Build Small Tent in Big Tent: Snowmobile in tent.

This is the coldest night I've ever spent at the tent. It's -38 C. I am slowly progressing towards my goal to have a cozy winter paradise in the wild. I am building a small tent frame in the warmth of my big tent.

I usually prepare my starter wood at home in the warmth of my garage. That way in nights like that one, it only takes me about 2 minutes to start the fire. Try it one day and see if you like it. Great video 👍.

Here are a couple of "projects" for you to think about: 1. Line the tent with a secondary layer of old blankets & mylar. 2. Install a baffle in the stove which will keep more of the heat in the box and less will escape up the chimney. 3. Place brick or concrete blocks around the stove to act as a heat sink and let it re-radiate heat through the night. 4. Put a thermal fan on the stove top to circulate the heat around the tent effectively. 5. Install a chimney protector around the chimney where it passes through the jack. It doesn't appear you have a complete seal there and you are losing some heat through the gap. 6. Install a combustion air pipe from the outside to the face of the stove. This will lessen the drafts, especially at the perimeter bottoms and the door.

Hi Jay, I do enjoy your videos, they remind me of the old days when I lived in a wall tent here in Alaska. In my 72 years, I have done a lot and suffered the freezing temps. I noticed throughout this video, you keep the damper fully open. That;s fine when you are starting a fire. When it flames up close your damper 3/4 closed and your fire regulator below 1/4 open. This way you are not losing most of your heat up the stovepipe. In the Summer, take your pallets outside to completely dry. Sandy M had a great idea and that is to build a loft with the pallets where it will be hotter than just above ground. Put pallet lofts in the search engine it you will learn how to do it. I hope I'm not annoying you with these suggestions but, in 72 years, I have seen a lot and done a lot and want to pass my experiences on to you. Thanks for sharing your outdoor life with us.

I once wanted a Four Post Bed, you know the kind with Curtains hanging down the side and overtop. But I couldn't afford it, so I got a self supporting Tent and placed it on My Bed. My Mother thought it particularly weird but I was happy with it and that all that really matters, isn't it? Being happy about whatever you yourself does.

So awesome to see you given'er again in the Double Tent. I thought of a suggestion as I was watching. I hope it is welcome. At our house we have wood stove too, I have the stove top covered in flat bricks which hold the heat for much longer than metal does. This may add some extension on to the time the stove holds its heat like Thermal Energy Storage. It also creates a place of differential heat to keep things warm if you desire, like water or food.

You need to hang a reflective tarp right behind you, to radiate the heat to your back. A piece of blue board behind you and under your cot would help a little too. Just some cheap ideas that might help until you get everything figured out.

Hi Jay, your a trooper. That is cold for sure but loved the video. An idea for your restroom, when we deer hunted the U P we stayed in a tent and used a small deer blind with a propane heater for the restroom. Dug a deep hole and used a portable potty, cover with the dug dirt as necessary. Worked very well and you didn't freeze in the process and it was away from your living quarters.

We had some insulation Blankets, as I remember they were 16' by 16' when I was in bridge construction they were to protect the concrete in Cold Weather, I would think that they wouldn't be too expensive and you could drape them over the pipe and then put the tent on them, it would make that tent immeasurably easier to heat.

It sounds like you're pulling radiation heat from the stove instead of convectional heat. It might be useful to get something reflective like tin foil covered cardboard to help reflect some of that heat to your back side while sleeping
@dirtydiesel_mk7728
@dirtydiesel_mk7728 4 жыл бұрын
Something like this would be easy to bring in. It's reflective both sides and has an insulated core. This will help reflect the heat and add much needed insulation. States its Class 1 fire rated. That space behind and above the stove is just sucking the heat away. Consider hanging moving blankets as insulation in areas away from the stove. www.amazon.com/SmartSHIELD-AD-5-Reflective-Insulation-Radiant/dp/B00ZNKMM8K

When you are in the cold, in a tent, after hard work, food taste so good. Sleeping in a boat is the same thing. I had 3 Hurricane lamps to my back. Just enough to get the chill out.... but still cold. -80° what is the coldest I’ve ever been in and I do not wish to do it again. The actual temperature is unknown because the 80 something degrees was quite a ways away. The wind I forgot how fast it was, but it was sufficient. I have frostbite on my feet and my hands. Quite a bit of enthusiasm for cold weather was diminished.

Look into a "Gasifier" wood stove when you seek a replacement. It re-burns the exhaust gasses from the wood fire, reducing the amount of smoke, and increases heat output from the stove. Right now you are blowing near 50% of the energy from burning the wood, out the chimney.

As I watch your rice meal I might add I keep a small pair of shears for cooking in my mess kit. So when you toss the chicken into the rice in a few quick actions you get perfect bite-sized morsels. Also in many cases, you reduce the risk of knife-related accidents in the bush. A silly little tip. You might try a roll of Reflectix radiant barrier. Some on the cot and some on the opposite wall. The stuff is cheap reusable and I even make pot cozys to keep food warm longer.

Unless you find that you REALLY need the room, keep the small tent in the large tent!! Your heat in the small tent will add some heat to the large tent for the snowmobile - and a potty if you add. But the large tent will ALSO provide an additional buffer to the cold outdoors, resulting in additional heat retention within the little tent. That’s a win-win!!

Hey from warm Vancouver island, I used to put a Big tarp over the machines and kept the generator with it, I have a small generator and with it running it kept the quad and side-by-side toasty. In the tent is great too but the smell of gasoline isn't a good idea.
