As far as I know, there are no videos on KZfaq about building a magnetic chuck based on permanent magnets. Apparently the traditional build is too demanding for a home shop. In the KZfaq videos I only see transformers used in big heavy bulky electromagnetic chucks. I want something smaller, nicer and more refined. Suitable for a mini mill and based on neodymium magnets. Here's the first part of an attempt to do so. After some extra research I really start building the vise, applying some simple tests halfway through the build.
Music: Goldberg variations Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 988)

Well done. I have thought and pondered this for decades but never tried it because no big machines. Now I have a bigger urge tobbuy a mill or surface grinder. Obviously thumb up & subscribed.

Second last Goldberg Variation! Nice. Good work on the chuck. Two camps one on either end to shift the magnets? I will watch and see. Mark

Hi Mark. No clamps, it will be a scotch yoke.

nice project. think i might have based the design arround dowel pins instead of having to make all those cylinders! :D

Estimado señor Michel fantástico trabajo, estoy deseando empezar a construir una mesa como la suya, ¿podría decirme dónde compro el teflón autoadhesivo? Muchas gracias

You could give this link a try: armastore.eu/self-adhesive-teflon-sheet-a4-x-0-25 But remember, I didn't use the teflon after all. See the video.

Is the layer of steel rods between the magnet layer and the item to be held by the chuck? Great video!! Tom

Michel, On your video replacing the plain bearings on a Proxton apron with ball bearings, it looked like you machined 19mm diameter all the way through. I thought it would be only 5mm deep each side ? If you can remember could you please clarify for me.
@Michel-Uphoff
@Michel-Uphoff Жыл бұрын
No, not all the way through. I drilled two holes of 5 mm deep and two of 5 mm plus the existing depth of I thought 3 mm, you have to check that extra depth yourself because I don't remember.

Have you seen the first part, prototyping? If so, which principles would you like to see better explained?

@@Michel-Uphoff Sorry. I thought part 1 would explain. What was the explanation called prototyping? I've played with the concept of turning mag fields on and off so I'm very interested in what you've done. I just found it, but seems it is called part 1 also.
@Michel-Uphoff

Yes, sorry. Messed up the titles somehow. Corrected that. In fact, I don't turn magnetic fields on and off. That is not possible with a permanent magnet. But I do send the field lines through a movable iron medium to the location where I want them.

@@Michel-Uphoff thanks. I realize we are not turning the magnets off. It is a convenient way to describe the action but you are more correct. I really appreciate what you have done and plan some more experiments of my own.
