@Gabster1 Great video for the folks unsure of how these modules work together. I'm building a transport only streamer to use with my NOS R2R tube Dac. I think I went overboard on the power side of things. I had custom shielded and potted transformers wound. Ordered 6 300F Ultracaps. and built 4 AMB Sigma 11 single rail power supplies. My Ian Canada stack is built with a StationPi, ConditionerPi, Pi4, FiFoPi ma, Transport AES, MonitorPi, Official Pi 7" touch screen running Volumio. I suppose it is my personal interpretation of your streamer dac.

Built it! Just finished it. Thank you so much for this video! A lot of back and forth with the video and Ian's manuals, double checking myself. No shielding or extra grounding, not sure if it is necessary though I might at least add these features as not that hard. I know there is all kinds of unpredictable placebo stuff that could be affecting my experience but wow, so far this thing, as ugly as it is, just completely smokes my other dacs. Suddenly more palpable space, texture, details. Using Roon. Will be testing across a broad array of speaker/amp combinations.

Thank you for your efforts and time spent to bring more people closer to good quality audio! For years, I am using RP as streamer and mamboberry (ess) dac, with simple i2s connection between. Everything is cleanly built with separate high quality power supplies, good filtering and physical separation between ps, rp, dac and preamp. I was avoiding reclocking by always using just i2s interconnection. Some experienced people suggested to me that it is better to have cleanly built i2s than loosely built reclocking. Would I benefit by switching i2s to reclocked signal as you are using? Thank you!
@Gabster1

Keep your dac as is as a reference and build another one like the D6 here with Ian’s parts and compare this way you can hear the difference If you don’t want to spend a lot of money build a protodac a see if you like it better. It is important not to alter your existing setup till you find one you like better.

Thank you for your content! You inspired me to start learning about DIY and getting interested in DACs and system sound quality. I have couple of questions: So it’s DAC or Streamer? Or both? If both: how it’s switch from one mode to another? And what is the delay in DAC mode? Is it possible to watch video without delays in DAC mode? For example in one time I want listen tidal from Rasberry and ROON, but another time want just watch KZfaq on PC and have sound from a DAC - is it possible?
@Gabster1
@Gabster1 9 ай бұрын
It is both Streamer/Dac in this setup the dac receives a re-clocked signal from the PI that acts as a Roon endpoint to switch to another input you would need a receiver pi board added. Also Ian has a new DDC board coming for more coplex setup See Ian's post about that www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/asynchronous-i2s-fifo-project-an-ultimate-weapon-to-fight-the-jitter.192465/post-7488536 I suggest starting simple then add later.

Looks very interesting, Thanks for this video. I am planning on buying this unit (with accusilicon clocks, nog too expensive and I hope it Will improve the sound). Now is my question, how does this sound compares to other dac’s (you have listened to) . I know this is a difficult question but im really eager to know since I already have a micromega mydac and my father a Chord qutest . Another Thing i’d like to know if I can replace the rather expensive ifi power with cheaper power supply’s without a significant löss in sound quality? Thansks in advance

Sound compares well with Dacs in the 5 to 10000 specially if you have the best shielding and power supplies For Cheaper psu you can try the cheap 5$ eBay psu board I reviewed see my other video on it It would be better the a ifi you can use a old linear transformer You would need a few and not be afraid of soldering a bit. Watch not to short or reverse polarity could be expensive mistakes. Have fun :)

Really like the build, thank you for sharing. One question, my pre amp amp does not have balanced inputs. Ian says that the rca outputs of this DAC should only be used for testing. Can you confirm that? Are there other options in case someone does not have balanced audio input?
@Gabster1
@Gabster1 9 ай бұрын
I think you are fine specially if you have descent short interconnection. There is a dual opa861 to create a true balanced design so you loose a tiny bit on that. I recall trying it on a single ended tube amp and sounded good. You can also try transformers and see if it is better for you but they are close.

The protodac is more of a Vintage sound probably the best dac value specially teamed with a fifo Q7 The Dual mono is a bit more refined, with a good I/V stage it is very good. but that requires more power supplies.

Please be careful with the copper shielding behind the MonitorPi Pro! I think mine created a short between the GPIO pins behind the MonitorPi and a tiny bit of smoke came out from the back of the FifoPiQ7 (i think it was that board, but not sure). So instead I covered my copper shielding with electrical tape. The dac still works.

I use the toslink digital out from the Sony to a very cheap Prozor dac to the Sansui. I will be adding a CD player soon. As I am using the vintage receiver I don't have remote volume control. Is it possible to add this to the Flagship DAC, and is my system resolving enough to benefit from this DAC?

If I can be honest your biggest upgrade will be from using a high resolution streaming service or a good cd player. There is a world of difference between KZfaq music /spotify and a high resolution system like a cd player record player Tidal and Quobuz Your amp and speakers are good A Dac like this or a cdplayer/ record player will benefit you For the Dac you will need a Tidal Or Quobus suscription and Roon or Volumio …. Hi Gabster, I just looked at all of the components for the build (including tax in Quebec) and it comes to $1,338.00 CDN give or take a few bucks and this is not including any options. The 3 Ifi power supplys really kill the price point as they alone are $375 (tax in). Ian Audio is $700 CDN (delivered) for the 94a kit. The raspberry pi and all of the little extras makeup the rest of the cost. Given that the Ifi power supplys are so expensive might it be less expensive to use the upgraded power supply you mentioned?

The IFI is good for People that have No or very limited DIY experience. If you have some knowledge I would use 2 or 3 of the Cheap ebay regulator 5$ (must replace the Potetiometer) each and some old Transformers you may have around kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mOCIotyh0ry5pac.htmlsi=OFkyF1X6wCEDr_Up You need to be careful not to fry your expensive boards also need 4v higher then intended so a 9V transformer DC or AC is Ideal or pay the same $ and use the Linear Pi reg by Ian. if yo have limited DIY experience start with the Protodac Cheap and inexpesive then Build the D6 You may also want to try The MIni IP kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o5aVprinu9udh2w.htmlsi=kc9p9c4FhjzCau5J start without Q7 then with. The journey is as rewarding as the results Have fun If you build it send me a few Pics a and a short story would love to share your results on the Chanel.

You don't protect your parts from electrostatic discharge?

They are very resilient just treat them nicely. I don't live in a dry place I live by the water so not a lot of electrostatic charges. I used to live in Ottawa so dry in the winter you can see sparks every time you rub your feet on a carpet. If you live in a very dry place then you should worry.

I don't understand why Ian Canada makes it so hard to order. BTW, when you said this DAC compares to dacs $5K plus, have you got some names? say a Venus or Terminator?
@Gabster1
@Gabster1 8 ай бұрын
As good as the terminator if not better Never heard Venus rarely people buy that one Leaps ahead of the Pontus It is so easy just download the xls form fill and mail Bear in mind he is a solo person doing it all Not a huge company let’s keep it that way for the benefits of the diy community So many companies with 20000$ dacs now often cost 2000$ to build if not a lot less. On the other hand there are a lot of dacs out there around the 2k that sound very descent so don’t expect major differences just small ones you need a very resolving system to hear them. So spend your money on speakers and preamp/ amp first. Have fun
