WAIT! Don't start a community radio station without this guide: jamesm.com/radio
I recently visited Foundation.fm for a radio studio tour and to see how they started a community radio station from inside an independent cinema.

Well done! And to think that you owe all of this, especially your licensing, to the "Radio Pirates" of the 1960's. Radio Caroline, The Big L, and so many others are the grandfathers of all private & community radio in Great Britain. In Canada we always had both private & public (CBC) radio. Cheers from Canada.

When they say "radio station" i tend to think about the same thing I have built many of over the years. My current one I built by myself has 2 studios, engineering room with optimod processors, exciters and test equipment as well as the electrical panels and controls. The 3rd room has the FM transmitters, the main 3.5 kW and the backup a 2 kW, and then the big tower with the large bays in the backyard. I guess these are just internet streaming services.

I think you're living in the past! 😂 The concept of racks, transmitters and rooms to store it all in is cumbersome, outdated and surplus to requirements in 2023. Thats the point, you don't need all of this stuff to start a radio station. How do people listen to the radio now? Smart speakers, phones, connected devices (incl cars). Your 3.5kW transmitter is going to be useless trying to reach those. When you say they are "Just internet streaming services" What you mean, like "just" Netflix aka the biggest broadcaster in the world? Oh wait... They don't have any transmitters either 🤔

@@JamesMulvanyTV Definition of radio: The transmission and reception of electromagnetic waves of radio frequency, especially those carrying sound messages:. If your going to advertise how to build a radio station, you might want to study the actual meaning of radio. Anyone can plug a mixer into a computer and stream. Broadcast streaming or podcasting would be the correct definition. As far as our 3.5 kW transmitter being useless, tell that to the millions of broadcasting companies across the country that run class A, B & C terrestrial over the air broadcasts and the few mom and pop operations like ours that still serve our community delivering news sports weather info to our dedicated listeners.

@@snugglebunnyhaven7258 Agreed. Over here in NZ when we were hit by a nasty cyclone, it took out phone, internet and cell service. What people turned to for emergency info was their trusty AM and FM RADIO stations.

@@alexbrunt897 That's the thing about actual radio. Even over TV it's more reliable. As an engineer, I can build a small temporary broadcast station with very little effort. Analog AM FM is very reliable means to communicate. When TV went HD, although picture is clearer, it's not reliable. Thunderstorms knock it out. The analog was more powerful. And yes during disasters terrestrial radio is always better. Internet outages among other things. Even ham radio is relied on heavily.

Also (increasingly) on commercials. Not my thing either, being an outsider to that local community. Uncertain what the precise "T-dropping" rule is (occasional "stray" T's pop up!). But I feel sophisticated when dropping appropriate letters in French.

In a community radio station the breakdown of importance for equipment is thus: Mixing Desk and microphones = 50% - Phono Turntables X 2(8% each) = 16% CD Players X2(8% each) = 16% - MiniDisc Recorder/Players X2(8% each) = 16%. The total value of turntables, CD players and MiniDisc units checks in at 48%, added to the value of the mixing desk and microphones, a total of 98%. So where is the remaining 2%? In the computer! The computer is the *LEAST* important part of a broadcast studio. This from me, a former community FM radio presenter. In community radio it is *VITALLY IMPORTANT* that a presenter knows how to operate the turntables, CD players and MiniDisc Recorder/Players *BEFORE* he/she even enters a studio to present his/her first on-air session. If all you can do is line up a song on a computer playback programme, no matter how good you are at announcing, then you deserve to be sent flying out the door of the station with the manager's boot up your useless arse.

@Neil Forbes i worked at a community radio station between 2007 and 2012 the basic set up was one CD player (Denon),one turntable, mini disc (for community announcements) and one computer and what you hear in the studio through speakers is not coming through the mixer its actually the live broadcast itself just in case of a technical hitch sometimes the station uses KZfaq if you're trying to get hold of a song that is not available i have visited radio stations on the east coast on NSW some of them are good and some i wouldn't visit again on station near Newcastle is a good example

@@top40researcher31 The speakers in the studio are *always* hooked up to a tuner/amp in the control room to monitor the signal coming back from the transmitter in order to check if the transmitter fails. But the speakers can be switched to monitor the output from the mixing desk if needed. Generally radio stations are equipped with two CD players, two turntables, two(or three) minidisc recorder/players, but we'll assume two for the moment, three microphones(presenter and up to two studio guests[interviewees, perhaps]) and a computer, and a cassette deck for the presenter to record him/herself for "air-check" purposes. The scale of *importance* in each piece of gear is thus: 50% = Mixing Desk + microphones. 16% = CD players(X2 - 8% each). 16% - Turntables(X2 - 8% each). 16% = Minidisc Recorder/Players(X2 - 8% each) for a total of 48% for CD/MD & Turntables. 2% = Computer. Cassette deck not counted. That adds up to 100%. The computer is the *LEAST IMPORTANT* component in a studio as it can create problems and should not be heavily relied upon. Trouble is, too many presenters today are *NOT* properly trained in how to use the turntables, CD players or MD decks, and get stuck if the computer plays up.
