It been really hot in California and my sandals (Flip Flops) have just about given up the ghost. I'm making some new DIY ones out of a salvaged anti-fatigue mat, an adhesive traction pad, and some leather remnants.

OMG, I just had a flashback to my late father, who used to do this sort of thing all the time! In fact, he made his own orthopedic shoe inserts by casting his feet in plaster, and using his own "proprietary" (hahahaha...) mix of ground cork and silicone caulking! Add a covering of scrap leather, and VOILA! Custom inserts! :-) God, I miss him...

Nice design and they look very comfortable. My only criticism or advice to those making something similar and to the video maker would be that the strap would soon stretch out and become too loose because there was no stitching added. Stitching along the sides of the foot strap holds and secures the shape and size of the strap and prevents it from stretching, which it most definitely will do.
@TabLeft
@TabLeft 6 жыл бұрын
Dubmurphy well I've owned a lot of leather sandals and I've been wearing these frequently for nearly a year and I never had any of them (or these) show any sign of stretching to any noticeable degree. But if you make some I would encourage you to experiment.

Denise Martinez I actually wanted to use recycled tire but couldn’t find any. Retread tires on semis often loose the outer coat and can be found on the roadways but I looked and looked and couldn’t find any even though I see them all the time when I’m not looking

@@TabLeft isn't that the way it is? When were searching don't find anything. We purchased a property that had a bunch so we lucked out. You might could hit up some recycling centers.. Sometimes they give them away. It would be worth a shot. Good luck with that. Blessings.

They turned out nice. I wonder how that foam will hold up. I guess only time will tell, huh?
@TabLeft
@TabLeft 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah we will have to see, i think they will be as good if not better than the stuff that sandals are normally made from. They are pretty heavy duty floor mats from an old karate school. these are designed to take some abuse (and have) not the cheapo harbor freight variety.
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 7 жыл бұрын
Cool, and I think the stuff you put on the bottom should really preserve the foam any way. What does heat sealing do to it, other than making it look better? Just closes up some of the pores in the foam?
@TabLeft
@TabLeft 7 жыл бұрын
+Bruce A. Ulrich yeah it closed the pores so they won't trap dirt and it will absorb less moisture etc if I step in a puddle or something. Plus it does look nicer

James Ong the bottom was a self adhesive rubber safety mat (harbor freight item 98858) the plan was to use old tire tread but I couldn’t find any on short notice the leather was all from leather remnants packs from hobby lobby. The glue used was Barge cement. The only other material was bit of black nylon cord.
