This is part 2 of a two part build series using the Zebrawood DIY telecaster style kit from Badcat Instruments.
You can see part 1 here: • Fixing everything WRON...
my original review of the kit: • Zebrawood Tele DIY kit...
In this video we do the fretwork and wiring. The wiring is complex, featuring a 5 way pickup selector, plus push/pull pots for in/out of phase (middle pickup) and bridge pickup bypass (blower switch). This allows for 10 unique tones!
Purchase a wiring diagram here: www.gunsandguitars.net/wiring...
Here are the parts I used for this build:
Badcat Instruments zebrawood tele style DIY kit: amzn.to/30i4Thj
Baroque fret file: amzn.to/3IYNOtY
Middle humbucker pickup: amzn.to/3sd8mJh
Bridge humbucker pickup: amzn.to/33GrghB
Push/pull 500k pots: amzn.to/3q9b8wy
5 way selector switch: amzn.to/3q5cYP8

Wouldn’t the problem be solved if you put the neck PU in the middle position and just find a new neck PU with the same polarity as the bridge PU (or reverse it when installing)?

That reminds me of my crazy 80's guitar, it has 3 push-pull pots, one of them is to switch the middle coil phase, and the other two are coil spitting for each pickup. My god, I absolutely love playing with out of phase, the tone is great. Also I am impressed with the finish of this guitar so much. I love that natural wood look. The tone is wonderful and versatile.

Dan, you might have saved me some money! I have been flirting with the idea of getting the Strat version of the zebra wood guitar. I liked its looks right away. Trouble is that the best picture in the universe can't show you what the zebra wood will FEEL LIKE! I don't have any guitars that feel "plasticky" and don't want any. Oh, I have a really bad case of GAS going on right now, but I think that I'm now down one option. That's progress. After all, you did things to your guitar that I'm not THINKING about doing to mine and still wound up with a feel that you don't like. I tend not to be so critical, or maybe I just don't play well enough to bump against the limitations of guitars, but I see little reason to spend money for a result that uncertain. Thanks for the info and all the stuff you do. I've learned tons from you and your videos.

You did a GREAT job! That thing looked interesting when I first saw it. Then when you did the contouring and really brought the grain out I started getting interested in finding some zebra wood kits. But after all that work… this thing looks incredible! I wish you thought it felt better than it does, but it looks absolutely incredible. And the sound is amazingly good. Sometimes cheap pickups can surprise you. I've found that the sub-$20 Artec Alnico V mini-humbucker makes a PERFECT neck pickup for a Telecaster. I've built a couple of 'em and gotten favorable feedback. Next Tele project is a Telestrat HSS, with two Tele neck pups I have laying around (from the sets I bought for the above two Teles :) ), and a Duncan Stag Mag for the bridge. Five way switch will allow N, N+M parallel, M, N+M series, and Bridge. A mini toggle will flip the phase on one of the Tele picukps, and another mini toggle will do series/parallel for the bridge. Need to get a HB-mount Tele bridge, 'cause I'm convinced that most of the Tele Twang™ comes from that big slab o metal.

A Nashville Tele has a 3 way switch and a separate on, off switch for the middle pickup. The factory ones had different switching than the Strats too. The only ones I'm aware of with Strat switching are the budget most end of the spectrum. Try switching magnets on your bridge pickup to a neodymium one. It'll make a whole new pup.

All three out of phase sounds lean & mean! I have a Tele also, so I totally get what you were going for with your pickup expansion. I built a Gibson style V with humbuckers last spring - I bought a Seymour Duncan strat-style zebra bridge pickup from a private seller on Amazon that’s hardwired out of phase. It’s a very strange pickup, like a factory defect. The Seymour Duncan logo on the white bobbin is upside-down because the bobbin is inverted (?) It looks bizarre! It has a TON of output, and I did the same thing you did & added a push-pull pot. When I have it out of phase, I can blend in just enough of the TV Jones neck humbucker to give it bottom end and added depth. I was going for that beautifully thick dreamy Weezer sound and I got it in spades :)

Gr8 build Dan! I'm in the same ring I think you are as for Tele's...they definitely have their place, but I'm not a huge fan of the standard Tele's...I do liker the Nashville ones, Hum/Hum pups with the 4 knob system (vol/vol - tone/tone), but the thinner ones, not much.

This has become one MFinn´ cool looking and cool sounding guitar. Love the versatility of the pickup tonal options. Man, I NEED one like this in a 7-string version set up for metal in two tone sunburst deep french polish like a vintage Gibson archtop with gold hardware and a gold Floyd Rose. Pickups would be DiMarzio dual blades Fast Track II - bridge, Pro Track - mid, Chopper - neck - going into a wet/dry/wet Peavey 3120/Classic-50/50 - 2xPeavey MS412 with Sheffield1290s with either cab in stereo so the signals could be routed accordingly. One monster rockin´setup. Bluegrass Metal, anyone?.... :)

What you can do if you want the neck and bridge classic tele, all you have to do is add a toggle system 3- way 1-in/out of phase, or cut out completely Then use a 7 way Gilmour mod on a 5 way switch with a push pull, now you can do whatever you want really that would allow you to add the neck pickup with the bridge and you simply cut the middle pickup out with the 3 way toggle.

Great job with this kit !! Wondering if you can modify a Tele kit with a Les Paul neck with trapezoid inlays ?? Something about the dot inlays seem really boring on a Tele to me.....Sucks the finish feels like plastic !! Have you ever tried a brushing lacquer ?? It's also fast drying and after curing you can wet sand and buff out to desired sheen without ending up with that plastic feel !!!

Beautiful job all around -one of the nicest Teles I've ever seen. Did you miss a trick with the controls? -I couldn't get used to the layout so fwd-aft I have volume, tone, and a 3-way toggle at a 45 degree angle. The normal way is a logical layout for an engineer, but not for a player, imo. Anyway, congratulations on another awesome build and explanations!

The out of phase selections sound a bit like a "cocked wah". The only Tele I have with three pickups is a James Burton, it uses a 5 way switch, with the middle position being the standard tele bridge and neck combination. There is no middle only selection available, which suits me fine.

I missed the part where you described the body as made from plastic. I looked at the listing and it’s listed as solid zebrawood body and neck with a phenolic zebrawood fretboard. I worked with zebrawood and it’s a dense, splintery, smelly wood. This body looks just like I would expect zebrawood to look. I still have a strat with a zebrawood body from 40 years ago. If the guitar feels like plastic, that would be the finish.
