We're following Tony, who heads up a landscaping company 'The Ginger Landscaper' as he completely renovates the garden of this home in Manly West.
This project includes retaining walls, pathways, fencing, earthworks and more. But we're focusing on the 2 ground level decks either side of a pool created using TuffBlock deck blocks.
One deck uses 45mm posts at various heights to account for the slope, whereas the second deck uses joists that slot straight into the TuffBlocks using the 45mm joist slot on a pre-levelled and compacted surface.
Follow along as Tony shows you his methods including his use of a string line, creating checked in posts, chalk lines and his 5 board spacing technique for evenly spaced boards.

Hey mate great video, just curious what is the app that you use to get your spacings?
@Buildtuff

I think the app was called 'Quick Chippy'. I'll have to ask Tony to find out.

Great job Tony 👍🏿, just out of curiosity can you use tough block aswell when working with eco deck for an alfresco area?
@Buildtuff

Hey there, hopefully we can answer this for you (Tony has a separate KZfaq channel himself so likely won't see this). TuffBlocks work with 1.5 and 2 inch joists, as well as 3.5 and 4 inch posts. The exact joist measurements are 1.37 inches up to 1.77 inches for joists and for posts there are 2 slots for 3.5 and 4 inch posts (3.54 inches and 3.93 inches to be exact). So if your framing materials fit into these measurements then your sorted. We've seen people build using steel frames with TuffBlock so as long as it fits then you're good to go! Visit your local Lowe's or Bunnings to check them out for yourself.

Do you anchor the Tuffblocks to keep them from moving? What if I was building over a concrete patio and it's a freestanding deck? Relying on weight of deck alone isn't good enough I would think.
@Buildtuff
@Buildtuff 3 ай бұрын
If building over concrete you can dynabolt them down. If building over soil you can use earth anchors that auger into the ground and are commonly used with commercial scale tents and trampolines. Most decks weigh about the same as a small car, so the weight itself is more than enough to hold it down. If you encounter high winds then these 2 options work well to reduce any risk of uplift.

Will the two 2x4's fit tight in the Tuffblock when building up your checked post? They would end up 3-1/2" x 3". Thanks!
@Buildtuff
@Buildtuff Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, you're right. Using this method leaves it snug on one side, with a bit of room on the other. But a typical deck weighs about the same as a small car (this can vary massively but you get the point). The downward force keeps everything in place firmly, so being 100% snug on both sides isn't an issue at all. If you have any further queries about this please reach out to us via email and we'd be happy to go into more detail: info@buildtuff.com

Never heard the term "bearer" before. Maybe this is a British English term. In the USA I believe we use the term "beam" for what's described here as a "bearer". Or is a bearer truly something else?

If you’re building over soil, then you can use earth/hurricane anchors which are cheap and easy to install (done on this deck but not shown on camera): www.amazon.com/Jayzod-Shelters-Canopies-Trampoline%EF%BC%8C4-Included/dp/B08H4DZCV4 They auger into the ground and attach to the subframe for areas that are prone to strong winds or hurricanes. Or if you’re building over concrete then you can dynabolt the TuffBlocks down. Floating decks aren’t typically tied down and the immense weight (similar in most cases to a small car) holds the deck in place. But these are two options you can use if needed.

Yeah that cantilever isn’t a great idea just held in with screws
@Buildtuff
@Buildtuff 2 жыл бұрын
Most councils allow a 1ft/30cm overhang and it's bridged along the entire span which provides a lot of strength. Tony's used a large number of longer batten screws in each bridged joist so it should be more than adequate.
@mrengineering101
@mrengineering101 2 жыл бұрын
@@Buildtuff there is nothing wrong with a cantilever and as1648 describes how to do it. Screwing a joist onto the side of another joist is a poor way of building. You are effectively relying on the decking to be the structure. The cantilever will have little moment resistance
@peterwalker7510
@peterwalker7510 2 жыл бұрын
The fact that the deck boards them selfs are screwed to the cantilever and the other side of the deck will give it considerable strength
@mrengineering101
@mrengineering101 2 жыл бұрын
@@peterwalker7510 a cantilever should be back spanned to give it sufficient strength and durability. Again as1648 describes this and has diagrams how to do it. Decking is not a structural member
