I have vowed to never sand a complete car in the garage again. It just makes a huge mess that is almost impossible to completely clean up. You find sanding dust for months. The '86 Foxbody hatchback (known as the Gray Lady) needs to be sanded, and it's always cold or snowing outside this time of year. I decided to build a simple and cheap sanding booth that could double as a paint booth with some filters and fans added in the future. Problem solved!
My name is Canaan Manley and I am the proprietor of Basin Motorsports. Basin Motorsports is a small garage in South Central Oregon aimed at rebuilding vehicles, making one-off custom parts, and documenting the process step by step for viewer enjoyment and intrigue. I'm an Engineer and Consultant by day, and have been a motorsport enthusiast for the last 30 years.

It's possible. I live in the middle of nowhere, and we have plenty of animals around. Bigfoot may come help me sand on the '86 some day.

Great idea for painting but I wouldn't do both sanding and painting you would have dirt all in your paint

Absolutely. Others have put in vents with fans and filters for painting. It's a very flexible design.

I bought a greenhouse.y next step is the flooring, what would you recommend? The green house has an open bottom, also can you reuse media?

If you need something on the floor, plastic works well and most things won't stick to it. You should be able to reuse most things. I just fold my plastic sides and roof up, take the PVC apart, and store it. It all can be assembled later and you can change configuration. If you watch the gray car build later on, I have the booth down to a 6' x 6' just for bumpers and hood bodywork.

I’m going to try this but want to keep it outside. You think the plastic would last outside? Maybe use a tarp or something?

Try finding a UV protected plastic if it will see direct sun, and possibly go with a thicker walled PVC if it will have to deal with wind. It may need to be glued together for extra strength. I've had others send me pictures of theirs, and it's more commonly done than I thought.

I'm trying to build something like this to sand down football helmets before painting I was just wondering how do you clean it or if it was outside wood and external fan on one side and an internal fan on the other side keep it clean on the inside?

When I was done with it, I just swept the garage floor, took it outside and shook it out. Most of the dust just floats away. You could use a push / pull with a box filter (A/C house filter) and keep a little flow moving if needed.
