Building a router? But why though? Well, you'll need either a Linux or BSD based router for ideas for content we have in the future. Be sure you are subscribed to the linux channel -- / teklinux -- as these will be info and tutorials for the networking enthusiasts among you.
Even if you aren't an enthusiast, pfSense is an incredible piece of software based on freeBSD in that it will give you enterprise router/firewall features for free and through an easy-to-use and very stable web gui.
This is a quick 20-minute guide on getting up and running with pfsense, but don't be afraid to explore. Do you already have a slick pfsense setup? Share it with us in the forums at forum.level1techs.com
We'll see you there!
Want to buy a pfSense router? Store here:
store.pfsense.org/SG-2440/?re...
17:03 : Apologies for the international incident caused by the misspelling of "Russian" lol. We'll be more diligent in the future!

I love pfSense, I had used ClearOS (aka ClarkConnect) since 2004 till this year. pfSense is so easy to use and does everything I need. My setup is quite simple, cable modem, pfSense system, unmanaged switch and a wireless router. The modem, switch and wireless router are all setup in some sort of "dumb" mode, the unmanaged switch has no settings at all, the wireless router is set to access point, and the modem has no settings. Everything is controlled by pfSense, port forwarding, DHCP, firewall, content filter... everything for your network in one place. My favorite feature, IP address by MAC, I didn't list your MAC then you get no IP. I live in a townhome and when my ClearOS machine was list an IP with an unknown MAC I ended switching to psSense. Yes, ClearOS can do that, but ClearOS uses command line for more technical setups, pfSense is way easier.

I'm so glad to see you producing content, Wendell. I've been a huge fan of yours ever since the original PfSense router video (I think that's when I first found Tek Syndicate). I think I was watching an older Hak5 pfsense video when I saw a the Tek Syndicate video in the "recommendations" section, and was amazed that it had like 60k views while the hak5 video only had a few thousand. I was super skeptical at first, and was frantically fact-checking everything you were saying, and every darn time you were 100% correct. I did the same fact-checking throughout some of The Tek videos and realized that you actually knew what you were talking about. Honestly, I thought the channel was yours initially, and just had a front-man as a host for the program because it made things easier, or your wished to remain anonymous, etc., but over time I just couldn't watch the videos without you in them. I seriously cannot express how happy I am to have you producing content on your own channel, of stuff other than gaming, graphics cards, and benchmarks, and "Build a $2600 rig!" videos, but rather producing content which helps the next generation, myself included, understand the versatility of today's tech. I'm not exactly financially stable right now, but you have my word that I'll be donating to the Patreon as soon as I get my finances in order. Thanks for sticking around for the community Wendell, and the rest of the L1 team. (P.S. Would love to see some videos with Darren Kitchen or Samy Kamkar discussing security, or possibly guest-hosting DTNS with Tom Merrit. Darren [hak5] and Samy have smaller youtube audiences, but have made serious contributions in the realm of security. Tom Merrit is also a great host, and brings on technical experts to explain the politics of the "tech world", and has brings a lot to the table in terms of differing opinions and interesting discussion.)

Wendell - please set the shutter speed on your camera to 1/(frame rate * 2) or as close you can get - e.g. if shooting at 30fps use 1/60. It will make the video appear less "jerky" and more natural to the viewer. Otherwise, enjoying the content!

I don't usually post in comments anywhere but I really enjoyed Wendells time from Tek Syndicate. My Current PFSense setup - i5-3470 - 16GB RAM - 128GB SSD - 2 Dual Port Intel NIC's WAN setup with PPPoE and a static IP. I have a fiber connection to the house with 250Mbps Down and 100Mbps - Download speeds improved dramatically and I can download games and play or have multiple streams going and still playing games and there is not a single issue with the connection. The plugins are a must especially Snort, Web Caching and the Proxy services available. I then use a Asus AC router in AP mode for Wireless in the house. I will never move away from this sort of setup. Fast and provides a never ending learning pool. Thanks very much for continuing to put this sort of content out there, if not for folks like you I would never learn anything new. :-)

AeRiaL BTW, the machine didn't cost me a dime, it was headed for the dumpster. I threw four spare PCI NICS (Only use two at the moment), disconnected the CD-ROM and used the small PATA hard drive to hold the OS for boot and let it ride. It runs nice and quite in my office next to my file server now. BTW, it only has 1GB of ram but looking at the stats it only ever really uses 375MB at any given time.

Hmm, I have a Pentium 4 Socket 478 PC running XP Pro SP3 but only has 256MB SDRAM. I guess I could put in some PCI NICs and more RAM then it'll be fine to go after I put Pfsense on it? It only has 100mbit ethernet if that's an issue but my peak dl is like 2.1mb/s (whatever that converts to in mbits), so I believe that will be fast enough.

An easy way to take the plunge is to install pfsense on a laptop you seldom use (You can install it along side Windows fairly easily if you know anything about disk partitioning), then just plugging a USB to Ethernet adapter to serve as your second interface. This is not the route (no pun intended) to go if you're looking for performance as USB simply isn't cut out for intense networking, but it works fabulously on a small network. Also, make sure there is a FreeBSD driver available for you model of adapter as not all of them are supported: www.freebsd.org/releases/8.1R/hardware.html#ETHERNET

Taylor Pinkham That's actually a worthwile idea, and a laptop will consume much less energy. Still, I think something like an Intel NUC is much more suited, and with energy cost you will reach break even after mostly 2 years.

Fantastic Video!!! I've been thinking about a home made router for a while and now I can do it. Look forward to future videos especially configuring separate wireless and lan. Snort and the other intrusion detection will be most appreciated as well. Finally a video on how to check that you have configured everything properly so that nothing is left wide open accidentally. Thanks.

Well now I just feel like a dumbass for getting that Linksys WRT1900ACS when I have a low power AMD A4 box literally doing nothing.

if you want then you could try to use your router as a wireless accesspoint for a pfsense box

Use your old routers as access points. Then you get all the BSD goodness with pfSense.

^ literally what they said. My old AC router is just a plain access point now, might upgrade to something better later.

The problem I have is I already have an ASUS N66U and linksys E1200 acting as APs for full house and garage coverage. To run pfsense on more hardware I would be fixing something not broken instead of being frugal, which was why I was calling myself a dumbass here. I've already spent the money instead of recycling a machine. Relegating a higher end linksys to AP only duty also seems like a waste of power. Welp, theres always plenty of headless server projects I can use it for.

pfsense is a firewall application there is no modem involved in this build , you need 2 NICs in your "router"-pc / raspberryPi / SoC / whatever. and then it will just do one thing: filter packages the way you configure it. the modem is whatever you use now for connecting to your ISP. be it Cable or ADSL or sth else. network schematic wise the modem comes BEFORE the pfsense appliance. so between WAN interface of pfsense and your ISP. you do not need to change your modem nor do you need a specifically "decent" modem to implement a pfsense gateway in your network. if anything pfsense can help alleviate stress on even the shittiest modems through traffic normalization and shaping, and even through truncating unneeded packets.
