What about, instead of steering by turning the wheels, we bend the whole vehicle?
I previously made a snake robot which has multiple segments that could bend sideways and up and down. Each segment had powered wheels, and that meant it could bend in all directions to get traction no matter what the terrain was.
I really enjoyed doing that project, so now I’m going to make a much bigger one that I can ride on!

I like this "Yeah that's cool and all, but what if I made it BIG?" series you're starting. I can't believe the breakneck pace you're putting these projects out at. If I could recommend a tool, a CNC plasma cutter. A lot of these bigger projects could probably be designed like flat pack furniture or one of those 3d slot together puzzles. Plasma cutting is very fast compared to CNC routing/milling, and takes a lot of the manual labor out of making complex shapes and structures. If you design the parts with this in mind, you can make things that fit and slot together very quickly and easily for any final assembly and welding. Just some advice as someone who works with metal every day, and uses a cnc plasma at work, if you do get one (a sponsor might donate one?) or build one (could make a good video or more likely series for the channel, I could also give you the plans for the budget one I built at work) I'd highly recommend good ventilation and fume extraction, or you'll have a bad time. p.s. I don't know about you, but I find those hole saws to be an absolute nightmare, step drills are much more pleasant to use in my experience and last a long time (if you run them at slow speeds, which most people forget).

+1 for the CNC, plasma or otherwise. Or he could use something like Send Cut Send, like Superfast Matt does, and order "3D puzzles" you can weld together.

I think there will be some issues when running over uneven terrain, since the segments are not free to twist along the length of the vehicle, and the wheels don't have independent suspensions. Imagine riding in a straight line and running one wheel over a small bump. The whole thing will tilt, lifting all the wheels on one side off the ground, and if the weight is evenly distributed over the segments the joints will be under a lot of stress, not to mention that at least 25% of the traction will be lost.

Hey James, here's a little tip for when you need to thread steel box beams, without having to weld on a nut: Friction drilling. You basically melt the thin wall while drilling, extruding it inward and forming a solid base to thread into. Super quick, easy and reliable.

I appreciate you talking about the difference between "taking longer" and "doing more work". Like, for example, saying "I can hand wash dishes faster than a dishwasher" is a disingenuous statement because a dishwasher does the work for you while you're free to do something else. Furthermore, projects like this that you make with more "traditional" fabrication techniques could be a good case-study in a hybrid approach where you use 3d printing and CNC milling to make jigs to speed up your manual processes. That would help with repeatable operations like drilling the same hole dozens (or hundreds) of times. Either way, I'm excited to see your fabrication evolve as you incorporate new techniques. Looking forward to more videos!

Your drill press has slots that allow you to bolt down a fence. A fence is useful for reproducing a number of holes that need to be located at a consistent location. A clamp can also be added to the fence as a stop to get the holes located at a consistent distance from the left or right end of the work.

For the part where you welded the nut on to the tube to add extra threads (around 2:20). Look up nut-serts. These would save you quite a bit of time since you only have to drill a hole, you don't have to tap and you don't have to weld. They are also pretty affordable.

I realize by now you're likely well down the road to building something already, but just in case you're still planning you should consider building it like a chariot. Make a standing platform on the last car with a control pedestal/handhold. It will be mentally and mechanically easy to operate as the whole thing will be in front of you and you won't have trouble staying on. Your weight will serve to anchor the last car in place, so that as it bends back and forth it displaces mostly at the front, also making it mentally easier to steer and eliminating the possibility of accidentally swinging your tail into things. Also, it'll look awesome!
