As someone who was working for a proper local station (Chiltern) when it got swallowed up by GWR in the 90’s it was an absolute scandal how they managed to acquire and pretty much run into the ground loads of local stations and turn them into the same stuff, different towns. Their mission (which wasn’t a secret) was to build a group of stations so that if you drove from the south coast to Yorkshire (just about) you could always pick up one of their stations, and it was probably playing the same song! I now work for a hospital radio station and a community radio and they’re proper local stations.

Chiltern had a great reputation back in the day. I think there were a number of acquisitions in the 90s from the likes of GWR and UKRD - but they still kept the local personalities, and the local studios. The issue is now, these smaller groups have now been bought by very large - corporate groups that have further removed any local output.

How had I never heard of community radio when I used to be very familiar with community television? Thank you thank you I plan to retire and do this or procrastinate one or the other. Plan to check out your resource thanks for providing it!

KXCI in Tucson, AZ. Has over 70 volunteer DJs. Monday nights is "Locals only" with only Tucson artists.

I hate what Global and Bauer have done between them - and Global's founder is supposed to be a radio lover! I'd hate to see what he'd do to it if he wasn't a fan.
