those nice black coals at the bottom, you'll quickly achieve a hot fire and be able to establish your hotbed early.

I've been putting my logs in the fireplace wrong🤔 I thought they went in the rack not across them....makes total sense to me now, for air flow.. thank you.

I tend to bundle up paper, which takes longer. Tearing strips of paper is the way to go. Great video. I actually refer back to this specific video if i have not lit a fireplace fire in a while. I still always tell myself, "Oh yeah! Tearing strips gets the fire going quicker!" Cheers from Texas!

If you're still having trouble, buy yourself a little $15 propane torch at Walmart. I cut my own firewood and have a very hard time finding anything dry, so the torch allows me to heat the firewood significantly to where the kindling doesn't burn out before the logs catch fire.

I melt up wax and mix it with sawdust. Then I scoop it into a forming mold I made out of wood and compress it into 3/4" x "3/4" disks. I make a gallon size zip-lock bag of them in about 30 minutes. When I light my fireplace, I put 3 or 4 of these disks between the logs and light them with my lighter. I use no newspaper or kindling and I get a roaring fire every time.

I’ve been using the “Upside Down Fire” method, which is pretty easy, but I might give this a try.

I would add to this guy's advice, start with a clean fireplace. There was already so much ash in his from previous fires, this new fire had no place to go. Hot ash spilling everywhere is a dangerous situation. I also melt leftover candles and use the wax to make fire starters. There might be videos to show how to do that that recommend using dryer lint. If you have pets, don't do it! The hair from the pets that is in the lint will stink to high heaven! I use clean cotton balls, dip them in wax, and stick all that inside a toilet paper tube. Just my way of recycling the tubes which light easily, then the wax and cotton burn hot enough to light the wood.

I think people who find it hard to start a fire will eventually figure it out (honestly, I go the easy route and just slap a small "StarterLogg" underneath of three stacked logs). But what is incredibly important is to understand air flow. You can spend an hour getting a fire going and that's great fun for anyone watching, but if you haven't opened the vent (in the chimney or in the front of your insert if you have one) so that the smokes is sucked up and out of the chimney, then you are going to fill your house with smoke and THATS not funny. Start with a very small fire if this is your first time. Slowly open and close the doors (if you have them) to see how it effects the fire. Need to fan the fire some to get a new log going? Just open the doors a crack and you can create an inferno in no time.

@Tarstarkaseff try opening the front door. What's up is that your chimney can't breath because there is no air coming into your house, so open the door at the beginning. Once it heats up it should create its own natural draw and you can shut the food.

This newspaper method might be the best cheapest method. I've seen people suggest you buy all kinds of specialty tools and synthetic logs for starting a fire. At that point, I might as well just save the money and use the heater.

Very important, make sure to have your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year. The creosote that build up can otherwise easily start a chimney fire!

I'd start with a couple of thicker pieces of kindling and bridge the gap between the grates and then stack it log cabin style from there. Another option would be to get a little square of steel cloth from the hardware store that your could bridge the gap with and stack your kindling on that.
