Hi Stefani, I used to build a few decks being from the northern states I had to use tubes filled with cement to go below the frost line. Anyways I love the floater deck. Amazing clean look.

One recommendation, you definitely should’ve gone with 12” spacing on your joists instead of 16” when using composite decking. Manufacturer should’ve specified that anyway. There will be some quite noticeable give in between joists when using 16”s

Definitely 12".....I had a Trex deck installed and it was done with 16" joist spacing and the Trex compost gives when you walk on it. Not strong enough with 16" spacing. Living with regrets.

I built all my floating decks by putting a 4x4 into the ground 2 feet into concrete and used 1 bag of concrete to hold each post (4x4). I went with 2 4x4s every 8 feet so that i could utilize a full length 2 x4 and i made walkways around my house like that then poured concrete around some of my wood pathways that were a little bit lower than the deck but only like an inch. In some apots the concrete is surrounding my wooden fooating sidewalk and decking. Then i have 4 platforms with sheds on the platforms and they are raised about a foot each. Then i have some stairs made of those red square pavers and landscaping timbers. Plus i used concrete in some of the sides and borders and such. I also poured concrete on a lot of my yard and while wet i poured a bage of pebbles on top ofbthe concrete which i layed very very wet and the slurry made the pebbles stick on top and it looks good and is rough and non slip for aure. My dog craps on it and i just wash it right off. No worries. 😊

Hello! Super helpful video. I had a question that I wanted to see if you had a moment to answer. Was a paver patio with a step down an option for you all or were you fully decided on the floating deck? If you were between the two options, what made you choose the deck? My husband and I are currently trying to decide which is going to be the better option taking into consideration access, view, resale value, etc. I would appreciate any comment back to hear another viewpoint. Thanks!

A patio has an average ROI of 55% vs 75% for a PT deck with composite coming in slightly lower than wood with more expensive composites even less. It’s important consideration for budget minded people. 👍🏽

Well done! I'm a little concerned with only one row of deck blocks in the center.. Are they more than 8' apart? with 2X6 framing is there a rule for the maximum span be for they need additional support? I was thinking 6' apart to support my deck joists.

Thanks for your excellent video, One question: at 15:41, why need to make the crowns are facing up when installing joist?
@maxmccann3617
@maxmccann3617 Жыл бұрын
Because over time the load will flatten them out. If you face the crowns down, over time the load will make them sag.

After adding and adjusting the level using paver base, since it's basic sand, which does not allow loosening of the level after rain or over time, was it not necessary to use cement?

I’m having trouble understanding why you would only support one end of the joists with deck blocks and then only use hangers for the center?
@jamesmangan7754
@jamesmangan7754 11 ай бұрын
Out of interest could you have built the deck without removing the concrete base? So have the joists sit directly on the concrete. I was thinking sealant and then a bit of bitumen paint to stop the joists rotting, off cuts to get the slight slope.

Nothing wrong with overkill. She spent a pretty penny for that for that composite decking. Deck blocks are 10 or 15$. Or the price of 3linear feet roughly. Its cheap.

The plastic will hold water and your wood will rot sitting in the water. Better to put gravel down that will drain and lift the deck up off the ground at least one inch using pressure treated lumber also.

Nice job but I’m still trying to figure out why you used blocking at every joist?? That is definitely overkill and a budget killer as well! I’m all for the deck being secure but that was simply not necessary!

You dont need a fall on your deck to allow water to flow away from your house , water will escape through the gaps between deck boards its not going to jump the gaps to flow off the end of the deck 😂 Good video tho 😊

i hate to be the bearer of bad news Stefani, but YOU CANNOT install TREX plastic decking on 16" on center joists!! when you use plastic or composite deck boards, the sub-frame MUST only be 12" "on center." anything wider than 12" spacing with plastic deck boards will cause the deck boards to warp or sag. i strongly suggest you talk to some contractors in your area who install Trex plastic or composite decking. they will confirm what i'm saying.
