Build Basalt Rock Columns for your Tabletop Game (2021) GameSmith S01E033
In this tutorial video, TheGameSmith presents a simple method for building basalt rock columns. Basalt rock columns are a strange and unique natural rock formation that we couldn’t resist trying to replicate for the game table. Since the primary building material is hexagonal wood pencils, the rock formations are very inexpensive to build. Additionally, because of the versatility of the sizes and shapes of formations that crafters can build, they are perfect for games such as Warhammer 40K, Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, and many other games that use 28mm scale miniatures.
Whether you are an expert or novice tabletop builder this DIY tutorial will show crafters how they can create great scatter terrain with little or no experience and will hopefully give veteran crafters a few new ideas.
This tutorial is based on the use of simple and cheap materials with a focus on the best practices and tools for creating your own tabletop terrain. With just a few supplies and a few basic crafting techniques any tabletop crafter can create a great variety of basalt rock column scatter terrain that can be used hide an ambush, break sight lines, or impede movement through the area.
From all of us here at TheGameSmith, we hope you find this scatter terrain video informative and helpful. We’ll see you at the table!

We have a lot of eraser heads left over from this build. Any suggestions for what we could make with all those erasers?

I grabbed a bunch of those pencils for the erasers to make barrels for Gaslands. I actually had this idea of what to actually do with the pencils LOL.

Wow! These even look cool when they are just base coated with black. I have a zillion pencils from school that would be perfect for this.

Great minds think alike! I had a box of old broken pencils that I used in the middle of the build.

Very creative use of pencils. I was just at "Devils Postpile" in Mammoth California last summer. You nailed the look!!!

Very cool. I'm so into geology that I'd lose my mind being at a place like that.

The ferrule on the end of the pencil can make excellent steel barrels for industrial and scifi terrain.

That's really clever. Now I'm trying to rack my mind to see if I've ever seen any pencil sized hexagonal columns of plastic or cast off material in any industrial processes that would be even more economic than pencils.

I found some hexagonal PVC pipes online, but they were expensive. The pencils were $1.25 (CAN) per pack of 24 pencils at Dollar Tree.

Really nice build. I make have to give these a go. I think I'd create more of a rock face, coming out of the earth look, like your source images. Or both. Both is good

Second project i've seen about these basalt columns from pencils, the other was bases by Jay from Eons of Battle and i too thought this had potential for actual terrain pieces, looks better than i expected even when just primed :D

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll check out the vid since I wasn't even aware that anyone else had thought of it. There's bound to be creative overlap.

Absolutely! These structures just beg to go to our tabletops! :D Here's the vid, clearly similar inspiration but he went in a different direction, less realistic and more "rule of cool" (and of course, smaller, it's bases :P) : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/asyGerGWx9O9kqM.html

Thanks for the link. I've been using these terrain pieces on my Star Wars game and my players were terrified by the speed bike race through the column formations.

Bashing pencils with a rock...my arm hurt. Cutting them all up into bits...no way this is worth the effort. Gluing them to the base, not even primed yet and I love them. I think I just have to learn to trust that these videos will never lead me astray!
