A build of Daily Magic Games' Quests of Valeria - the third game in the Valeria series. This build is assembled from the free preview PnP files DMG released along with their Kickstarter campaign, which at time of writing has just about two days left on the clock:

Hi! Great work! What printer do you using? Is there any chance to do cards with same quality with ink printer?

Nice video, I just have a couple questions. What is the black card that you're using? What is the weight of the paper is it 65lb? What kind of glue did you use to stick the page onto the black paper?

Very nice video may I know what is your file format for printing CMYK or RGB..? which one you most recommended..?
@DiningTablePrintPlay
@DiningTablePrintPlay 5 жыл бұрын
Printers always print in CMYK - if you try and print an RGB file, it will be automatically converted to CMYK in the printer (or probably the printer driver software, really) before it prints - because that's what colour ink/toner the printer has. So it seems like it should be logical that CMYK is a better source file format. However! If you have an RGB file, then you're almost certainly better off printing from that RGB file directly than converting it to CMYK first. The problem is that there's not a one-to-one match between the set of colours available in CMYK and the set of colours available in RGB, so it's inevitable that some colours get changed as you convert. If you let your printer driver do it, then that conversion will be done by software that knows how the printer works and how best to convert the image to print on that printer - if you convert it yourself before printing, then that conversion will be done completely ignorant of this information, and probably you'll end up with a slightly dull-looking print because you used a generic colour space conversion. If you're creating entirely new graphics yourself for use with your home printer, you're probably still better off using RGB. It's harder to work with CMYK colours in a lot of graphics packages - even Adobe's professional-level software often doesn't offer all of its features to CMYK colours (Photoshop blending modes, for example) and unless you're used to working with them, CMYK colour spaces can seem a bit weird compared to RGB - because RGB is additive colour and CMYK is subtractive colour. My advice would normally be to stick to RGB unless you already know that CMYK is a better option for the specific task you're doing.

I have a question about the glue. How long does the glue hold these cards together? Are they gonna fall apart like 3 years from now or it depends on the glue quality? I am currently trying to create Glory to Rome (black box edition) cards and player boards at home, and your method seems super promising; however, I lack the basic tools to start off, and I still in the process of evaluation whether is it even worth creating these cards or not. If you have some tips apart from what you have already said in the videos, would be very much appreciated. Your videos are awesome, and I like how patiently you take the time to explain every nuances that might come up while making cards, tokens or using inkscape. Wish you the best!

Hello, great job, i m wondering, what did you use at 3:03, was it a kind of varnish something?
@DiningTablePrintPlay
@DiningTablePrintPlay 6 жыл бұрын
Berk Püral It is indeed a varnish - an acrylic lacquer intended for cars, but I've found it works wonders for PnP. Without it, the toner from the laser printer tends to chip off along cut lines and creases, but with the lacquer (which slightly dissolves the toner and sinks it into the paper) it's much more durable.

Great video! Keep up the awesome work. Would you have the edited card files available?
@DiningTablePrintPlay

I don't have them uploaded anywhere - I'll ask Daily Magic Games if they're OK with me doing so, but I wouldn't hold my breath - DMG are more generous than many about it, but most publishers put PnP files up during KickStarter campaigns just to draw interest to the campaign prior to publication.

@@robinsonferrari I'm not sure what you mean - to the best of my knowledge DMG is still selling the PnP files for this game? e.g. www.pnparcade.com/products/quests-of-valeria

@@DiningTablePrintPlay Actually, I don't know if this is an official site. The file is shared at: www.kickstarter.com/projects/dailymagicgames/quests-of-valeria [Click Download PnP and Rules] Anyway, I'm using all he taught on how to lay out a card (thank you very much for this).

@@robinsonferrari Ah, I see - that's the file that I built the one I used in the video from in the first place, as it happens! I did send an email to DMG a while ago asking if they were OK with me sharing the modified one, but I never received a reply, so I don't feel particularly comfortable sharing it, I'm afraid.

I think the reply to the question below got lost when I moved the channel from a personal-account to a channel account. At the time this video was shot, I was using a Xerox Phaser 6125N laser printer, which was Xerox's affordable home colour laser offering when I bought it nearly a decade ago. Third-party toner was readily available so it was cheap to run, and it made pretty good colour prints. They don't sell that model any more, but I believe the Phaser 6510 is the successor model. Personally, I've since replaced it with a Xerox Phaser 6600DN, which is a larger, higher-capacity office-sized machine that does slightly better prints and has a couple of other neat features like full duplex. It's certainly _possible_ to get similar-quality prints out of a good quality inkjet photo printer - possibly better quality, even! - but inkjets are much more variable in quality (and the cheap end particularly shoddy, print-quality-wise) and the particular paper you use has much more of an effect on the print quality with an inkjet, because inkjets squirt actual liquid ink onto the page which will soak into the paper, while lasers melt a thin layer of coloured plastic to the surface so the composition of the paper makes less of a difference.

Дружище, что за машинка для стрижки углов и черный картон на который ты наклеивал карты?
@DiningTablePrintPlay
@DiningTablePrintPlay 3 жыл бұрын
The black card is just regular cardstock. It's 120gsm, and it's black so you can't see through the cards if you hold them up to the light. The corner clipper is an Oregon Laminations 3mm corner rounder. It's pretty expensive, unfortunately, but it does a really good job.

@DiningTablePrintPlay
@DiningTablePrintPlay 3 жыл бұрын
The spray is acrylic lacquer - it's a varnish to protect the printing a bit, and it also makes the cards slide against each other a bit better. The one I use is sold to spray over car paint. You can get the same stuff from hobby shops or miniature wargames shops, but the acrylic car lacquer is the same and it's much cheaper. ;-)
