Awesome. So, I'm watching this, and every time you said, "hey Google" I was hearing two devices talking over teach other. I thought to myself, poor guy forgot to turn off his other device in the house before he started recording. By the second time you demo'd, I realized... well, I think you know what I realized. :-/

I don’t see why not - the Google AIY install might be a slightly different process though. I know you can seamlessly install Amazon’s AVS for Alexa with the CEED speaker and microphone, however

Google home isnt really connected with the magic mirror (google assistant cant change what is on the mirror, or am i wrong?)

Correct - there’s definitely a way to connect the two but it will require some coding :) I know someone made a MagicMirror module for displaying Alexa cards but haven’t checked on the Google Home front yet.

What is the board already in the pi-top CEED. And is it required? I want to replicate this project without the pi-top CEED. Also how would we do this without the pi-top PROTO board?

The board already in it is built into the Pi-Top. You can probably do this without the PROTO board, but you’ll need some kind of GPIO ribbon cable splitter. I’m not sure if there might be a software conflict TBH by doing that.

Hey is this always-listening like a regular google speaker? or the rpi can act as a in-between safeguard of sorts?

It will take a bit of coding, but you can disable wakeword support and use a button to trigger instead :) that way it isn’t always listening.

What about some voice recognition client-side on the rpi just for the trigger action?

Surely - so you need some sort of wake word engine that’s always listening (so it knows when to hear the wake word); you could use a local wake word engine instead so data isn’t being sent to Google until you actually want to query Google Home. Look into Jasper (and the local wake word engines it uses) as an example. You can use jasper to trigger a script that activates Google. Then Google isn’t always listening, just your Pi itself. Does that make sense?

Can the google home update automatically? And will it continue to be supported in the future?

Yes, so the Google Assistant API itself is web-based and do the improvements they make are available automatically. I guess if they changed the API structure entirely, you’d need to update the software on the Pi - but this is highly unlikely. Any updates to the AIY library itself would probably be for stability and bug fixes.

How sturdy is this? Does the screen come off super easily when using the magnets, or do you have to use some amount of force. Worried about it just dropping off with a slight nudge

Very sturdy! Neodymium magnets are strong.

Shop around for the cheapest Pi-Top option (Tiger Direct has them cheap often); or, find a screen and build your own enclosure, though it isn’t much cheaper. You can also still find the V2 of the voice kit on Amazon super cheap. You could use the Pi Zero instead of the Pi 3 (lowering the price), but performance won’t be quite as solid. You can omit be magnets and tape or glue the screen directly on as well. Finally, it’s possible to buy two-way mirror film, get a cheap piece of glass cut at Home Depot, and apply it yourself. This takes practice. Either way, anything that lowers the material costs (aside from researching cheaper sources) generally increases labor by an order of magnitude. Hope that’s helpful!

I want to create this mirror as well, but I also have a Google Home Mini in the same room. Will the one closest to me react? If not, is it possible to create the mirror without voice and speaker and have it just display weather, calendar, reminders etc?

Yeah, so whichever one picks up your voice most clearly (usually the closest one) will respond. So you can have as many devices in the same room as you want.

I would skip the mirror and use foam to cover the speaker and mics. Better picture and better sound and it would pick up your voice easier and save 40 bucks.

baltasar barbaglia I don’t think you can run the software without the Google Voice Kit software. I haven’t tried but maybe there’s a workaround.

There definitely is - you can use the Voice Kit V1, shop around for a cheaper Pi-Top, use a Raspberry Pi Zero instead of Raspberry Pi 3, and source your own screen and build your own enclosure :) You can definitely bring the price down with a bit of effort but for this video my goal was to keep the build time as low as possible as well.

Those are only the default modules :) the idea is to create a dashboard as a launchpad for whatever you want to do. Check these out: github.com/MichMich/MagicMirror/wiki/3rd-party-modules There are far more useful modules - data feeds, something telling you what time you need to leave for work based on the current traffic, when your favorite team is playing and their standings, or whatever you want to code. Of course you can do a lot of this from your phone, but that’s not really the point.

Hahaha I'm actually a software engineer, I don't think that at all ;) It just bores some people to dive too deep! But since making this video I've gotten feedback that people do, in fact, want all the software bits covered so I've been doing that going forward.
