For the closing ceremony of the 2021 Catskill Mountain Makers Camp, Michael Alm, Johnny Tromboukis, and I conducted the very first Maker Burn, building a 25-foot-tall, scrap-wood dinosaur over the course of a week, then lighting it on fire.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't watched this until now. I love everything about this, the concept, the scale, the guerilla build. This is my kind of art! And I love this documentary style for this video. Congrats and a successful build and burn! I'm already excited to see what happens next year. Thanks for sharing!

Not gonna lie, I teared up a little at seeing it breathe smoke and fire for the first time and hearing the crowd reactions. That's good community spirit right there!

I'm having a flashback to the movie " This is Spinal Tap". (Spoiler Alert!) There is a scene in the movie where the group wants a replica of Stonehenge created and the builder misreads the measurement on the drawing (it was on a paper napkin), building it 17 inches tall rather than 17 feet tall. I'm glad you did not make the same mistake!

Ackchyually, dinosaurs did not breathe fire. That is a proto-dragon, the evolutionary ancestor of the more familiar Medieval dragon :)

This video really paints me. I am disabled and my income doesn't afford me the luxury to buy even the crappiest lumber, I only get to play with reclaimed (aka scrap) lumber or offcuts from a locally joinery shop. Watching this precious commodity really breaks my heart, whatever you say about the lumber you used. I can't pretend to "like" this video.

A good deal of the wood we used was literally mildewed and smelled awful. It wasn't much good for anything but burning.

@@WesleyTreat the look of it reminds me of a house near me that was begun in 2008, then abandoned after the first floor was framed. It just got progressively more gross until it all collapsed into the foundation.
@WesleyTreat
@WesleyTreat 2 жыл бұрын
I mean, I get where you're coming from, Ian, and I truly wish you had access to better wood. But industry throws literally tons of wood, better than what we used, in the landfill every day, because there aren't enough people willing or able to make use of it. I'm not sure why you'd be disappointed with a couple of guys who burned 8 sheets of moldy plywood, and brought joy to a lot of people doing it.

@@WesleyTreat I'm not sure what happened to the balance of the model. However, on Monday as I walked around visiting with the few stragglers cleaning up, I found an arm from the model in the grass. It's here in my shop now and to most it's just an odd shaped little piece of cardboard but to me it's a fond memento of a weekend with friends.
