Building €1,000 small home in 100 hours from open source design

Designer Ryan Frank wanted a semi-mobile home for a small plot in a “sensitive area”. He thought about yurts and domes, but settled for an open source design he found online. Often called a “boathouse” or “gothic arch” structure, it was originally developed by a boat builder; it’s centerpiece are the wooden support ribs.
Frank built the home for about 1000 euros in roughly 100 hours. He now lives in it full-time with his girlfriend, though they use a separate camper as a kitchen, as well as a separate composting toilet and outdoor shower.

Another fine example of debt free living and avoiding becoming an indentured servant to the system. The inverted ship hull design is one that is quite a bit more original and one that also could easily be made mobile.

"In Winter, it's just the warmest house I ever lived in." I laughed at that. I really did. Because in the US, we think that a comfortable house has to be so expensive, and that "cheap" houses can't keep someone warm during cold nights. And when that was said, it was just a slap in the face to the American housing market's ideologies and superstitions! And yet seven of these structures interconnected would be a larger area than houses that are more than ten times the financial cost to buy! Wow, dude. this... I do want to buy a few acres and build a few houses that I wouldn't live in so that friends and family could have their own private places if they hit hard times. This is just amazing!

great mini house, maybe add a dutch door at the rear to allow full pass through the house into the back yard? I can imagine this would be great to supply homes to the homeless on the cheap, allowing such communities to be started, having community showers, restrooms, play places for children, giving these people a place to stay while trying to get back up on their feet after financial tragedy, ect. at least they'd have somewhere to go.

***** I've thought about this idea a lot. The shared bathroom and shower seems like it could potentially be a place where bad/illegal things might happen. I wonder about some sort of screening process. Most people aren't criminals, but some are. Also, some really good people are addicted to drugs and could possibly bring unwanted attention to the community. Anyway, just things I've thought about, but I really love the homeless community idea.

***** Yes! If they really wanted a fresh start, they could contribute to the building process and the community. Great idea, someone like US should put more thought into actually doing something such as this and make a difference?

I love the shape. A guy in upper USA built a tent house with foam boards for insulation and sandwich with ply wood sheets and covered with canvas. It has lasted him for 15 years. But the use of wool to insulate is a brilliant idea if you live in an area that makes it affordable. He has a nice little arraignment for a camp.

Mikhail Evtushenko Actually, this looks like a Viking design to me. I think they dug a pit and put their boat over it and anchored it down and then lived in it. I've seen a similar curved roof design that the occupant said survived a hurricane. If you think in terms of an actual boat, building it to be sea-worthy, it can also be sky-worthy.

I don't like the idea of being forced to go outside for kitchen or "bathroom", but on the other hand, being forced outside allows you to go outside, otherwise you might hardly ever do so because with a normal house everything is inside. That gave me some ideas for a new design to incorporate more outside as part of the house.

Bet you could use the corrugated plastic sheets for this project, they are weather proof, and weight nothing. I did my bedroom ceiling and walls with it, and the outside of the garden sheds. I only have one arm that is fully mobile and limited use of the other arm, yet was able to handle the product. Homedepot sales for 110. for 10 sheets.

Looks like an Arched Cabin build. Sweet....wonder if that's where the father of the current owner got the idea from. It's pretty cool that they keep the costs of the kits low...seems like one of the only tiny home build that's still affordable these days. Affordable kits are few and far between lately...although free plans work great if you can put the work in. I get frustrated when I look at the state of the tiny home makers these days...a movement that started out of necessity turned into a fad resulting in insane price increases and 100k+ builds everywhere.

if you put a layer of plastic over the wooden frame then cover the house with mud or clay then added the tarp after it dried, would it be more insulated and silent during windy nights? been watching a bunch of videos on mud bricks, seems like adding it on the wooden frame would give super cheap protection?

Need a large overhanging roof with adobe so that would negate the structures appeal. I like the wool insulation. Be sure to use wool insulation that still has the lanolin in the wool to help water proof it in case it gets wet. Wool will still breath and his idea is sound.

Really seems like a nice way to live on the one hand. On the other, I've spent many hours thinking about doing something like this and I'm always back at not wanting to leave the city behind because I like being able to enjoy cultural events without having to drive for two hours or something. Be able to meet like-minded people (hillbillies aren't exactly a good match for me). And also, it's a bit difficult depending on how you can make a living. As an artist, one may get away with this. But if your skillset requires you being physically present at a company in a city... I guess I'm just ranting about my own situation. I think it's great if whatever your source of income is allows you to do it and if you maybe already have a decent circle of friends and if you maybe even find a plot of land where you can get into the downtown of a big city within an hour or so.

If I was making one of those tiny homes I would not have that window in the back, make the home smaller since I would just have a bed, a sink, and few personal items. Then I would cover it with dirty and build in a front room with a big window that can be cover like in an Earthship.

+klausssi123 Care to explain little bit more? What kind of small home and for 2500€.. seriously? You happen to mean summer home by any chance? Actually we can build something like that. Technically its considered as portable building same as any movable office container or such. This is pretty much only way to build sauna close to water line as its 50m? area where you cant build permanent building from shore, but you can move your portable sauna building next to water line. If some one asks about it, its there just for storage and could be moved anytime wanted. Just buy container and use its base to build this thing top of it.. thought i rather would build container home than this thing.. or sure this could be nice second floor/roof.

Cynthia G. It's almost intimidating, but I would love to live that life style. I know where there's a will, there's a way and since he's off grid there aren't any major bills except maybe taxes on the land. I know that some people go dumpster diving as a method of survival. Not just homeless people, but even doctors do it. I've seen it on youtube. Anyway, I think if I found the guts to do what this seemingly happy man has done I would be a free person in so many wonderful ways!

Cynthia G. A good question! :-) From an American perspective : If you have low overhead almost any job would allow you to be comfortable. I was actually discussing this yesterday with my GF, Samantha. In my case, paid land outright, solar electricity, low property tax, and a Travel Trailer/tiny house my overhead is next to nil. Even if I worked at a min-wage job here in Colorado, USA @ $8.26 USD I would be able to bring home $1200USD/Month. Nearly all of which would be Disposable income. That is, money to which I can either save or spend on anything I choose as tax, food, electricity, housing has already been met. For me, I feel overhead is the biggest factor. IF I made minimum wage here in Colorado it would be akin to actually making at least $18-20 per hour when you consider having disposable income above the overhead. That is factoring that your overhead is pretty low for living in a city at say $1500USD/Month between rent/utilities/food/gas/vehicle/insurance etc. These numbers being the lower end. :-) Just another perspective of things. - Cloud
